San Clemente MTB. Long ride on and long term review of my Trek Roscoe 8

50 years old, just started back riding. I used to road bike in my teens, then started mountain biking when I moved to Santee while going through training in San Diego. Kept mountain biking in Virginia, and even did a couple of races. Stopped riding in the late 90's. Just got my Roscoe 8 yesterday, and I've done two rides of about 5 miles each. Living in the New Orleans area, so the trails aren't too crazy, but my wrists and all is sore already just from that little bit of riding. I did add the Shimano clip/flat pedal combo to the bike. I used to always ride clipped in. Now days, I see a lot of videos with people just riding flat pedals with the spikes. Just seems like my feet slip doing that. Hope I get at least a little good at biking like I used to be.

Welcome back. I ride with people who swear by clipless. It's basically a personal preference. For putting in the miles, clipless is best for sure. I just hate them for slow tech. I did put clipless back on my XC bike

I just put a new Lyrik ultimate on mine and omg I underestimated how much of a difference it made. It's night and day unbelievable now. Just so smooth, quiet, and solid feeling. I love my roscoe 8. I don't think I'll ever be skilled enough to "need" a full suspension, i was keeping up with guys on full suspensions at northstar just fine on blues and blacks. Great for trail riding near me in the desert where a full suspension would take out all the excitement. 35mm stem and riser bars made a good difference too as I'm at the lower end of the height recommendation for the XL i have. Good vid.

Love your vids. I'm local in San Diego and have been wanting to check out San Clemente for some time, do you have a good loop/route that hits of all the main trails? I'm a decent rider so I can hit the blacks (still a novice at jumping though lol), also on an ebike so bad climbs aren't much of a concern. Thanks in advanced!

I have a few questions, When you go up on a steep hill, some people like to stand up while pedaling, and I am one of them. My bike right now shifts like crazy when I do that. Does your Roscoe do that? And also is it light? My bike right now weighs around 40-45 pounds and it's IMPOSSIBLE to climb hills.

I don't have any issues with shifting while standing. I just got done with a day of techy climbing, and it handled it well. The weight is just under 30 lbs.

@@outdoorsandiego thanks so much!! I've been looking for a new bike ever since I outgrew my 24" when I was around 10, my bike right now is 26" but came from a neighbor who wanted it to be scrap metal but I took it, I definitely need a new one now 😂

youtube.com/@joanna8347 A bike shifting alot on hills when you're really trying to pedal means one of two things. 1. You just need to adjust the rear derailleur a bit with the fine tuning adjuster that all bikes have on the cable for the shifter, as the rear derailleur is not quite in the center on some gears so it shifts when pushed. There are youtube videos to do this or it can be done in a bike shop in 10 minutes. 2. If the bike is older, the rear cassette or chain could be getting worn out so it's time for a new chain and rear cassette. I wouldn't expect this to happen until the bike has at least 4,000 miles on it.

@@fretlessed25 Oh okay, thanks!! I'm planning to buy a new bike soon anyway, my shifter is fully broken(the knobs completely came off and it's just a waste of money at this point to fix it because there's so many other issues) the pedals are coming off and the frame is rusting, it's just too much😂😂 I think it was a Walmart bike from the 1980-1990s and it's just not as good as it used to be, I picked my bike up from my neighbor that originally just wanted to scrap it so it's understandable to have issues😂😂😂
