Hi Sam, I recently sold my P38 at 296,000 miles - missing the old girl.... Got to know the car fairly well! Before you disconnect or reconnect the battery, put the key fob key in the ignition switch first. I think this will stop the alarm going off or activating the EKA code etc. Just found your channel and enjoying the contents!

Hi, I do not envy you one bit, replacing the brake pipes. I was part of a 2 person prototype contract team, who designed the original pipes for Landrover and Rover. It was a challange to design the pipes by hand, on a bare shell and chassis. I worked for a company in Coventry, called BWL Component engineering. The last pre-production cars I worked on was the Rover P38 at Solihull and theMGF at Longbridge pre production facility (I think it was called the Round house).

Thanks for sharing, that's super interesting. I used to work in Coventry too - it really is the centre of the automotive industry in the UK! The brake lines weren't too bad of a job in the end - but as you saw, I added more joints than the original factory lines.
@simonlaxon9474

@@SamsMotors Its a small world. We were based in Stoke row but moved the brake pipe and prototype section down to the old Coventry Clinax factory, in Sandy lane. I think you did a great job with the pipes, especially knowing how much of a pain they were to originally create. Land Rover bosses decided that the didn't want multiple joints, as it could cause too many points for leakage to occur. I remember the 2 pipes that ran virtually the whole length of the the car, in an L shape. We originally bent all the pre production pipes by hand. They were then bent on a computer driven double headed bending machine, that our toolroom designed for production. I worked for the company from 1983 - 1994.

I'm currently changing the rubber hoses on mine (I thought it would be near certain they'd still be the original rubber ones so doing it as a precaution), luckily from removing the rear left arch liner to get to the upper hose I noticed the hard line had almost rotted through! I was also greeted with "my P38 hadn't had attention for some time and wouldn't start", though this was the fuel lift pump in the fuel tank. I have found most things are quite accessible on the P38 but that one rear brake pipe is well hidden.

I still remember the EKA code for my P38 4.6: 4L 1R 4L 1R! You probably know this but if the alarm annoys you too much you can enter the key code in the drivers door lock without opening the door! Before we moved to Kilkenny, every Christmas we'd drive here from London and my P38 became a running joke regarding which bit would break down on the visit (almost every damn year!) One year the EAS packed up and we were on bumpstops which was only compounded by the stupid 22" wheels and 295/35/22 tyres it was on. On Irish roads! Another year I noticed the rear brakes were losing performance and a local guy diagnosed rusted brake lines at the back as they were made from steel instead of copper, presumably as a bean-counters cost cutting measure (Don't know if it was LR or Bavarian Murder Weapons) and all we could do was clamp the NSR line with vice grips and limp all the way back to London with only 75% (ish) braking performance whilst regularly topping up the fluid level. Early morning start to return to London, topped up the reservoir and promptly lost the filler cap, it could not be found ANYWHERE! One Tayto crisp wrapper and a couple of elastic bands was all I had and that, along with around four litres of DOT3 and we eventually got home. My mechanic in London told me this was a common problem and an absolute pig of a job so all respect to you for doing it!

Nice to see some love and attention on the P38 Rangie again…. Now you have a new battery, keep it on a trickle charge, because they eat batteries for fun, if left alone for a long period of time, speaking as a long time owner of a P38. Good luck with it, as IMHO it is the best of all the Rangie variants, classy looking but not as corrosive as the original, but far better made than the later ones. ;-)

Sure enough as I was putting the securing airbag clips in place ( hadn't even touched the break line) the first drop of break fluid dripped onto my hands, lol.

Wow Sam am I glad I live in Aus and not where roads are salted!! Can't believe the amount of rust you have there. Seeing brakes and lines like that is unknown here, our biggest enemy is the sun killing paint and plastics. Amazes me as well that not one of the houses in your drone view has a garage as part of the house!! Don't think I can imagine houses built without that. Makes it hard to work on a car when yo are out in the elements all the time.

Freaking amazing work! Another amazing video. Pretty impressive the amount of little rust these cars have, it was nice when I bought mine this summer that it was one of the things you usually don't have to look for in the p38s, discos, disco 2s and classics it is always the first question. I just did brake calipers on mine and I probably should have rebuilt them but they were pretty cheap I just ended up replacing them.

We've had a few L322's over the years now, (1 x 2006 4.2SC, 1 x 2007 4.2SC, 1 x 2007 TDV8) and we currently have a 2012 TDV8 Autobiography and a 2012 5.0SC Autobiography, over the years we've also had approximately 9 P38's and currently have a 2002 4.6 Vogue SE. The quality of metal on the P38, the quality of the rust proofing, and the quality of the nuts and bolts used on the P38's was far superior to the L322. If you've got the right tools, you can almost always get the bolts out of the P38 whereas a lot of the smaller ones on the L322's sheer and need drilling out and retapping. The 322's are much nicer to drive but are definitely built cheaper then the P38's were!
