This is a product that has been on my mind for a while. The ground is just as hard on a bicycle as it is on a dirt bike and I always wear a chest protector on my dirt bike. But not body armor. My question is why not wear a moto style underprotector and a Sam's bike's jersey?

A nice review. A detail that I think is important to point out is that if you have the zip in the middle at the front, you will get a split chest plate. A split chest plate means that a hit is spread less widely and you have a greater chance of splitting the sternum. If you have a full chest plate and the zip on the side, you will avoid this. This is from the painful experience of a friend.

4 weeks ago I crashed hard onto my shoulder and back on a dry dusty hard pack DH track wearing the Leatt Stealth (light) jacket. I bought it before your review but for the same reasons. Ended up with a broken collarbone that needed a plate /surgery and 6 broken ribs down my back. It had worked well though in a lighter crash onto softer ground. Once I’m riding again I’m thinking I’ll invest in the Fox D30 jacket for DH tracks and race days and wear the Leatt for everyday enduro riding.

One of the most important things to consider after the fit and weight of course is the quality of the padding. It's really difficult to beat d30 when it comes to protection. Some have traditional padding which are temperature dependent too. So once you body warms it up, it's going to be more comfortable, however how about on impact? d30 stiffens and distribute the impact better.

But it needs a zipper!! So hard to get off, a contortion exercise. Really wish they would make the same jersey but add a side zipper.

Man I wish I'd found this video about 4 months ago. I too had a crash that resulted in my looking into body armor. Mine was an internal injury in a ruptured spleen back in February this year. My sisters bought me a Troy Lee 7855 full upper torso jacket(?). Complete PITA to get on and off, pretty lightweight, but not very well ventilated. My wife and mother-in-law got me a Leatt Body Protector 5.5. Amazing protection, easy on/off, well ventilated, but it's literally 2.95 kg. I definitely would have landed on that Leatt Body Protector ReaFlex Stealth as you did, had I known about it back in February/March. Thanks for the video, it's very informative.

Good comparison! i like the Leatt gear for ventilation, comfort and all day protection. I have the 3DF AirFit Lite Body Protector and it has saved me a couple of times in the past. However despite the armor, i still broke my collar bone last week. Single compound fracture. Full blow to the shoulder on asphalt (of all things...). Im looking at no riding for a couple of months probably. So yeah, wear the armor, but never assume you are invincible! Armor can only go so far, and bones still take a massive hit on impact.

Not the easiest to get on/off and pretty hot to wear but I prefer the full core protection of the Troy Lee 7850 HW vest. I too have broken ribs in the past and I don't think many of the vests today provide adequate core protection. It's a tough decision because you won't know if it works until you've tested it...

Really well done review, and very helpful since these are difficult to choose. I purchased the short sleeved version of your top choice Leatt Airflex Stealth. I opted for this one for the same reasons you stated. It doesn't have the most protection, but it's comfortable and breathes pretty well. Anything more substantial and I knew I wouldn't wear it in warmer months and the best protection does you no good if you aren't wearing it. I have crashed in it a few times and it's protected me well. One time I went OTB and landed on my shoulder and I barely felt it. My shoulder was a bit sore the next day so I can only imagine how I would have felt if I hadn't been wearing it. I decided to go with the short sleeved version and separate elbow pads simply to have the flexibility to forego the body armor and just wear elbow pads on certain rides, which I have done occasionally on hot days. Even with the good ventilation, you will obviously sweat more wearing this body armor than you would without. If you already have elbow pads you like, that may also be a reason for someone to choose the short sleeved version for less money. That said, it is possible that the long sleeved version would provide better elbow protection that doesn't slide as much as separate elbow pads.

This was very helpful as I was on the fence and the full Fox Titan armour is for hardcore days at the bike park when feeling brave but may get squirrelly. 😂 I wanted something for those mtb days of 1-3 foot drops, smaller jumps and gaps where the injury risk is lower. Thanks for the review....I bought a Revit Offtrack for long distance adventure riding potentially in all weather conditions (prefer the layering approach to gear). Did a solo 24 day 9000 KMs trip in Indochina (I'm based in Malaysia) some months ago,and although the jacket was fine, the padding for this jacket (excluding chest pads) in total makes it pretty heavy. My question is - what you think of the idea of getting body armour instead, and taking/using the jacket minus its padding, as and when necessary. Wondering the same about knee protection now ...many thanks

That was my reasoning recently, as I too crashed unprotected with rib injuries. Went with the fox baseframe tshirt. Same core pads as the the long sleeve, but without the chest strap. Does anyone know what the difference is (if any) between the Leatt Airflex and the new Leatt Reaflex Stealth models? They look identical in every way possible except for the name. Looking at the size chart they are suggesting a large size, but I am leaning towards the medium size, which is only in stock in the Airflex version, not the Reaflex (L and XL only available until June or July).

