Hey Sam, I work on these cars almost daily and felt that I could provide some input. The coolant level is checked with the engine cold I tend to run them on the low line on my cars. They are known to have some wacky cooling systems that like to cause all kinds of trouble. Unfortunately most of the time these cars have internal leaks it's a cracked head. These cars are known to have heads that will develop cracks that will need to be repaired. The head gaskets are very strong on the m96 and m97 engines and rarely fail. Good luck to you Sam and can't wait to see this car back up and running.

I've never been able to open mine by connecting the jump pack and using the door sill switch. The local independent Porsche shop told me to use the button on the key instead. Worked first time. His theory was that related to the security system. For an otherwise brilliantly engineered card this just drives me mad.

I had the same problem on my Cayman. I think when the car "sleeps" for a long time, the car is powers off everything to save the battery including the alarm system and remote FOB. I forgot how I got in the frunk but after that incident, I put a trickle charge cable that's externally accessible.
@theesj7415
@theesj7415 2 жыл бұрын
It works in my 996 but I use a trickle charger to power it. It’s possible there is so little voltage in the battery that your jump pack isn’t powering the car. I didn’t see any dash lights come on which indicates no power.

Hey Sam, Just my 2 cents worth. As you know dropping these engines is a piece of cake. What's not is the costs for these parts. I know that FCP and ECS are both running Memorial day sales at the moment. I recently bought a head gasket "kit" from FCP. It'll have all the rings and stuff you'll need. But, like my video you watched says, "While I'm in there Syndrome" will strike you hard and fast here. Don't believe me? I'm 15K in on a 996 3.6l to 4.0l bore out project that started as just a top-end refresh. This 997 has 138K miles so I'm guessing a top to bottom refresh may be in order as well as the IMS. You didn't mention how much you paid so hopefully you have some cushion to buy the necessary parts and still come out righ-side up. Good luck. Oh and if you want to sell it, I may be interested. :)

Sam Sam Sam.......... I just went thru this exact same scenario last week and tried everything you did. Then after digging in the Interwebs I found that the little electric latch on the door sill wont do the trick. You have to use the trunk button on the key fob. It took a few tries but it finally opened. Now onto what's causing the battery drain and I am certain you've already learned its a bad cable from the junction next to the transmission that goes to the starter and alternator. Happens to almost every 997.

I had same experience with a similar 997.1 model 911. Small crack in one of the heads. Common failure point in m96 and m97 engines. Head can be welded by specialty shop. Depending on amount of intermix, engine may or may not require a full rebuild.

YOU CAN'T USE THAT RELEASE! Sam and everyone else- when the 997 and newer is dead, and you hook a battery to the red pull-out, you CAN ONLY USE THE KEYLESS HOOD RELEASE ON THE KEY. Don't insert it into the ignition; turn your jumper on with the ground on the non-painted hinge. 992s have a synthetic hinge in the middle, but the flare at the door is still steel- use that. If it doesn't work, you should walk up to the right front side of the front bumper in front of the hood and press your key's remote release, as your key fob battery may be low and the receiver is there. You can't use the button right on the door seal exactly where you are working- it is inoperable. I've had a bunch of 911 Turbos and know from first-hand experience. Just did my friend's '21 Turbos S. I stopped the video at 2:19 because it is too painful to watch you go down that road. If anyone has questions about this procedure, I'm happy to help. These can be frustrating times. NEVER use a cigarette lighter jumper to attempt a jump start. That can blow the main computer, and if it doesn't, you'll have to visit a Porsche dealer to reset it. The cigarette lighter can only be used to trickle charge. BEST WISHES

Another way to get power is through the cigarette lighter, if the vehicle is equipped with one. Back in the day when the cig lighter was actually used to heat an element, you could actually buy trickle chargers that plugged into the socket to maintain your battery.

18:14 Definitely there is funny business, that's not normal. I had the same issue on my Audi, the head had a minor, almost undetectable crack on the head, between the valves, and the car drove like that for 1y, before I decided to fix it. It was so small, that the only place I had white creamy substance, was at my oil cap, but the oil seemed clean, so what he checked at the bottom, is misleading.

