Hi Sam, nice review, always liked that model The Baby Warships were actually the Class 22's a similar looking design but they were diesel hydraulic traction as opposed to the diesel electric of the class 21's. Both the 21s and the 22s were built by The North British Locomotive company, which also built the 42/43 Warships and the did class 29 rebuilds. A big factor in the early withdrawal of the 29s and the Warships was the fact that the NBLC went into liquidation in 1962 and ceased trading completely in about 1966. This meant that the supply of spares for all NBLC locos dried up pretty soon after and BR had to withdraw all the companies locos as they couldn't keep them running. Also spotters back in the 60's called the 21's / 29's 'Droopies' as they looked a little bit like Droopy the cartoon dog. Have a great week Jon
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Jon - glad you did! Ahh okay - that must be my mistake then with the baby warships - thanks a lot for the info anyway, and I like the name droopies - I can definitely see why that was a thing! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@stashyjon7 жыл бұрын
A lot of people get the 21s and 22s mixed up, theres not a lot of difference externally. I think the 22s were a couple of feet shorter than the 21/29s, and the grill lay out on the sides and roof was different, but thats about it, so its an easy mistake to make. Dapol released a really nice 22 a few years ago, dunno if they are still available though, but if not you might find one second hand Jon
@anthonylester13496 жыл бұрын
Good info from above but the Class 22's were called Baby Warships because they looked like baby Class 41 A1A - A1A Warships (also by NBL), not the smaller Class 42/43 B - B ones which came later and look quite different....That 29 looks great though!

I kind a like diesels, especially the older ones, it easier to work with them. Witch one old Hornby diesels u prefer, the ring-field, or the old Tri-ang (driver) ones? I go with the Tri-ang, do to the better pick-up design (no 1 bogie = 1 pole), and better overall build.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tom, I agree - it is easier to work on them! I prefer the ring-field on these actually - although the very much older worm driven tri-ang diesel units were fantastic! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Hi Sam, thanks for this great review as always. I had one of those green 29s back in the day when it was new out in the late '70s. Sadly it got sold off with most of my stuff 30 years ago, but now I'm back into the hobby I've managed to get hold of a nice one on eBay (£26 inc postage!) which runs well. Traction is a tad disappointing though - it can only pull a maximum of three coaches, BUT they are Old Hornby Mk 1s from the 70s on plastic wheels. Are the 5 coaches your 29 is pulling on metal wheels? I'm thinking of maybe changing wheelsets if there is a considerable difference. Many thanks, all the best, Andrew
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
My pleasure Andrew, thanks for watching! Sorry to hear that yours got sold, but that's a decent bargain, glad to hear it works well for you! I think mine were on metal yeah - but it all depends on the condition of the traction tyres too! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@Mariazellerbahn5 жыл бұрын
The loco represents none of the class ... 21 nor 29 but is a hybrid of both. The long radiator side grilles were only on the pilot batch (D6100 to D6109) but were changed early on while they were still a Class 21. Windows are present on the model that became grilles on the conversion to Class 29. Lots of other detail differences that make it a hybrid.
