Sam is a hero! This is The most important issue re: modern Mormonism. If we don't protect the children we have failed as adults! This is why ex-Mormons, even those of us without kids, can't "leave the church alone."

This is great, but does not go far enough. There needs to be comprehensive background checks on anybody in the LDS Church, that is going to be working with children... PERIOD!

Mr. Young may be the most earnestly sincere and decent man in Utah, and it's just a damned shame that they punished him for his very moral and sensible suggestions for reform.

It's sad, but if a person is respected or admired by others, the Church feels they MUST discredit or malign the person to prevent others from following that person.

You are a brave man, Sam. You're right that it protects the Church as it also protects the children. The idea that insubordination = apostasy, well, it sound like it's a path to unrighteous dominion...

These interviews groom kids for Pedos, so true. I always thought this programming was what made Elizabeth Smart an easy target. She already said the gum chewing analogy of a "used" girl defeated her and made her feel "who's gonna want me now." I hope Elizabeth will get behind this. It would be great if you reached out to her re: your book.

Sam Young is such an authentic, kind, and enthusiastic man. I hope he doesn’t get excommunicated if he doesn’t want to be and I really do hope the Church makes those changes. I’m no longer a member, but I love all those who still attend and pray this horror will end.

First and foremost - Sam, I commend you for this valiant effort. So few would stand up as you have. I believe your battle is worthwhile! I don't believe the church will change the policy on interviews (they've already given an official, public response), but I believe you are bringing much-needed attention to this terrible issue. If anything, it will open people's eyes to even more questionable behavior that has gone on for decades within "God's only true and living church on the face of the earth". If this leads to more members departing, or more not joining to begin with, then your efforts will have been fruitful. Perhaps more importantly, I hope it leads to children who have been harmed getting the recognition and help they need. As John alluded several times during your discussion, Sam, I believe your efforts will undoubtedly lead to your excommunication from the church. As you hold to your guns, you will find yourself outside of the organization. There is no middle ground there. As you are going through that process, consider the conversation you and John had beginning at around 29:31. John asks a key question -- "Why not, if you believe they're God's servants?" There is no good answer to that question for a faithful member. Continued well wishes in this important journey, Sam. Thank you for being a champion of this important cause!

Treating others rough? How about when the leaders threatens someone that dares to disagree with any church leaders, that their going to lose their church membership? Why in the hell do we vote anyway, regarding "the law of common consent?" Oh yeah, I totally forgot... I'm asking yet another damn question!!! Oh, don't ask ANYTHING!

I don't feel like they have truly condemned racism and the horrible history they have is appalling. Prophets of the bible didn't make mistakes like the Mormon prophets do. It's not the same and they shouldn't be excused for it. I am with you on the private interviews with the children though. That needs to stop.

The reason that the Mormon Prophets retrack their statements and beliefs is because they are FALSE PROPHETS! All you have to do is google or research the bible on what Jesus said about false prophets and you'll understand what the difference and meaning of a "True" prophet is versus a "False" prophet..... Jesus warned us about the statements and beliefs and consequences in following a false prophet.

Why would the Utah State legislature make it illegal to record an interview between a bishop and a child. What possible rationale could they have for this? Utah is such a theocracy. Blaaaahhhhhh and Ugh!

Though his reasoning is the commendable why to say it is wrong for this practice to be a continued thing, he in self defense or fear 😨 of the cult he still calls a good (not) so called church, mind you his 45 years of indoctrination is giving way to him openly admitting to being a suck up to the cult still & wants to be the still good boy in right standing in this cult he calls a good "church". In other words all of the other crap they choose to be & do is ok. The all of the shame games, the many controlling dictatorship over the people's minds so their conned into belief it's true. Why he did stick up for the cult whatever Mormon book on how in it needs to be interpreted in a different way. So saying all of this with him riding the fence he still gravitates towards the cult "church" is good overall. And with his belief still strongly for the cult 45 years impregnated makes his cause commendable but deep down he's still a cult member through & through. Remember he put it out there he wasn't messing with the cults " church" ordinances, ECT. whatever, rules, policies, so it's proof the cult mattered still in him to "obey" period. It's living believing brainwashed mind set of 45 years to just let go like that. It was the controlling mind set dictatorship over him over these 45 years that brings him out like it does, protect the cult say it's good, stick up for it.. Even to say the bishop/ stake president blah, blah, blah, have so much to do, even the bishop with a f/ t job, how two fake not for real any of them so called apostles were coming on board along with another president? To how it all takes time/prayers & that God is working through them all, blah, blah, blah, so he is in the cults belief God is still working with the cult in this way tells you he's still siding with the cult "church." His so called testimony is for the cult. He has the fear 😨 of them as do the 3 supposed bishops who co signed his petition BUT IN THE PRIVATE MANNER. The worry of what would happen to them. Not 🤬 this why reason of the dispute caused him to not look w/in the cult to see how it was wrong & damaging elsewhere

