I found certain things lacking in the camera depart ment when I moved up from mate 20 Pro to the s22 ultra... despite the handset being several years newer. Going outside and shooting my meter reads in the dark being a perfect example, could see what I was shooting with the mate 20 Pro, /the s22 ultra being click and hope, as it still appears to be here.

I do think Samsung needs to update their cameras quick. The one good thing with building the AI into the phone is having AI enable software updates to do so much more. Before if you wanted to do something with cameras, it had to come out with the phone but if you have AI built into the cameras, it’s almost like having your own little personal worker on the phone anytime you push updates out.

Totally. The thing with Samsung is that you can see (when using the pro mode) that the camera is able to deliver much better photos. It's the processing of the auto mode that truly has a problem. I would never be a so difficult if it delivered the best pictures it is capable of.

I wish they had an exposure offset like a lot of professional cameras have. So I can set it to expose the stop and a half darker than they would do it by default. But that's probably not feasible with computational photography.

Yeah, overall the iPhone 15 Pro and S24 Ultra are about the same. It just comes down to preference and what the individual finds "better looking". Of course if you shoot in RAW or manual mode you can easily make photos from the S24 Ultra look like they were taken on the iPhone and vice versa.

for people who want to jump into conclusion with such test - remember this is pre-release software running on S24U - IP15PM has had multiple interaction of its updates and bug fixes since September so S24U will only get better with time similar to S23U

Great comparison as always. I am not sure why Samsung are not specifying the sensor size on the 5X 50MP camera unit. There are rumours this is a Sony IMX8xxx design but we will probably have to wait until a tear down video is available to get this detail. Both Sony and Apple are slowly releasing better cameras with larger sensors and higher MP counts and allowing sensor cropping but neither of following some of the chinese manufacturers with large 50MP wide an tele sensors and 1" type main cameras. Feels like they are holding back .......

Samsung makes really good phones, but they always make the mistake of marketing it for things they didn't implement well, and this tends to overshadow the other merits of the phone. Last year's s23 Ultra is a really compelling phone, rivaling even the newer iPhone 15 because Samsung didn't try to sell it as a do-it-all device. Like the iPhones, it promised little and delivered. I hope they don't start the whole number game with the S24 Ultra.

Can you tell me if your black coat in this photo comparison is truer on the S24 or iPhone 15? I feel like the true representation is the S24 based on a closer inspection on your shoulder on the right side of your face (not the shoulder strap side) If you look, it's definitely looking like S24 is picking up minor colour changes whereas the 15-Max is putting darkish colours over the greyish strands of the jacket (trying to explain it as best I can) I'm also curious about the GREY being more pronounced in the one shot too. I'm curious if you can take more pictures in different ways like light settings or zoom. I kinda wonder if like with taking photos in space and inserting colour changes based on rays or spectrum is if the iPhone is using it's facial recognition to enhance the quality but also negatively affects certain colours like black I would love to testing going forward as 1x 2x 3x etc going forward in comparison. Including the photo details for us so we know if we have a S24 it's better to use "these" zooms in "these" situations. What I mean is S23 is great in DAY at 1x to 10x however iPhone is better or the same only at 1x-2.9x then 5x-9.9x or whatever it is. A summary page of the collection of each would be WAY BETTER and HELPFUL imo then just straight up shots. Consistency in taking these shots between ALL BRANDS and all MODELS would be greatly appreciated I know it's asking a lot but if you could completely compare 5 generations of each BRAND it would be awesome. If you cannot do 5 maybe 4or3? Personally I don't think most of us do year over year upgrades. I currently own an S23 Ultra and I can confirm one thing about his low light images, he either captured it horribly or it's the pre release software's problem. Because my S23 Ultra does amazing in conditions with almost no light. For reference I have compared it with the 15 Pro Max, both are quite similar and in some cases the S23U performed better. But I appreciate the 15 Pro Max's default 24 MP, it's comes in handy. The 5x zoom performs good in well lit conditions and also captures some amazing portraits. But even if the light decreases slightly the camera struggles. Interested to check out how the S24 Ultra performs with it's 5x, it being a bigger and higher res sensor. When it comes to portraits, I have done a week long comparison with S23U and 15PM, I hands down prefer the Samsung but I liked the 5x potrait on the iPhone. The S24 Ultra also has a 24MP photo mode in it's Pro Mode, which I haven't seen anyone exactly testing. I also wish more Tech KZbinrs were aware of Samsung's Camera Assistant, it's a great tool. I can't wait to get my hands on the S24U soon, I won't be replacing my S23U but my mum might be getting a new phone.

