Yeah, it looks pretty simple layout, which is best for dependability.. Tiller is real real nice and simple on a 29 footer. Main sail is fine dude, broken in sail is excellent for light, med, heavy winds. Learn how too trim it. Stitch up and repair loose thread. A soft sail in light winds when you get the luff just right, coming in off the Genny you'll feel her accelerate. Invest in stuff that will make your time aboard comfortable and economical A freezer, osmosis water, cock pit cushions and enclosure, zodiac dingy. Take all the wood stuff off, refinish, re bed everything. Service clean winches. Replace all the lexan windows, (deep tint is nice) and rebed. Scrub, scrub, scrub, the deck and hull and seal buff with wax. Check thru hull fittings, rebed, replace. I like your thinking for not installing a new motor, if anything you could go with a outboard hook up, that could double as a tender on the dingy. That's a lot of elbow grease, that will make you quite content of your little home. Switch all your lighting to leds. Very nice boat. Don't waste your money on crap. Organize your projects, expenses, keep a log, and be..... Very satisfied when you go back and see what you accomplished.

As a owner of a bayfield29 myself I must say I think there are a few things odd about this boat. I know each one was slightly different and this looks like a older example then my later 1983/84 (one of the last hulls made before the fire that closed the manufacturing) Also I think that line on the mast is NOT the main Halyard it’s the main topping lift. The main halyard should be coming out a sheath at the bottom of the mast directed to the winch on the port side of the companionway the other two halyards for the head sails to the winches on the starboard side. The saloon table was removed (if it had one) there should be a door on the head. BUT also I’m not sure how much of what is on my own boat was standard and how much were owner ordered factory add ons. (I know the Edson wheel I have was a $1000.00 option new) also the teak (teak plywood actually) flooring in my boat was a option as well two color paint scheme on my boat was also a option this one does not have also the extended bowsprit rig was a option also And you will see soon enough if you sail it as is the reason for the extended bowsprit, the head sails drive this boat and you will find without the extended bowsprit you will need to reef the main or easy the main sheet to avoid excessive weather helm. (It’s highly likely the bow sprite has some rot on the main beam anyway so upgrading it to the extended bowsprit when you repair it might be a good idea. and moving the head stay further out will be a vast improvement to how she sails. (Also makes tacking the jib through the gap much simpler) The old alcohol cooktop and no propane locker is also a sign of a earlier model. The aft lazaret lid without the cubby to stash the main sheet is also a sign of earlier-model OR it was modified OR these were changed on models equipped with the Edson wheel to make for a higher seat vs the tiller steering you would sit to the side not in the back. The propane locker on later boats was molded into the port side aft corner. And had a drain out below (served to drain any water out and also if there was a leak propane fumes would vent out that as well and NOT communicate with the engine compartment or main cockpit lockers. Over all this looks like a decent boat for free but as Bayfield go not the finest example.

Nice to see someone giving an old boat away rather than letting it molder away paying slip or yard fees for years hoping that someone will come along and buy it . I’ve often thought it would be great if some people got together and created some kind of national register where maybe older sailors or those that cannot sail for one reason or another would donate their boats and maybe even pass on their knowledge and help to young people that maybe can’t afford big bucks to get into sailing or small groups who could share the costs of ownership and maintenance. I think there are lots and lots of people who dream of getting into sailing but don’t have the budget . I’d also think that the yards associated trades and chandlers etc etc would benefit as well from the recycling of boats rather than leaving them to rot .

Getting a free boat was a well deserved piece of luck 😁 I’ll bow to your knowledge and experience but was interested in your comment about not liking keel stepped masts. I’ve long held the belief that keel stepped masts were more stable and the ideal option. Perhaps it’s one of those ‘old chestnut’ subjects that yachtsmen argue about? No idea. However can see your point regarding leaks with deck stepped. Have just started watching your excellent posts, they’re really great and so informative. A silly thing maybe but I like the fact the only music I’ve heard so far is your own self made music and your videos aren’t swathed in awful intrusive irritating overused music so often accompanied on KZbin videos. The sound of the sea and your commentary works so very well 👍 Thank you 🙏
@samholmessailing Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I think most of the advantages people say about keel stepped masts are about them being stronger or more of the mast remaining if you’re dismasted but deck stepped masts can be made plenty strong enough too. Ive never had one break and there is no problem with leaking and it’s easier to lower if you need to.

