Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, or save states
4. No movepool evasion-boosting moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- I make no attempt to have the exact same rule details between generations.
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- Evasion boosting is allowed if the move is not obtained from the Pokemon’s movepool. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed.
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1 & 4, banned in gen2, and allowed only to bypass terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- Items obtained with the ability Pickup can only be used if the starter obtained them
-- The footage is sped up & slowed down to match the pace of my narration
These Rule details apply only to generation 1:
-- All battle-mechanic glitches are allowed (glitches that occur outside of battle are banned)
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
If you didn’t read these rules and left a comment. Thanks for helping with the algorithm.

3:50 This got me thinking... Bite has changed what kind of damage category it is three times. It started Physical as a Normal type, then when it shifted to Dark it became Special. Then in the Physical/Special split, Bite once again became Physical. What a wild ride for that particular move!

I was so young when I played Red that I still remember how Bite of all things first made me aware of how impactful special/physical can be, when in Gen1, it suddenly enabled Rattata to do decent damage to rock types. Well, that and being neutral. It's such a random memory, but somehow it stuck.

It's just time. It takes a while for the count to build up and its still a relatively young channel in a fairly niche market. Mahdrybread and Jrose don't even have 500k yet and they've been accumulating for a while, it'll take some time before Scott catches up and then overtakes those two.

As someone who is in the probably small group of people who loves watching Pokemon and Dark Souls challenge runs, something I simply adore about the Souls community is that... well, it's a community. Of course some members are more prominent or well known than the others, but each person has their own style and flair and it's a lot of fun to see them come together for big projects or simply referencing each other in their videos. I cannot tell you how happy it makes me that the Pokemon challenge runners are starting to do the same thing. I genuinely hope there are more crossovers or synchronized releases in the future!

Backports are neat to watch, but I think they need their own tier-list. No matter how much effort/thought goes into to picking their move sets and stats they are invasive species. That would save you space on the list, but wont prevent comparisons to those on it.

Personally, with regards to mons like Slaking and Shedinja, I'd rather _not_ backport their abilities. For one I just think it's more consistent. Specifically because there are abilities that are signiatures of a Pokemon and were introduced _after_ the mon's debut. For example with abilities, Wobbuffet is most known for Shadow Tag, but debuted in Generation 2 before abilities were a thing. Similar story for Azumarill with Huge Power and Tyranitar with Sand Stream. If these Pokemon have to do Crystal without their beneficial abilities then I think it's only fair that Shedinja has to forego Wonder Guard for Gen 1 and 2 backports. The other thing is that I think it's just more fun. I've done a few backports in other franchises, and daydreamed about many many more, especially in Pokemon (maybe I'll get around to doing some myself some time). For me, part of the fun of backports is to throw something into an environment it was never designed for and may not have functionality for every feature. If that lack of support results in it being janky or overpowered or whatever, then, well, that's just part of the experience. The main draw of Slaking in Yellow or Crystal for me would be the question of "when put into an environment where abilities don't exist and normal types are monsters, how busted would Slaking be?" rather than "if GF had implemented Slaking back then, how good would it have been?" which I believe is more your mentality, at least from what I remember of the Heracross backport video. I couldn't find a good place to mention it, but I also wouldn't implement Shedinja's fixed 1 HP, and instead implement it like any other mon but with a base HP of 1. It'd still be very low hp (Level 5 with max DVs and 0 StatExp would have just 16 HP, Level 100 with max DVs and StatExp would have just 205 HP) but not instantly 1-shot by every move that connects. I figured this might be obvious given my perspective as described above, but I went to the effort of calculating what HP a mon with 1 in its base HP stat would have at various points and I'm not letting that go to waste lol. Ultimately you're the one going through the effort of backporting _and_ running them _and_ making the video about it, so you do what you want. I'll be watching regardless, I just had thoughts on the matter and wanted to write them down. I don't expect to change your mind (I'd be surprised if I did), but maybe you'd at least find it interesting to hear a different perspective.

I found your comment about how resets can make a route seem unrefined interesting; I've always looked at them as primarily a measure of variability. When I see a finish with a couple resets I think that this individual run got unlucky a couple times but was smooth. And when I see a result with higher reset counts I think that there might be some reliance on sleep powder, hypnosis, or opponent misses.

I think Sandile's black "glasses" are actually said to protect it from sand in some dex entries, so it being immune to Sandattack (probably via Keen Eye) wood actually make sense. I'm with MahDryBread on the backporting stuff. Gen1 mechanics are a unique kind of beast that makes playing it both fun and funny in unique ways. My favorite jank moments are the ones where a boosted sweep gets cut short because crits ignore damage boosts, making them an unintentional balancing risk factor to the normally completely onesided nature of boosting (and also making slower mons better at using those boosts, funnily enough)

This is a cool run and a good backport, though I wonder how well Sandile would've performed with its Spaceworld '97 type matchup (weak against Normal, only resistant to Psychic instead of fully immune) as the Spaceworld '97 type chart feels close to how Dark and Steel would've existed in Gen 1. Though my guess is it'd have a really rough matchup against Sandslash, and even Brock would be much more difficult in the early game.

Theoretically, you could keep Bite as Normal, but then add another move, internally different than Bite but whose display name is also just Bite, that is Dark instead of Normal, and that only Sandile learns. Then the opponents would still be identical, but Sandile would get Dark STAB. Maybe something to keep in mind for future backports.
