Sanditon's own heartthrob ranks the most iconic heartthrobs EVER from the period drama genre! This interview was conducted for BuzzFeed UK and published on 4 Sept 2023. This is the footage recorded for that interview. I do not own any of this material.

This made me laugh. Totally different order than I would have chosen. Colbourne is definitely in the top 5. And Ben, you are good looking enough to be a leading man.

Sanditon wasn't about sexy scenes. Ben and Rose's sex scenes were with there eyes and emotions. Ben is #1 as best leading man in.period dramas. Would want to see more of him and his craft

Yes, it is the character that one falls in love with. I enjoy watching the actors in different roles to see their marvelous acting ability. I did't think that I would enjoy Sanditon as much as I did. I loved it. I watched it because Kris Marshall was in it and found out that I love all of the actors.

I think, sir, you have elevated and cemented the dreamy role of Mr. Alexander Colbourne to that of another similarly dreamy, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy (Colin Firth). ❤ Great job on the role. Looking forward to more from BLH.

It's interesting that his searing eye gazes with Rose Williams were so key to the story, and that he rarely makes "eye contact" with the interviewer. I've noticed that lack of eye contact in a number of his virtual interviews. (Perhaps because doesn't want us all to swoon.) But any list that doesn't include Rufus Sewell from Victoria or Ciaran Hinds from Persuasion just doesn't cut it.

I think it's because with virtual interviews, he probably sees himself on the screen and doesn't want to look at himself, instead o f thinking of it as a camera where he looking at the audience. Hmm...

@@queenginafish perhaps, but he could turn off the self-view. It's weird because he seemed to enjoy the interview but his body language and lack of eye contact made it feel like he didn't want to be interviewed. I'm looking forward to seeing him as Alan Ginsburg! That will be a trip!

Funny he’s such a good actor that I thought he was much older, based on how he played Mr. Colbourne, but in this interview, he has a more youthful vibe and look.

I absolutely love Ben Lloyd-Hughes rationale for ranking period drama heartthrobs. He's correct in his assessment about gyms, workouts, and smoothies, etc. I thought Alexander Colbourne was in great shape, and it was probably because he was running his 'farm'--("he's a farmer, like me," comment to Charlotte as they sat in the anteroom while Samuel talked to Georgiana), and because his method of transportation was generally on horseback; walking his land would also have kept him in shape (they should not have cut the scene where he covers his land alone on foot). I'd never thought about these things prior to this interview. However, while I understand his loyalty to his brother, he's not No. 1, IMHO. I think he, Ben, could rank right up there. Also think Aiden Turner (Poldark) is absolutely No. 2 (or 1), Colin Firth No. 2 or 3, and I do think Theo James should have ranked at least at 4, although given the time he spent in the pubs with his friends, not sure how he had such a great physique...............And on a different note, agree with @piratefrenchey6222 that Ciaran Hinds should have been ranked, but did prefer Rupert Penry-Jones as Capt. Wentworth. He should have been ranked too, at least No. 5. Just my opinion, but fun to do.

BLHs reasons for moving Richard up are different from mine, but Richard is definitely near the top of all time period drama 'hunks'. Sam's omission of Ciaran Hinds (Persuasion) did not go unnoticed by me. Ciaran would be very near the top of the list. And what about Rufus Sewell in Victoria?!

haha Ben really hasn't watched much period drama but I prefer athletic men to muscular ones unless the part calls for an "action man" role so Colbourne would be high on my list

I’m guessing Matthew MacFadyen wasn’t on the list; Ben said he pushed for the scene where Colbourne is walking to Charlotte, like Darcy walked through the field to get to Lizzie in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice. I say BLH nailed that one! He’d be perfect as James Bond.