I would consider putting in a permanent eletric engine system in, you have plenty of storage for battery cells and given the small amount of space it would be ideal (where the eletric engine would go). As a backup you could have a small silent generator stored below which could be used to power the system should the batteries be flat and it is an emergency! silent motor with those windless days all drive by the sun :)

I don't know the law in Florida, but in my State a workman's lien attachs to the boat for work performed. There doesn't have to be an actual estimate, it's enough if the old owner did something that led the mechanic to believe he was requesting work be done. Being shocked by the bill later doesn't matter. You will want to check with a lawyer in Florida. The exact law and facts matter. Certainly check before you put any money into the boat, because that workman's lien would likely be superior to your interest. You might find you took a worthless boat and made it valuable enough for the mechanic to bother enforcing his lien.

Hey Sam, just came across your channel and now binge watching to get caught up. I am in central Florida and have been many of the same places I see on your channel. I was a avid sailor myself for years and grew up racing my 14 ft Hobie in local fleets here on the inland lakes. Just sold my 36 ft Catalina that I kept at Pasadena Marina near Clearwater. I have got out of sailing all together but now after watching your videos I think the spark has ignited once again. I really am thinking of another Catamaran. Thanks again for the inspiration and great videos.

I worked for the Gozzard family building their boats in the 80's, These are very seaworthy boats. Have a large print of a Bayfield 40 in my house, it's lovely.

Very cool! A free sailboat...you know what they say..."Good things come to good people. And I can tell you're a very nice person. Happy sailing.

You can add maybe a decent 4-stroke outboard with power tilt-trim and you would be able to handle moderate wind and current, just no all day motoring like with a diesel. Yamaha makes a 9.9hp high-thrust and Honda makes a 15hp available with tilt-trim. You have a built-in fridge and that extra fridge just takes up space and draws 4amps. If you pickle vegetables and have hard cheeses and canned fish/meats you don't really need a fridge. I used restaurant packs of mayonaise to avoid having to refrigerate open jars. Eggs just need to be kept cool, and maybe waxed for longer storage. Boxed milk doesn't need refrigeration and you usually finish a box in one setting anyway. Not criticizing, just offering some advice in the comments section so you get higher ratings for your video. Fyi, I watched your Hawaii video a few years back and that was probably my main inspiration. I eventually picked up a used sailboat, also met a guy and we sailed to Hawaii on his boat. I also sailed down Baja California. But I did like the owner of this boat and basically gave it away, but I might get another boat in a few years which will hopefully be my "forever boat". Anyway, hi from China.

Bayfield boats were made here in Ontario, Canada, very solid and with two head sails can be sailed in all kinds of weather. Ted Gozzard was the designer and builder, you cant go wrong wih that boat.

WOW - very nice for a free boat. I think I'd work on the seals and make sure everything is tight first. AWESOME deal!

I'm sure it's been said before but Dde! A boat for free!? Wow. And some cool kit from sponsors (?). Looking forward to seeing this bad boy in action. You deserve good things for the relaxed feels you give me. Figure it's a kharmic thing. Rock on man.

Nice boat for free, and already in a slip! I had a chance at a frer saiboat in a slip once, but it did not allow liveaboard, so I had to pass it up. I have a stinkboat, (gas driven), 23 ft cabin cruiser. I have stayed on board twice now down at Bahia Honda marina. First time was 12 days, second was eight days, electric provided for the air conditioning. I like the trailering ability I have to tow distance.

Wow! That is so damn nice of the guy to gift you the boat! She is super roomie with a 10ft beam and everything looks to be in useable condition. Did you look at the hull under water? I'm sure you are aware of all that being the sailing icon that you are. All you need is a 10 or 20hp outboard and you are all set. Maybe offer the guy that rebuilt the diesel a thousand dollars and you will take the motor off his hands. Seems like it would be a difficult item to sell. A little work and the Mira Tamale will be ready to sail to Oahu! Enough rambling, I digress. Congratulations on the beautiful new to you vessel and I hope all the renovations/repairs are cheap and easy! Oh, forgot to ask... are there any electronics onboard? Hopefully.

Had same issue with mainsail. Get a new rope sewed into the luff and it will be ok. Nice find. The b29 is the best sailing Bayfield.

Consider throwing in an inexpensive 250cc motor from Harbor Freight. Not a big investment, but retain ease of docking. Good luck and thanks as always, Sam!

Hi. I agree with all the comments; Bayfields are well built of high quality materials - very like your Cape Dory. You are going to have a blast. If you haul out in March consider Riverside Marina in Fort Pierce. Only a couple of miles from the ocean, DIY yard, Publix 10 minutes away on a bike. I visited a couple of weeks ago and it is still the same funky place it was in 2016. Thinking of the future, l am sure you are all over the Thunderstruck Motors website. Your new boat is a shoe in for their 10 kw kit. The "Herring" is going to be jealous!

That’s cool. Many, many years ago there was a pretty new 29 bayfeild boat in Quebec called captain crunch. It was very stiff and liked a good blow. Solid boat, loads of room, and dependable. Enjoy.
