I'm 100% with Sam on this. I also enjoyed Acolyte even though it wasn't my favorite. TBH, I have loved far more Disney Star Wars projects than I've hated. To me, the only thing that was unsalvagable was TLJ. RoS was 50/50, and I appreciated JJ for at least TRYING to fix the mess that RJ left us with. His fix may not have been the best, and it was clear through his writing that he didn't really understand a lot about Star Wars, but the man loves Star Wars and he tried. I'm not Yoda, so I can appreciate a good try. I've enjoyed pretty much everything else. Solo and R1 were awesome. I loved Andor, got a lot of enjoyment out of OB1, Season7 of CW was amazing, and I loved Ahsoka and Mando (even season 3!) I feel like most of the problem is we've all been hurt by one or two projects, and hurt even more deeply by RJ and the producers' treatment of us outside of the projects. A lot of us have been marginalized just for having opinions, and worse, insulted and purposefully alienated. And all this makes people biased against any further projects, so those projects are judged much more harshly. But if we just ignore the big dummies at the top and simply allow ourselves to enjoy things, we might find that things are not as bad as we wanted to think. Most of the content is good IMO, just the people at the top are being jerks.

I was online and "lived through" the hate and discontent of the Prequel Trilogy. The pitch, tenor, and ferocity of the drama was quite similar. okay. that being said, whatever mistakes Ole Man Lucas might have made with the PT are less, IMO, than the problems that afflicted the ST. Luucas's PT had one solid and consistent team of creators and a very clear vision. The ST did not. Lucas was working for love, in a weird environment that featured big studio money but indie studio creative freedom. Abrams, et. al. might love Star Wars, but they had none of that. The creators of the ST repeatedly did this annoying thing that usually made them look like idiots: They'd try and make the 1st Order more impressive and crazy than the Empire. The Death Star? We'll top that with a WHOLE PLANET turned into a weapons that vampire leeches off the stars themselves to work! Yeahhh, that's the ticket! The Star Killer weapon isn't just a planet killer, it has hyperspatial range, the energy bolt will split into multiple "prongs" and can destroy several celestial bodies at once! Yeahhh, that'll impress the fandom! SSDs? You thought they were big an impressive? Suck on Supremacy, baby! Yeah, yeah! And a bunch of other stuff like it. Like the magical super fleet of Star Destroyers with their ridiculously huge underslung genitals just magically coming up from underground, fully armed, provisioned, and, presumably, crewed, actually, this complaint can also be filed under my next big problem with the ST, but for this part of this post, we can just note that those big uhhh, "Death Star style 'weapons' " hanging down there is another egregious example: "Yeah, yeah, let's make every Star Destroyer as badass as the Death Stars were! Yeah!" I'm JFC, how much more impressive than the Death Stars do you really need to be? They went into stupid-land and rubbed mud and dog-turds on their faces. Lucas was guilty of this a couple of times, but the ST creators did over and over and over again: They did stupid patronizing stuff that might be okay with 12 year olds but made older fans feel like they were sloppy and had a low opinion of our intelligence and discernment. Little nickel and dime stuff that would stack up, hokey stuff: Bombers in Ep8? Bombers in zero G where bombs can't fall? C'monnnn, don't treat me like I'm a moron. While you're at it, when Supremacy was chasing the Resistance ships, her batters shot blaster shots that arc'd, again, like there's gravity in space. Y'all know that Finn and Rose would have never ever made it into that casino. Dress code. Security would have never let them in. In Ep8, Maz Kanata took a phone call when she was in the middle of a firefight. What? GTFOhere. As noted, also, the Exagol fleet coming up out of the ground....incredibly dumb. Really, everything about Exagol and the return of the Palpster was super dumb. As far as I'm concerned, everything about episode 9 pretty much sucked except for the good chemistry between Ridley and Driver and that I liked both of those characters. I didn't mind when the ST filled itself up to the brim with "rhymes" or inverse rhymes, like mirror images of either the OT or the PT. Lucas did that a lot with the PT rhyming or inverting the OT. Fine. That's fine. It's traditional SW to do that. There was a lot of stuff in the Sequel Trilogy that, had it been worked over differently, would have been cool. Cool ideas. Cool characters. All of it ruined by a vision that was shoddy, lazy, patronizing, and superficial. I have a sense that the kids were mostly fine with the ST. But damn, y'all, kids don't stay kids for very long. All of your OT and PT fans are still hanging around, even if they're just casual fans. All your super fans are definitely in their 20s or older. Not all of us are geniuses or have the trained eye of a media critic, but we don't NEED to when you serve us up low effort mediocrity like the ST. We're not going to be sold on stuff like the ST and accept it uncritically. F that.

