Sam Harris speaks with Helen Lewis about the culture wars. They discuss the role of journalists, DEI, political polarization, feminism, transgender activism, gender roles, the Rotherham scandal, Islam and jihadism, Elon Musk and X, the future of the Democratic Party, and other topics.
Helen Lewis is a staff writer at The Atlantic, where she writes about politics and culture. Last year she traveled to Austin to explore what Joe Rogan has done to the city, profiled the controversial American literacy guru Lucy Calkins, and spent the election campaign season in Pennsylvania.
Helen is also the host of the BBC's Strong Message Here and Helen Lewis Has Left The Chat. Her first book, 2020's Difficult Women: A History of Feminism in 11 Fights, was a Sunday Times bestseller. Her second book, The Genius Myth, explores how the modern idea of genius ― a class of special people ― is distorting our view of the world. It will be published in the summer by Jonathan Cape (UK) and Thesis (US). She writes a weekly Substack, The Bluestocking.

It is mockable that she says UK politics are in a better state than US politics. Britains educated class is completely isolated from responding to any of the populations demands. They are totally incapable of backtracking on mass immigration and improving life for young people. At least Trump and Sanders, on opposite sides of the spectrum, are angry and putting reforms into law. I love British history and culture, and being American, I am obviously culturally British by descent (and am part British by blood as well). But their elite has absolutely let them down and, unlike America they have no revolutionary history to draw upon to renew and wipe away bureaucracy. They also live on a small island and have fewer options to go live if you want a new way of life.

Right, influencers and podcasters do that but journalists and mainstream media? They're just impeccable moral people. Right. The ENTIRE reasons why people turned to people like Rogan is BECAUSE mainstream journalists and media are so corrupted. Rogan, for all his faults and whether you agree with him or not, is at least way more transparent and honest than you people. Wasn't that part of the reasons why Sam used to be friends with him? "Everything feels like a marketplace" This is why I'd love for you to discuss more about economics Sam. I know it's not your strong suit as you've mentioned in the past, but there are so many of us who feel that the root cause of so much of this is Capitalism. I want to believe that it's oversimplified, but it always seems to come back to the way our economy is structured under a capitalist economic model. Please tell me and others how and why we're wrong to feel this way. Please interview top economists that can reliably represent each theory, Capitalism, Socialism, Communism etc. We'd love to learn more.

We once had the Fairness Doctrine (removed during the Regan administration) the removal of which allowed and led to one-sided opinion radio and TV (think Rush Limbaugh or Keith Olberman) and then we passed the TeleCommunications Act of 1996, which resulted in the consolidation of media by the ultra wealthy (think Rupert Murdoch, Jeff Bezos and Michael Bloomberg). One-sided media is proving to be much more lucrative than providing equal content. Until this is fixed I don’t see how the political polarization improves.

Not sure that would be the most suitable version of Sam required at this time. Besides, he has delineated his thoughts via multiple books, videos-that Sam remains. It’s onto the next quest. After 4 years of the nightmare most of us experienced. How does this not apply to democrats and Trump. Maybe as an independent I don’t get either side. I don’t see Trump as a classical republican and really thought this is when RFK and Tulsi got brought in. Tulsi and RFK were the democrats, over all other parties, I was excited to vote for. I guess I will get blasted for saying that because they are traitors to democratic collective. You don’t to be MAGA, we need someone to push back. I don't know any other content creator that hides the bulk of their content behind a pay wall. Many of them have a pay wall, and they'll put perks behind it, like early access, the chance to chat with them, or bonus content, like if they do a 90 minute show there might be 30 mins of bonus "member only" content at the end. But Sam is the only one who gives you a little 25% appetizer for free and then wants you to pay for the remaining 75%.

@ I have premium so I wouldn't notice if there's no ads. I think that's a dumb way to do it though. I'd rather he just make it have ads and collect the ad revenue. I already pay for youtube premium, which would give him a cut if he accepted ads, but now I have to specifically pay him extra to actually view his content? Or he could just accept sponsors and have a short sponsor segment, which anyone can choose to watch or skip. And he offers free subs to people who "need" help. I don't need help. I would feel dishonest emailing him and begging for a free sub. Why do things differently than every other content creator out there? He says it's because he'd be beholden to advertisers, but I disagree, I think you can have sponsors and remain honest. Andrew Huberman has a ton of sponsors, but I've never once got the impression he's being dishonest or holding back his opinion to please his sponsors. Plus, Sam is rich anyway. Is he really totally dependent on his sub revenue to be able to do this? He should be able to live off interest and dividends. He could also do like most other streamers do, accept donations. Streamers live off donations. I'm sure plenty of people would be willing to donate. Matter fact, I would. I would donate to him if he changed his business model and put all his content up for free. But I'm not going to sub to a bunch of different creators.

And now Jorand is really really religious (to much), and Sams whole career is about being atheist. I also think Jordan helped influence Ayaan Hirsi Ali to be chrsitian, and she was Sams friend for a long time before Jordan, and she was a big atheist voice. All that surely amounts to a big problem.
