An observation: it appears lots of Sam’s early drawings were mechanical but that also means he had subconsciously learned to draw shapes well in his childhood, since robots are largely made of cylinders and different rectangles therefore giving him a foundation for organic figures later. I’m sure this helped him in his development of framing out a subject and transposing it with digital paint. Not to mention the plethora of resources available in a digital medium. Impressive work at that age though! Inspires me to pick art back up.

At the beginning of the video, I was flabbergasted, at how skilled you were at 12. But then you said you were taking intense art lessons at a young age. And as someone who relied on mostly myself and my older siblings, felt good about myself. I personally drew more scenery and people than I did creatures or robots so seeing the amount of detail on those things was incredible! I started realism for a bit at around 11 and 12 but then I got more interest in music. I ended up coming back around to art and is still practicing and improving!

It's amazing how much of a difference supporting your child's creative dreams can make. I gave up for SO many years because schools hated that I'd "waste my time" writing or drawing instead of doing school work. I even had a math teacher rip up some of my writing in the middle of class and toss it in the bin. I wanted to get into animal sciences when I was in 3rd grade but I was told it's a hopeless, nonexistant direction and ultimately gave up on my love for research because I got restricted from reading science and especially from bringing those books out in class. I didn't start drawing until 7th grade but faced the same issues. Now I'm a depressed adult who gave up on dreams and am always struggling to be creative. So please, support your children's creative and ambitious endeavors as much as you can and don't let the schools bully them out of it.

@@mia-saraking5479 my man, his drawings as a child look insane. is usain bolt not inherently talented? i bet on my life that you would never get to the level of usain bolt no matter the opportunites you would have along the way.not in a 1000 years .art is not different when it comes to talent. im not saying dont draw but dont be delusional and give people false hope

@@StraightNuts-mq4qs if ur bad at drawing, just say that lmao. artists dont come out of the womb with a pre-existing developed mental library. art takes years and years to perfect. again as the person above said, sam took art classes at a very young age and stayed consistent with his art studies. he would not be at the level he is today if it weren't for his fortunate upbringing, and you literally chose to ignore that. to claim art as a mere talent is blatant ignorancy. art takes countless hours of dedication and effort. i dont want your comment to unmotivate art babies who are struggling with their confidence just because you don't know how to study art. i just think you're not putting in the work you need to.

@kar1305 That's super f*cking insensitive and rude as hell to tell someone they are bad at drawing and basically calling them "lazy" (not putting in the work they need to) when you don't even know anything about them, and all because of how they feel or believe. If you don't agree with them then that's your opinion, but to tell them they think that way because they are bad at drawing and lazy? Despicable. Don't pretend you care about what other people are feeling when YOU are personally attacking and unmotivating someone else. There is a talent aspect to literally EVERYTHING humans do. It's why some people will never be on the same level as someone else. It's why a group of people taking the same exact art classes and doing the same amount of studying will always have those shining stars that seem so much more advanced than everyone else. It's why some people read faster than others. It's why some people draw faster than others. It's why some people have better memorization than others so they study less than others. It's why some people seem smarter than others. It's why some people have super creative ideas constantly and others can't think of a single one. Some people play video games all day long for years and that doesn't mean they will be able to beat someone else who hardly plays video games in a competitive game. Some of those people will actually be REALLY bad at the games, despite how long they have played them so "practice" doesn't even equal "better". People have different brains attuned to different things. To say everyone is on the same level of understanding and advances the same is simply untrue. People can put in just as much work as Sam and take the same exact art classes he has and still be worlds behind him. Learning things quickly and being good at it fast is the TALENT aspect. The wiring of your brain. Of course people can always work 200% harder or longer to get on the same level as someone else, but the fact they have to work that much harder and longer means they don't have as much natural talent for that thing as the people ahead of them that got there with less work. People will NEVER be on the same level as everyone else because we are not a hive mind with the same exact capabilities and understanding as everyone else. If you sit a 100 children down in an art classroom for the first time who have never drawn before and all give them the same lesson and hand them the same reference picture to draw from, you think every single one of those kids are going to churn out identical artworks of the same skill level? No. Some of them will end up drawing a picture that looks identical to the reference. Those few are naturally talented. And if they continue with the art and practicing, they will advance faster than all the others because from the get-go they are already really good at replicating what they see. Getting better than they currently are is obviously the skill part. But starting out that good and being able to draw what they see, identifying the shapes in a reference and recreating them is a talent. To say talent doesn't exist and people just aren't working as hard as other people is not only untrue but an insult to people that have worked their butt off and just aren't on the same level as other people who have had to put in LESS work.

This is insane! You and I are around the same age and started drawing around the same age, yet the skill level is WORLDS apart. The drawings from when you were 13-15 look better than my drawings now at 26 lmao. You were always so good! I do appreciate the background you give for how you worked on your craft. I definitely had a massive obstacle in not having a good support system for my passions. I often faced harsh, unfounded criticism and comments that lead to me becoming burnt out on art once I finished high school. I'm only getting back into it now and your videos have been such a joy for me and are great at refreshing my memory. Thank you for sharing your content with us.

i went into this video pretty confident and got absolutely floored. the three dimensional feel of the elementary and middle school works is insane, and the natural understanding of colour is just.... holy crap. that brown forest painting goes so hard. the humans are scuffed ofc, thats a given, but the battleship, mecha, landmark and monster designs are so incredibly detailed and look so impressive, id really not be surprised to see some of them in a professional book. the sheer level of creativity man. yeeeesh

It's the evolution of your, mine and everyone else's art that matters, not the "objective" quality itself. A quick 20 minute sketch I make now looks better than a 2 hour drawing when I first started. And it's that improvement that makes me happy and should make everyone who pursues art happy

I am so happy and surprised to see that Sam is a fan of Transformers, that too a pretty big one at that! Some of the Transformers names I see in the book aren't ones that someone who's only casually watched Transformers would know, he's definitely done some digging around. As a huge fan of Transformers myself, it's nice to see someone who I follow share the same interests as me. With all that said... PLEASE DRAW MORE TRANSFORMERS SAM!!! I would love to see you approach drawing them in your current art style!