Sam is being very diplomatic. As I’ve said before there was nothing wrong with so many aspects of the Acolyte, the production, the cgi work, the set work, so many of the actors involved, they all did a great job with what they were given but to me the problems lay with the writing and the direction. How the director and the producers can let the budget spiral out of all semblance of control whilst not noticing the the writing, the core on which the whole production is based, was way below par, is a monumental failure that Headland seemingly refuses to take accountability for. There’s an old business saying, ‘the basic principle of management is that everything is your fault’. She was the linchpin for the production, most of the decisions that govern the flow of the narrative are purely down to the director. Most of the business decisions that govern how money is spent on a project is down to the director. Ensuring that the writing is strong enough to support such a monumental production is very much within the remit of the director. Which is why I get very angry indeed when fans are blamed for not liking the acolyte and Headland effectively gets off scot free for ‘f***ing it up royal’ (in the words of the Emperor from robot chicken). It’s not the fans fault that the story and the writing are weak, it’s not the fans fault that this multi million dollar project couldn’t deliver, it’s the director’s. And to allow her to suggest that the fans reaction to the project was down to a sexist or homophobic sentiment is just plain toxic. She is projecting an attitude onto the fans that I argue, is no where near at the level that she claims it is , purely to sidestep the accountability of not being able to do the job she was hired to do. I have every confidence that the Acolyte would’ve been much better received in the hands of better writers and a more competent director. But according to headland, ‘it’s because the lead is female and I’m a lesbian’ Oh get over yourself.

Turns out the Lightsaber size was due to the logistics. They wanted sabers that could be moved around well for choreography and visual effects, this meant they had actual light up sabers in hand, which meant they had the power source for them inside the handle. For that, it required a thicker handle. It had little to nothing to do with lore.
@bluemoondm862928 күн бұрын
@@ronanscreed Funny thing is the original lightsabers also had a battery in them to power the spinning motor for the metal rod. That's where the classic flickering comes from. First of all, the Acolyte was a real mess, with one or two good ideas that were poorly executed. I’m a surprised LucasFilm actually thought6 that was what we wanted from the franchise. Someone should’ve said something, and while people point to Filoni, he was put in a corner, where he had to allow others to write their versions and let them burn for it. There’s nothing wrong with the idea of other witches, but the version they gave us was ridiculous. It all comes down to the execution. How can you spend similar money on Andor and Acolyte and get such contrasting results? The answer is down to those running the shows and writing the scripts, and nothing to do with the actors. The issue that George had making the prequels was that he had much more technology and a lot more practice at creating this world that it looked strange for the past to be much more refined in many ways. Had her the technology he had from the prequels for the originals then they would’ve been very different films. The same with the choreography for the fight scenes, where he had to build a whole new culture and hierarchy around lightsaber duelling. He created this system where it came down to different styles being better suited against certain opponents. Let’s be honest that first lightsaber duel in the originals looks odd compared to the prequels. They simply hadn’t thought5 deeply about it, and so they had to evolve that side of things. When you think of the sheer amount of Jedi around and a couple of Sith in the prequels at all times, then there has to be more emphasis on that practice. We sometimes forget, and maybe we need to stop and remember that the story of Star Wars was influenced by how they evolved the way they made the movies. There are tow stories with the franchise, one is the story we see on secret, and the other is the one of those people creating and making it all happen. Having said that, the sequels were not planned properly, and had so many voiced in what happened that it became a contradiction in terms. Even The Rise of Skywalker was to be different from the one JJ Abram’s wanted and the open we got because Disney thought they knew better.