If it’s losing coolant and it’s not an external leak then it can go either in the oil or in the cylinders. If the latter then no external leak and you can see the air in the coolant - hence the result at the end. I had this in a boxter and I used a coolant sealer and it actually worked. I sold it fast.
@HoneyBadgerPoacher
@HoneyBadgerPoacher 2 жыл бұрын
I had a 2016 Audi S3 that was losing coolant for months but ran perfect and never overheated. I had to add coolant what seemed like every week. We searched for hours upon hours countless times to located where the fluid was going because you could smell it, but you couldn't see anything. Finally a European shop found that it was blown head gasket causing an external leak only and not an internal leak which is why the oil was not milky, no overheating, no problems. It was only leaking while the car was under power, and then falling off the engine onto the ground and/evaporating, but again only while driving which is why we could never find any of the missing coolant. Sounds similar to what you have going on.

Seems rather unlucky, that situation. Losing coolant driving and not just running, meaning the difference from rpm at the water pump spinning, that slight difference of pressure causing that seems like a very rare and like i said unlucky predicament lol

@plektosgaming
@plektosgaming 2 жыл бұрын
On my Mustang, it was the water pump - the seal was going bad under pressure and based on the design, it would leak coolant when hot. Not enough to cause oil problems. YET. This is a known issue on my car and you simply replace the water pump every 6-7 years like a engine belt. My guess is that whatever it is, you caught it before it caused major damage.

Actually, there is another trick you should try first before going for the release-cable. There is a power-socket in the passenger-footwell. This one always works. Just take a fitting cable, plug it in and connect your starter-battery to that. The switch will always work with that solution, even if it doesn't with the connector in the fuse box.

He needs to at the least get a portable lift system in place. Dropping an engine like that requires 3 ft of clearance and jack stands that high is asking for a trip to the ER. It's time to rip that band aid off and get something installed.

Sam, what happened with the Mustang? Do a giveaway please! Just for your followers in Tampa :) (editing my comment because I just finished the video): BHG AGAIN?! I'm sure at this point, not matter the signs, you just do this test first, but show last in the video for dramatic purposes.

Anyways loving your content jeep it up 😀👍

I bought a BMW 2010 528Xi and sold it 2 weeks later because I cant drive a car that doesn't have a dipstick. That is the stupidest idea any engineer has come up with.
@chriskelvin248
@chriskelvin248 2 жыл бұрын
Porsche hasn't had a dipstick since the late 50's. The FUEL dipstick!!! But silliness aside, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the change to oil level sensor was in response to most people never bothering to check their oil level unless the car started yelling at them. Basic "car walk-arounds" aren't for people who can't be bothered to avert their attention from a phone screen for a moment to observe the "actual" world.

My S-class came with a dipstick tube with a factory cap on it, and NO dipstick. There's thinking. You're supposed to check it electronically or buy a dipstick. Just like Apple now makes you buy a phone charger instead of including one, or a dongle if you want ethernet or USB A ports on your laptop. Ridiculous.

Sadly soon all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!!! (BABBVEN LAWS AND TEBBVEN ORDERS)

Sam…… when you’re pressure testing you aren’t putting air throughout the cooling system. You’re using air to pressurise the system (fluid). When you get a drop it’s not an air leak it’s a fluid leak…….

@philtowle4683
@philtowle4683 2 жыл бұрын
Not strictly true. If there is air in the system and there is a hole the air may be expelled easier than the liquid. Depending on pressure air may be dragged in when running or when system cools down. An air leak is a fluid leak.

A cracked cylinder head (good used head) and gasket is under $1000 to repair if you catch it this early. The guy who sold it was probably told by the dealer that it would need a whole new engine or something. The issue, of course, is dropping the engine. This isn't your V6 Buick where you have the top end apart in an hour.

One of those 'remote control bending neck' small cameras (the chinese versions are affordable-ish) can help you localise the problem, if for instance if the head has a small crack. put pressure on the cooling system again and take a look into the cylinders watch where the coolant is leaking into the engine, at least then you know where the actual leak is coming from before you strip the engine. Goodluck diagnosing the german!
