PATREON of FutureAZA & Munro, I am. I hoped Sandy’s recent championing of the Sakuu battery would come up in this interview, but it’s still pretty hot news, and, as such will be an upcoming recurrent topic. For manufacturing technology, Sandy is an important leader and guiding light for me, and Brian, you educate me and keep me on my toes too. However, to the extent Sandy is championing the Sakuu Battery, I have a terrible stumble trying to understand how the Sakuu Battery handles HEAT! HEAT - I really need to understand how the Sakuu Metal Free Battery can handle HEAT! Generally metals conduct heat much faster and better than plastics. Is what’s not explained so far got to do with thermo-conductive plastics or ceramics? Moving heat around efficiently is something that has to be reckoned with. I hope it's not a show stopper for this new Sakuu battery technology. High rates of charge (short recharge times), and bat-out-of-hell FUN acceleration both bump up against battery heat issues. And just plain old keeping the battery temp happy regardless of what the weather's doing outside is important too. The lithium battery’s internal resistance (regardless of form factor) increases during both discharge and charge, and internal resistance & temperature increases faster with faster rates of charge or discharge. As battery internal resistance goes up its power handling capability (charge or discharge) is decreased. Controlling battery temperature is very important for battery power handling performance, and battery life. In general the lower a battery’s innate internal resistance characteristics the better its power handling capability. I’m not aware of any electric cars that don’t have an active battery thermal management system; most use liquid cooling, and - outside of the battery itself, regardless of liquid or air cooling, use aluminum material somewhere in the heat exchanger system. (Please educate me of any exceptions and facts.) The lithium 4680 form factor with very thin metal foils and tabless electrodes wrapped completely through the jellyroll, or even flat batteries with thin metal foil seem to have an advantage rapidly moving heat for thermal management. If you don’t have heat exchange material right up through the core or a battery cell, won’t you have the weight of heat exchanger material added back somewhere else adding back pack weight, or excepting lower power handling capability? Is there a way for Sakuu to get out of the lab? Some technologies will get out of the lab, Sakuu clearly looks promising to Sandy; I want to be able to see what Sandy sees? Please help me up from falling on my face - so far!

It was discussed in part one a few days ago, wasn't it?

Sakuu showed prismatic form factor similar size to 4680 cell. Will likely compete well with LG version of 4680 for heat dissipation.

I started off being TOTALLY UNIMPRESSED with Sandy in 2018. "Old" gearhead with a hatred for EVs and progress that wasn't ICE. And I was VERY wrong ... Really hoping Brian will get a chance to give a trustworthy opinion on the BYD Seagull when he is in Mexico. That looks to be the car the average "Gen Z" American needs.

What about repairs? Is there any chance to cut out damaged chunk of casting and splice / weld a replacement in? Right now EV's are getting the reputation of being "1-crash, throw it away". Part of the problem is simply mechanics are not familiar with them, so they refuse to work on them. Part of the problem is insurance company risk aversion, fear of the unknown when it comes to repairing EV's.
@FutureAzA4 ай бұрын
Sandy made a whole video debunking the notion. The castings are stronger than the stamped pieces they replaced. Any accident with sufficient force to damage a casting would have already totaled any other car on the road, regardless of the method of construction. With that said, you can absolutely weld a casting. If it's 50 years from now and your antique car is badly wrecked, yes, you can weld it.