5:10 - I completely agree with him. First of all, even if YOU don't like a particular project, why try to "take that away" from those who do? Second, I personally LOVED The Acolyte. However, I can see why some wouldn't, and I don't berate them for that. I just happened to have a "special connection" that many other fans didn't have. You might say, a "unique perspective". That doesn't mean I'm "better" than those who didn't... but my life experiences differ very much from most people. I can also acknowledge the flaws in the series, without allowing those flaws to diminish my enjoyment of the series. Star Wars is LOADED with flaws, if you really want to expend the energy and find them all. But if that's the case, why bother? Just say, "That's not for ME", and don't watch. Are you REALLY that devoid of things to do, that you have to shit on what other people enjoy? That's why I like you, Meg.... you can freely speak your mind about whether you enjoy something or not, calmly discuss WHY, but without judging those who DO enjoy what you do not. It's that brazen judgment of others that caused me to unsubscribe from Star Wars Theory. He just started being so negative with his opinions, and drifted into judgmental territory. The longer it went on, the worse he got about it. I don't want or need that kind of negativity in my life. I don't mind honest criticism,

I just finished watching Acolytes for a second time and to be honest I am not a fan of it however in my opinion Disney should give it a second chance. I really wanted to see what is going to happen with QIMIR and OSHA. What was the meaning for Yoda to appear at the end and what is going to be his response
@killablackmambakbm759320 күн бұрын
Only logical thing that is supposed to happen is for Plagueis to eliminate Mae, Osha and Qimir. There shouldn't be anymore sith or sith like characters in that timeliness. The writers forgot how star wars is written. Qimir would be 1 of the sith that tired to betray him by taking on another. I'd be fine with that if Plagueis took everyone out during the series finale

Acolyte was a new idea, which is what Star wars is about, expanding the imagination and universe. Loved it for what it was. True fans enjoy the Art & do not conjuncture their imagination to limits placed by others.

The reason The Acolyte frustrated me so much was because it had things I really, really liked but it was all sandwiched between a bunch of garbage I couldn’t get past.

The fact is if Disney didn't fuck up with that show so bad, they wouldn't be in the position to have to take it away from anyone. They are taking it away because it didn't make money. Things that suck typically don't make money. This is a very simple thing that many can't seem to wrap their brains around...

Excellent video Meg! Thank you! Ten or a thousand years down the line here, The Acolyte will be one live-action show among many dozens. I doubt it will ever be regarded as the best Star Wars, but will most likely be remembered for some of the more thought-provoking ideas presented in Star Wars. Have a blessed day.
@stop736Ай бұрын
That’s how I feel also. I’m not a fan of the Acolyte, but 10-20 years from now I think most people will just see it as one small story that went on just before Phantom Menace. It can be appreciated just for that alone. A show that took place during a time that’s not really explored on the screen in live action at least. It won’t be seen as a great show maybe. But it is unique perspective of what was happening in the time period the show was covering. Just my opinion though…🤷🏻♂️

Just stumbled across this video and your channel.. The way your looking at the whole debate is really how it should be: calm, reasonable and sharing arguments to undermine your pov. The way social media is nowadays is just awful.. we need to learn again that people with different opinions have those with good reason or because their pov. Talking and sharing each others opinions will lead to new insights and maybe to other conclusions as well. There's no reason to hate on others just because they have a different opinion..

I doubt that The Acolyte will be remembered much more fondly, as the present-day toxic politics of division will, I hope, soon be consigned to little more than a footnote in history - taking much of the associated media with them. However, the further we move away from the main issues, which were caused by cast and crew members, the better the chances that the show may, in some way, manage to distance itself from those issues - so, who knows. The last three films, however, are much tougher to salvage as they are technically so flawed as to not really work as a trilogy. Their only hope (haha) is if someone like Filoni can create enough supporting material to create any form of narrative to explain them. Regardless, as you say, if people enjoy them, let them enjoy them. There are enough grifters feeding on the divisions in society and fandoms these days without any of us needing to join them.

Sam Witwer is filled with so many good ideas and creativity, and he’s so good at logically looking at the lore and playing by the worldbuilding rules already set in place by Star Wars: does anyone know if he’s just, I dunno, written a whole novel or something? Either Star Wars related or something completely original? Because those are the kind of skills it takes to do that

I came up during the original trilogy. I saw the first movie when it came out. Return of the Jedi is still the best of the 3 movies to me. But the original trilogy is monumentally inferior to the prequel trilogy. The Phantom Menace is on a completely different level, and it remains as one of the best written movies ever. Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were just as thoughtful. And The Clones Wars took the prequel trilogy to an event higher level than before. There will never be any science fiction fantasy in the foreseeable future that can be as epic as the Star Wars prequel trilogy and The Clone Wars.

