Eurowings Airbus A319: "Kai Tak" style visual approach and landing on runway 09 at Samos International Airport, SMI / LGSM, on Samos Island in Greece.
Original charts, cockpit, Instruments (PFD and ND) and pilots view. With cockpit audio and ATIS (automatic terminal information service) audio and some explanations from the crew. Filmed with 5 cameras in 4k quality. Captain is pilot flying and first officer pilot monitoring. ATC (air traffic control) callsign is Eurowings 31DA (Eurowings Tree One Delta Alpha). Registration D-AGWB
During the manual flying part of the approach, this video highlights the sidestick of the captain. PFD (primary flight display) and ND (navigation display) are also visible during the approach.
Samos is a very special airport: The runway is not very long and due to the mountains, a straight in approach to runway 09 is not possible. The last part of the approach to Samos has to be flown as a visual maneuver for the lineup of the airplane on the final runway track. Because of this design, the approach is often referred to as "Greek Kai Tak" approach. The village of Ireo and the Glasshouse are some of the landmarks for the visual pattern.

The charts presented in this video are the original charts used during the flight. Many thanks to Lufthansa Systems (Lido mPilot and Lido eRoute Manual) for the permission to show them in the video. This charts are for information purposes only and not for navigational use!

These kind of videos are dangerous… I saw a Samos landing video like this around 10 years ago, and booked a holiday to Samos so I could experience the landing myself. It was worth it. I stayed in a hotel which was under the departure end of the runway. I would lie on a lounger, watching planes fly over at a couple of hundred feet overhead. Would recommend if you have a partner who tolerates your aviation obsession! ❤😂

Kai Tak was always so strange - you could look out the aircraft windows and clearly see people hanging their washing, or sometimes waving. This was years ago obviously, when thunderous older planes, even Concorde ocassionally I think, used to fly over top of those homes. I often wondered how those people slept! Thankfully aircraft like your A-series CEOs and NEOs are so much more quiet!! Thank you as always Stefan!

@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 11 ай бұрын

Great piece of work. One of the best in-flight channels on KZbin... could you explain the reason for the engine cool down procedure prior to shutdown please?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the great feedback! Please tell everybody about the channel! The engines require a 3 minute cooldown period after high thrust application. The engine manufacturer and Airbus publish this information in the standard operating procedures. Shutting off the engines earlier may damage them on the long run. Reason is that the engines are getting very hot during the operation and the cooldown from lots of power to no power should be done over this cooldown time period.

Thanks for watching and for sharing your approach solution. That is all correct and reflects appropriately what we do during the final stage of the approach. The main reference is the outside view, and depending on the current wind situation, the exact values vary a little. Before we fly to Samos the first time, we get training in the fullflight simulator, and we fly as an observer to the airport.

Thanks for watching and your suggestion. You can switch on the CC on youtube. That translates the audio into written text. Sometimes the auto translation is not working that good. At some videos, I corrected that. I suggest that you hear the audio several times and that you also hear ATC on LiveATC or other outlets. The more often you hear the aviation language, the better you will understand it.

Thanks for watching and your friendly feedback! The selected speed kept the speed target fixed. Flying managed speed would have changed the speed target continuously with a changing wind due to the groundspeed mini function. Also we do not want to be too fast during the final turn.

How the V/DEV scale suddenly appeared on the Primary Flight Display? How is it activated?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Good question. The VDEV was there all the time. It started as a green dot which you can see in the upper right corner, left of the altitude tape of the PFD. With the activation of the approach phase, the green dot disappeared and instead the V/DEV showed up at the position where you usually see the glideslope during an ILS approach. The exact value is always awailable on the PROG page of the MCDU.

Thank you again for this great video! Just a quick question... As far as I know from watching your videos, you're on the A320 Family (A319, A320, A321 and neo). In your weekly videos you switch types almost every time. Do you in "reality" switch that often or do you have "blocks" - like for example the next few weeks you're on the A319, the following weeks on the A320 etc..? And what are like the main differences between those types? Is it for you like "oh ok today it's an A319, now I've got to do this and that different from my last flight with an A321? Thanks again und schönes Wochenende! :)
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, your nice feedback and your question! We fly the A320 family. Usually it does not change during the day. But it may be today an Airbus A319 and tomorrow an Airbus A320. We even have different versions of the 319s and 320s. Like 319 with IAE engines and some with CFM engines or A320-214, 216, NEO .... They all fly very similar. We know the differences from trainings and personal experience. It is not a problem at all. One of the differences is the climb performance: The NEO climbs very good and the CEO not that good if the plane is heavy. Also the flare is a little different: A heavy A321 needs to be flared earlier than a light A319. The approach speeds are also different: The A321 is a few knots faster than A320 and A319 during the final approach. The A321 is very stable in the approach. This are just a few items. There are more. Einen schönen Tag noch!

@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thanks for answering all my questions! Really appreciate it! :) Is there a favourite for you among the A320 family? This is awesome. I love the airbus so much. Question to you, a full auto-land requires at least an ILS CAT III to do, so like you can't do an auto-land with RNAV?

Also, how does TRK/FPA help in terms of a manual landing compared to a mode like HDG/VS?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your feedback! You are correct, autoland is only possible with an ILS. The Airbus would try an autoland also with a CAT 1 ILS. But the result may be bad. The CAT 3 ILS requires a certain signal quality, emergency power backup and a certain design of the terrain infront of the threshold. For example: If there would be a ditch in front of the threshold, you can install an ILS, but only CAT1. Autoland with RNAV is not possible. The Airbus system design does not allow that.

This is just another indication. It helps a little because we want to fly the runway track to the runway. The heading usually changes during the approach due to changing winds. But the track will be constant.

Fantastic! One question - why wait one minute before shutting down the engines?

How long is the engine cool down time on the 320? I see that short taxi and the need to wait before engine shutdown. Thanks

The cooldown times are published and recommended by the manufacturer of the engines and Airbus. Here it was 3 minutes after high thrust application.

Why the engines were switched off 50 seconds after parking the airplane?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
For cooling reasons of the engines, we wait - whenever possible - in accordance to the SOP 3 minutes after high thrust application before we shutdown the engines. If the taxi-in is short, we wait at the parking position.

Why aren't there consistent checks on speed brake use ?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Would you please explain your question a little more. I used the speedbrakes as needed. If I would have used the speedbrakes with more than idle power, the Airbus would tell us about it because it would make no sense.

@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Not a criticism, just a question. When you deploy flaps/change heading/reduce speed/disengage AP etc you get check from FO (or none flying P). But I don't hear announcement of speedbrake use. That was all my question was.