James Everett Amen. March for the children 😂 I obviously can’t speak for everyone but I sat for every 6 month and yearly interview with a member of the bishopric and can’t say I ever felt “creeped” out. It’s a simple question about whether you’ve been struggling with immorality. The discussion from there depends really on how far you, the one being interviewed, wants to take it. I trusted my bishop and his counselors growing up, I felt like I knew them well. People act like it’s a question they’re just loving to ask, pretty sure they don’t. And I’m pretty certain this isn’t the way to go about “changing” policy in the church. This is absolutely apostate behavior. If you’re having doubts about your faith, talk to your bishop, talk to the missionaries, talk to your own parents, talk to your best friend in the ward. There’s plenty of places to turn besides exmormon websites.

@@brittneybennett7866 Ahhh so you and the bishop had a good time then ? He must have used the sacred olive oil they put on your head for blessings ... but this time he put it on his head ? Ya I wish they would of had relief society ladies (hot ones) help out with interviewing teenage boys about their masturbation habits ;) They don't call them the RELIEF Society for nothing eh ?

@James Everett What generation are you from? Because all the really horrific stories about mormon practices , are from the older generations. It's just taken them 40-50-60 years to now talk about it. I myself was a bit traumatized by my 12 year old interview (early 1980's) , because I didn't know what was coming. Which my step dad waiting in the hall , seeing me after , said he should have prepared me. Anyways this was to get ordained a deacon , so when he asked if I masturbated , I had all kinds of thoughts racing through my head about if I should lie , and it almost seemed he wanted me to lie. But I never was a very good liar ... even though I flatly denied ever masturbating but crying and blubbering about it. He just kind of smiled , and the interview was over. That sunday I was ordained a deacon and proudly passed out the sacrament with my friends in the ward who were also new deacons within that year. Including the bishops son being one of them. Who when we had sleep overs , he liked to play truth or dare wich often led to masturbation. And I can't remember if it was that same year or the next. But we all went to the temple and got babtized for the dead. Having done plenty of jerking off , and lying about it. So my thoughts on why the questions are asked , is not to ascertain worthiness ... they are to breed propitiative tithe paying people in the church. That's it ... and that's why they will not stop doing it ... because it is probably their most useful tool towards that end. Millions of members get callings / priesthood / go to the temple ... all knowing full well they lied at their worthiness interview ... and still have a good time ;) Because lying is second nature in mormonism . You simply have to to exist in it.

@@Mk101T - the 1st time I was asked about it, I don't think I even knew a word for it. But another kid warned me he would ask about "jacking off". Believe it or not I wasn't even sure what that was, because I couldn't picture what it meant. But I was more embarrassed to give a talk in church than to be asked about that. To my generation trauma would be a mob killing my parents and my little sister while I got away, and lived to tell about it. I do feel bad for you guys though. I can only pray your food is never under or overcooked. Discomfort and trauma were completely different things for us. Discomfort was part of growing up and learning to handle problems, deal with reality, etc. I don't think it's your fault that you were raised believing you should never feel uncomfortable. Your parents are probably from my generation and got some "funny" ideas about child psychology. I never "jived" with my own generation that much either, so I must have got my Dad's generation's philosophy, which was that being embarrassed or even intimidated was just something to "get over yourself" about. Intimidation was what you had to face if you wanted to grow up and be able to solve problems, especially "people problems". I shudder to think what kind of soldiers your generation would make, but hopefully boot camp will help with some of it. How would you deal with war if it ever came to an invasion? I'm guessing the majority of my generation assumed there would never be tough times or intimidating people to deal with in the form of a national enemy. Come to think of it, they were already on the anti-war/appeasement path and open to communist ideology, which has now flooded the colleges, and is what the younger generation is getting. No, I don't blame you at all when I remember the 'hippie' era, and realize these are now your parents and grandparents.