The stitches of Fox´s jacket would blow up in a fall on rocky terrain. POC´s best on protection but only for shuttled sessions. Leatt´s first jacket is good, would go for that one. Oneill doesnt cut it, neither Alpinestars (surprising considering they are one of the best in moto body protection), Dainese so so.Preferences aside, what´s with zero gut protection? Do these brands think we have super abs? The chest has a bone cage underneath while the stomach, liver, etc have only skin as protection, I would prefere coverage there too.

Nice Sam, ive been faffing over buying the stealth tee for 2 months now lol. The only annoying part is the size guide, im a skinny 6ft3ins and they recommend xxl. I know this isnt sexy to ask, but what is ya height / chest measurement please bud - im guessing im right in the middle of L /XL. Cheers pal

@zubilok01 I didn't get on with it, went with the fox baseframe pro tee in large. Its really comfy. It doesn't have a zip and can be difficult to get off, but wearing a thin baselayer underneath completely solves that issue - already had 1 otb, piledrived onto my left shoulder and its 100% saved me from a broken shoulder, so money well spent already :-)

great review but there's no Leatt 3DF AirFit Lite or Scott Softcon AirS21. One more thing is level of pretection. Most of the have simple foam in front. The same as you, Last year i had few crashes, OTB too and felt handlebar on my chest. Now i am looking for good protection for whole my body.

I have the airfit lite (short sleeve version) and love it. i had a pretty hard crash this past summer and took the hb to the chest. I think i still at least bruised if not cracked a couple of ribs, i deffo would have been in the hospital without the vest. Gotta mention that you can take the paddings out, for washing the shirt or other uses too, i use it to ski with only the back plate inserted

I have tried a bunch of back protector. Leatt back protector is confortable easy to wear Cons is a leve 1 on T area much of a lumbar protection Size run small for americans POC back protector Size is accurate for americans The back protector cover all the spine T to S top to bottom, but on Top tends to slipt up EVOC back protector Size is pretty small for americans M size will not fit you. Once you burn that fat and get slim that can be wear and will cover all your spine with a hard plastic on the rear that will be comfortable to ride all day It has front pad as well of kind of d3o material thar will protect yout chest.

I injured my pelvis and rh clavicle in september (5 months ago). I already had G Form elbow and knee pads. I bought a troy Lee 7850 short sleeve top and some Leatt Impact shorts plus other padded undershorts. I also have a stock MTB helmet plus a Downhill helmet. I tried the downhill helmet on a local MTB Park and decided to just use it for downhill - you can't drink or spit out of it. The Leatt shorts helped make me feel better but they were annoying. Even the simple padded shorts get annoying and I'm hoping to be able to stop wearing them soon. I still have a padded cover on my seat. The GForm pads have been fine. Although I am wrecking them a bit - they all have one or two holes now. The Troy Lee 7850 top is OK in small doses. I made the mistake of wearing it on a 30km trail ride down Lake Mountain the other week. It was 18C and I sweated like a pig (do pigs actually sweat?) - even though I removed all the removable padding except at the shoulders. It has no zip and feels like its about to rip as I put it on or take it off. I alsso had a backpack water bag and a chestmount camera on. And on the long trail I stopped for a couple of times to rest so I took my top off. It was like having a sweat shower putting it back on. When I get rid of my rotator cuff (along with the clavicle) injury I hope to be able to just use shorts and a tee shirt again. And even take the padded seat cover off.

I dunno how or why, but so many MTB'ers wear so little protection I am actually quite surprised given the injuries some have had. I have the Leatt Airflex body armour, I actually choose it because the chest / back is a separate piece. When it's ragingly hot (like now) and I don't really plan on doing anything stupid, I find just wearing the chest and back piece over a short sleeve jersey keeps me comfy but protected, when it's cooler or I know I am going to push myself a bit, I wear the undershirt with it for the shoulders and elbows. Easily fit both the undershirt + chest / back piece under the jersey and don't even notice it once I'm riding. I can feel it's there but it's never restrictive in the slightest. Also recently picked up the Leatt Impact 3DF 5.0 liners. They look like they would be really awkward and bulky but I can't believe how comfy they are. It's unreal how comfy they are. Only downside is the lack of ass padding, the 4.0 apparently has the ass padding but drops the coccyx and upper hip padding and some people said the ass padding didn't feel that great in terms of how it sat;, so I went with the 5.0 and upgraded my stock seat to something a bit more forgiving. Expensive, but now super comfy and even in full armour on an Australian summer it all breathes well and is tolerable even on a hot day and great when cooler.
