Love how Sam has become the guy that doesn’t just criticize model railway companies for putting sketchy, cheap, weak motors in there locos but also comes up with genius solutions that realistically don’t cost a lot. Really says a lot about the industry.

@carlcollins89672 жыл бұрын
To create a good adaptor for the flywheels, you can buy 2mm brass tube with a 0.45mm wall thickness. That would give you a good interference fit into the flywheel and a 0.1mm tolerance to get it onto the motor shaft, which you could then glue. You get a 300mm length for about £3.50, which should do a few locos!

Very good but did I notice some wheel slip as it crested Gordon's hill? Perhaps a little more weight might help its pulling power and reduce slippage. A bit of brass tube with a 2mm OD & 1mm ID should do the trick to reuse one of those flywheels, you can check the balance with a couple of razor blades inverted as pivot points, if the balance is OK job done, but if any rebalancing is required then that could be a bit tricky :)

Nice job Sam! Have you managed to find a replacement motor for the Oxford Adams Radial? Mine went belly up and I tried your suggestion to clean out the lubricant, it ran for about 20 minutes and packed in again. It's now an expensive paperweight.
@bulwellforestgardenrailway53012 жыл бұрын
Really good solution to a (I agree) frustrating loco. The motor on mine has been fine except for a constant buzzing whilst running. The biggest issue for me though is it's complete inability to pull anything more than three wagons without a stupid amount of wheel spin. I noticed the wheel spin on yours when pulling your gwr coach rake at the end. I actually think the wheels themselves are the problem, perhaps they're just so smooth there's no grip on the track. I'd be interested to hear your opinion on the wheel spin issue as I'm not sure it's down to weight.

In your discussions with Oxford and their admission about the bad motor, did they give you at least a partial refund or credit with this model? How do you find the blu-tak holds up after many hours running and the motor starts getting a bit warm? I find blu-tak can get very soft when it gets warm. Would a dab of Hot Melt Glue maybe work better? I noticed the old motor had brass adaptors? Did they act as a flywheel as well?

Hi Sam Brilliant solution and video. I have had exactly the same problems with my 2309 Dean Goods as you. I have now received two replacement chasses and motors from Oxford (including one with an updated motor like the one that you installed), but it is still not working properly. For some reason the combination of their new motor and their new coupling adaptor that they sent me does not work as intended. Your solution is great. I live in Australia and do not have a 3D printer. Is there any way that you could sell the mounting and the coupling adaptor made by your 3D printer? I am very envious of your solution and would love to adopt it. How can I contact you about this? The 2309 is a wonderfully handsome loco which currently is unusable (my K's kit of a Dean Goods made when 60 years ago when I was teenager, now with sound and DCC, works better!). Funnily enough, my other Oxford Dean Goods, 2475, has the same motor as the 2309 and although its pulling power is poor it is still functioning just about passably. Robin from Sydney

Great repair, Sam! It runs so much better now! Quick review suggestion, as someone who lives in the US, I like American model train reviews. I've noticed that all of your American locomotive reviews have been more classic style locomotives. Can you review an American diesel that was built after the year 2000?
@andrewpalm21032 жыл бұрын
Heh, I was just considering writing a comment about re-using the flywheels, but you anticipated this, Sam! In any case, the loco runs quite well now, eh? Of course it's true that a poorly balanced flywheel can cause problems. But given all the US locos I've seen mass produced with flywheels and which have excellent running out of the box (e.g., old Athearn and current low-end Atlas) I doubt that perfection is required (at least for dual drive diesels). So I think it's a path you should try going down some day. Cheers from Wisconsin!

The cab seems to not be flush with the floor plate, like it is leaning back now... You really should try to gain back its weight loss or you'll still be unhappy with its lack of pulling power eventually. Love that livery. I remember it was already out of stock by the time you showed it way back when, or at least by the time I saw the episode. Shame companies don't keep good looking models on hand for longer. Always seems like they want the fast cash instead of gaining long term cash flow...

Hi Oliver, Some time ago I had a similar motor problem with a S15. But Hornby kindly send me a replacement motor for free for they are aware that a batch in the production line was faulty. But indeed it would be a nice upgrade if you succeed to put a coreless in the S15. And if possible share the results with the model railroaders community. Success !

@rogerking72582 жыл бұрын
Nice job, but it does make you wonder what the OE manufacturers are paying for motors if such a cheapo replacement makes for that big an improvement. It'd definitely be a good idea to refit at least one flywheel, but realistically, an adaptor would have to be turned rather than printed in order to ensure concentricity; an out of balance flywheel would cause more problems that it would solve.
@mandowarrior1232 жыл бұрын
You're parroting, and that isn't precisely right, a flywheel would ideally be weighted or trimmed to actually correctly operate. Turning is close but not perfect.

My one runs so badly it is unbelievably dire. I am really pleased that you have found a way of doing the rest of the model justice. Oh to be a fly on the wall to hear any conversations between the likes of Oxford, Dapol and Hornby and their motor suppliers when a dodgy batch occurs. By the way, to do yours truly justice, are you able to straighten the cab? Also, if you had stuck the adaptor on the other end of the motor, would it have been possible to use the existing wires instead of having to extend them? I appreciate that I am looking at it with hindsight!

One thing I do not like about my original motor, apart from its slow running, is that if you apply more than about 60% power, you tend to get occasional electrical "cracking" (i.e. sparking inside). I seem to recall that the model has sometimes shut off and only started running again after a short while. The joys of model railways!

Wonderful and clean solution again Sam. Pity about the flywheels but she does run just brilliantly, so not to worry about them at all indeed. Aren’t these micro motors genuinely fantastic for the price. The question could actually be raised why manufacturers, don’t apply these type of motors. I suppose the answer is because they are not commercially viable when it comes to part sales, lol. We can’t see any other reason frankly. However, in the end, people will find their own affordable solution anyway and if really need be, a cradle could even be made from scratch without needing a 3D printer perhaps. However a 3D printed component is a cleaner method of course.