Additional Info: The S23 Ultra had better dynamic range for photos on all the lenses (0.6x, 1x, 3x and 10x), so it's probably some pre release software issue with the S24 Ultra. I prefer it's processing to the iPhone 15PM in most cases. When it comes to videos, the iPhone does have better dynamic range, performs consistently and well in challenging conditions. But Samsung has made big improvements with video too, comparing my S23U with the Note 10 Plus and S22U. I would love some software improvement in terms of dynamic range in tougher conditions and better processing in low light video. The S24 Ultra based on it's leaks supposedly should make leaps in terms of video with the integration of AI. It's performance with pre release software looks promising. I expect better improvements with OS Updates. If Samsung pulls the strings right, it could create the closest video battle with the iPhone in the longest time. The battery has been great with the S23 Ultra for me, and even with the S23 my grandma has. Comparing it to the S22U, S22Plus and S22; they're leaps ahead. I feel Samsung also has better battery durability compared to the iPhone Pro Phones (13 & 14). My friends' battery life suffers within just one year of owning it and has a drastic decrease, hardly lasting a day. For me, the S23U has done well, I pre-ordered it and have been using it since Feb- 2023. Also in one of the portrait shots in the video, I think the iPhone cut off his ear which he didn't notice.

​@@bindu.rYou're right. Even from my experience S23u is better than S24u from this video. In this video S24u have some strange dynamic range issues and more. Not sure S22u had best portrait and edge detection seems like they didn't improve that much and Apple has taken the lead in detecting strands of hair. Maybe it's software but software shouldn't be an issue for a phone that's new. They should come out good enough and compelling for the people so people gets them.

Thank you for the review. Regarding night time video, the S24 ultra does appear to do better than the iPhone 15 pro max in typical settings e.g. indoor restaurant, outdoor in downtown with typical lighting. Shooting at night with street lights only, outside town centre, is not a typical use case. Perhaps change night time test venue for future reviews?

There's no need to delay stable sw since the same camera hw is already there for 1 year. Oh and BTW, s23u had barely improved cameras after a year of updates, photos are still oversharpened, overprocessed and overexposed.

So just to summarise, last year's iPhone won in the following areas ✅: - Better dynamic range in normal lighting for both front and back cameras. - Night mode see exactly what you're shooting in preview. - Sharper low light zoom - Better edge detection for portraits from both front and back cameras. - Better dynamic range on selfie videos and cinematic videos. - Edit cinematic video focus and blurs in post. - Continuous zoom whilst shooting cinematic video. - Sharper low light video. - Quicker auto focus in videos. - Better action/super steady mode. - ProRes video recording with Log. - Slow motion video with all cameras including UltraWide and Zoom cameras. Wow that's impressive for an old phone! I can't wait for this year's generation, it will be so competitive and go toe-to-toe with the Samsung for sure 🎉!

Honestly both phones have generally.solid cameras. I was expecting the S24U to blow the IP15PM out of the water but I can't say that it has done that. Which phone one chooses really depends of preferences and on what matters to you most in smartphone. I think that once Apple adds more customisation ability, it would be very hard to one phone is better than the other. I do prefer Samsung's customisation.

My guess for s24u being a bit worse than the s23u in dynamic range is because of faster stutter speed. Hopefully they fix it and try to get a balance of dynamic range and shutter speed

battery size wont change i think, there is not much space in phone to fit larger hardware. resolution wise may not change , 200 mp is already too high of a resolution, next step is probably building larger sensor so it captures more light. 1inch sensor hopefully comes with s25 ultra, probably more likely with s26

I am a Samsung Knight. However in terms of upgrade It's an incremental upgrade . Better AOD, Flat screen , 2600 nits, snapdragon gen 3. As an owner of the s23 Ultra, I'll wait for the z fold 6 and hope they use the best prototype designs and give it 100% to be as good or better than the Huawei mate x5 and Honor Magic V2 RSR Porsche edition as first large foldable w integrated s pen. This upgrade is only for those who have the s22 or s21 or older , if you have the s23 ultra I recommend waiting one more year. With that being said android offers more value like multi tasking , stylus pen w gestures, foldable innovation, advanced emulation no limitations etc. This is exactly why Samsung, Google, Huawei and Xiaomi , One plus and Red Magic and the entire android family will always be lightyears ahead of ios and why I will never return my main sim to ios ever again.

I did notice a bit of a magenta tinge in some of the S24 Ultra photos but I’m sure they will tweak the software in the coming months. I have been a Samsung user since the S3 to Note 10+ (now over four years) and love the S-pen. Android user all the way. Apple does amazing things seemingly a little better then Samsung with photography. Hopeful that Software improvements with Samsung S24 ultra and the like can only improve. Ordered 1 TB unlocked from Samsung USA direct.On the fence on color, black is okay, blue seems nice at first, but settled on grey as it over a medium yet rich look and hoping it won't be tiring or outdated boring in my taste. One thing to remember with all of these review videos is that the S24 ultra is not fully released yet and has not had time for software/ camera updates. The iPhone 15 has been out months at this point. I'd be interested to see another camera comparison after the s24 ultra has been out for a while.