I personnaly believe that the Acolyte would indeed have a big ressurgence in perceived value with time, especially if it gets granted some other seasons. It brings so many things to the table; exploring the Dark Side perspective, diving into the flaws of the Jedi as an organization, the idea of a cover-up conspiracy and the mystery of Force immaculate conception, displaying Force-Fu, Cortosis, and the bleeding of Kyber, but ABOVE ALL finally getting the story of Darth Plagueis!! As fans, I'm sure we could have forgiven the teen drama vibes and the lukewarm visual effects and value all of those things it brought to live action. I hope it will eventually get a follow-up.
@killablackmambakbm759320 күн бұрын
The issue is the writers forget the sith are clearly displayed as selfish , power hungry and evil. Anything that tries to change that premise deviates from starwars. Sinestro core members are evil. That is written into cannon. A green lantern sinestro core always works but the moment that yellow ring comes on he is evil. Star wars is black and white in that regard. There is corruption in periods of time with the jedi and plight of some sith is understandable but once you go down that path it ends in pain, suffering and death.
@simongervais930220 күн бұрын
@@killablackmambakbm7593 I think it could be argued that the Jedi vs Sith is a metaphor for the Christian Church vs Satanism (hear me out here) the christian church puts foreward all of these Good-seeming values, but has corruption running through it. Modern satanism is critical of the subserviance and fakeness of the church and preaches self-determination and the embrace of animalistic impulses. I think there could be a case for exploring the value in Sith doctrine. Must I also remind ourselves that Darth Tyranus (Dooku) was a very calm and collected sith while Mace Windu was a jedi who harnessed anger and agression to increase his power. Even Luke harnessed his anger when fighting Vader. It's not as black and white as we might see at a glance. There is space for nuance and there always was. It's actually a point that is made throughout the lore, that this dichotomy of Light vs Dark, this segregation put in place by the Jedi, is part of what enabled the Empire to rise. I think ultimately the franchise should lead us to see the value in both what is considered the light side and the dark, by removing these distinctions and accepting the Force in all its nuances.

I’m never go into a video about the acolyte we all know what it is and what’s not , fortunately we killed it and is not coming back , but I was curious about Sam’s options about it , fine he is playing safe, fine give him a cookie , well what really matters is that is gone and we must continue this stand against that type of content till Lucasfilms got the message they did it for the Acolyte

He notes something important - Venestra and Sol were absolutely not the right Jedi to be dealing with the situation, but the corruption and lack of awareness that plagued the Jedi meant that Venestra’s first move was to try to silence the problem.

I’m the OT generation and first saw IV & V as a double billing. Mind blowing for an 8 year old. But I have I have also gone very deep on the prequels because of the lore and lavish effects. The sequels are just lacking, on everything, especially good story and imagination. I felt more pissed off as I left the cinema with each one. I’m not going to pretend they were good. They were not. Same goes for the Acolyte. Learning of the immense budget just makes them even worse. I feel a crime must have been committed they were so so so bad.

To me, The Last Jedi and The Acolyte both brought depth to Star Wars as a whole that was only hinted at in the original trilogy and the prequels. The Jedi *were* imperfect, and complicit, and Obi-Wan *was* biased, and lying to both himself and to Luke. The Last Jedi showed the aftermath of Luke not being given the big picture (those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it) and The Acolyte explored the earlier days of the flaws that existed within the Jedi order and Jedi philosophy the whole time. I appreciate that, because Lucas never really tackled it head on even though he's the one who put it there. I don't need to look at the Jedi through rose tinted glasses. They're cops, and clergy, and they have the inherent problems of both, and their efforts to shut out the dark side can become the very thing that lets it in. I'm all for acknowledging that alongside the good that they are also capable of. That's nuance. I like that. I don't think The Acolyte is a perfect masterpiece by any means, but it's a piece of the puzzle. And The Last Jedi is a misunderstood and underappreciated gem that was only undermined by what came after it. And I don't mean Solo: that was fun. Rise of Skywalker, on the other hand, was just a glorified filler episode and shouldn't have been rushed into production just to meet a release date.

I love Rebels too, and I don't want to be all my star wars is better than your star wars either except the creator of the acolyte and various supporters are saying their star wars is better than the rest of star wars and the only reason this argument is going on for so long is because they just ignore everyone's opinion and never care to try and see another side to things. Disney began their Star Wars era by lying to George Lucas' face and locking his ideas away for no one to ever see and then saying "we have no source material" they have no respect for anything and can't make a popular franchise to save their life so they bought someone else's and try to mold it into what they want.
