It's always fun when Sandy Munro is on. I liked his comment about being pro-capitalist and not liking industries organizing to keep competitors out. He's right that that's exactly what the auto dealers are doing. The people and states that are attacked for being "socialist" are more receptive to innovative competition and technology than the so-called "free market" people and states. The "free market" types are so busy desperately trying to preserve their existing positions in auto manufacturing, auto selling and servicing, and fossil fuel energy that they seem to care more about innovative ways to capture politicians and regulators than engage in real innovations with their products and services. A free market isn't about who has the lowest taxes. It's about who fosters innovation. That's why Silicon Valley is in California and not in Kansas. Look at who the top tech companies were 20 or 40 years ago. Only a few of them are still at the top now, replaced by companies that didn't even exist back then. Look at who the top auto and energy companies were 20 or 40 years ago. Except for some consolidation, we still have the same familiar faces. Those old industries are long overdue for disruption. They can't stop it forever.

I fucking hear you. AMERICAN LEGACY METHODS HAVE NOT CHANGED IN 95 YEARS. Alfred Sloan created the GM monster way back. The most models from the same parts bin for every customer’s wallet was the result for the Big Three. Spend millions on reskinning fashionable shapes from sheet steel, and reluctantly added decent bits and pieces as required, driven by sales and later from 1970s government safety and fuel consumption regulation. They are essentially still following standard practice, unable to drag themselves into the changing life. Time for the changing of the guard, methinks.

Frank Marcus on the other hand is making my brain hurt with the nonsense he is spilling. I have not heard him make a statement of any value during this show. Maybe he is out of his element because he does not believe in electric cars and Tesla in particular. Maybe he should learn from Sandy Munro: Don't talk about something you don't know about and be honest if you don't know. Maybe he should take a hint from one my professors in university who pounded the necessary humility into me by telling me to "think three times longer and talk three times less". Not only is Sandy Munroe VERY knowledgeable about what is going on in the automotive industry AND the world outside of the U.S., ie China and India, he has also shown himself to be a philosopher. His humour and voice impersonations are also enduring. Loved the part about rare earth minerals and the cactus in the U.S. Like Bjorn Nyland of Norway who tests all things about electric cars in the real world, Ie range, charging rates, coldgating, rapidgating, etc., there is another guy who conducts real world side by side testing of Solar Panels from various manufacturers. In spite of assertions by companies about the superiority and the highest efficiency & output of their panels, HIS testing revealed that the highest "real world" output was achieved by one of the lowest priced panels from, dah dah, INDIA. Both China and India graduate more honor students every year than the U.S. has students TOTAL. We ignore these people at our peril! Even in the U.S., look at the names of the brilliant engineers that crop up in the news these days (most of them unpronounceable). Not Bob Johnson nor John Smith, nor Billy Bob Jones. It's children of more recent immigrants who still have a work ethic that OUR European ancestors once had. Now, so many of those European descendants live off the inheritance of those hard working parents/grandparents in a state of entitlement and complaint.

In other words growing the scale and support infrastructure and product depth as they should be. They can stop doing that when they get where they are going, and then suck in those margins per produced product when they feel they are sufficiently scaled. Elon said prob hold off on new products after cybertruck. But there is still other parts of the company such as solar and battery packs, though soon this company will be showing them profits because after building out a plant in china for chinese market, plant in germany for europe; and just further advances in battery tech; adding no new vehicle lines; there shouldn't be any large capital outlays.

The real ENEMY is not Russia - it’s the power hungry Chinese. Sandy has an old- world perspective - the major car manufacturers have many competitive products in production lines and Tesla is JUST a small car company pandering to the young generation. Even if they produce 1 million vehicles per year - it’s a drop in the bucket. VW alone produces 6 million cars worldwide. Tesla makes great niche cars that are overpriced ( do I want to help the Chinese rob the USA) Not if I can help it - therefore I will now never buy a Tesla. Elon is a sellout - and just a greedy capitalist - nothing more - who cares about Mars anyway - it’s a desolate uninhabitable planet. All these billionaires ( Musk is only #192) don’t seem to keep married or keep a girlfriend. It’s just goes to show you - no money in the world can save the richest men on earth from extinction ... kind of funny. There's a point in this video where John McElroy talks about Tesla not making money on the cheapest models. And Sandy Munro kept quiet. This was despite, in earlier associations, telling McElroy that Tesla could easily be making profit on the cheapest models. That Tesla was way ahead of other manufacturers. McElroy was simply in Detroit suspicion speak mode and he didn't realise he was being seen through. Munro didn't cut across him because they are friends, I think. I expected a bit better from the programme host. Then again Autoline is, self professed, the voice of Detroit Automotive manufacturers. 47:40 A decade? He's years out. Maybe with Detroit. But the automotive world isn't Detroit. 5-6 years tops. Incidentally, McElroy is even wrong about battery breakthroughs. For example, there is one in SW England [Somerset or Gloucestershire, can't remember exactly] announced last year, that is receiving enormous interest and investment since a tiny, tiny announcement, but they had been as stealthy as Rivian were until their coming out. Last noises were proper production in 2-3 years. It may appear slightly sci-fi, but they are doing it, and so are others. There'll be no decade of waiting for batteries that will totally kill off the new ICE vehicle.

You still have to make a lot of cars in order to profit. Tesla isn't there yet; they still are turning out S, X, 3 with noticeable flaws that their service centers have to remediate. That doesn't cost the customer anything except time but it *does* cost the company money they can't afford to waste.

Well stated. And he seems to have no clue about TCO. The cost savings because of much lower maintenance costs and electricity vs fuel costs are huge and can easily exceed $ 10k over the lifespan of an EV. The tipping point already happened regarding luxury and middle class cars and is constantly reaching down in the mass market. A $ 35k Model 3 has to be compared to a $ 25k ICE car when looking at TCO. Regarding the question on the impact of electric cars on the grid: "Utility companies sell electricity. It’s what they do. The more they sell, the more revenue they get. And here’s a little known fact about utility companies. Because they are legal monopolies, they are guaranteed a stated rate of return on their investments. They get paid to spend money to upgrade the utility grid. How else do you explain why they are constantly pouring tens of billions of dollars into new generating plants and transmission lines? They love spending money because every dollar spent equals more money in their pocket. To put it simply, electric cars will take some of the enormous profits the fossil fuel companies have been making for the past 150 years and transfer them to utility companies. Fossil fuel companies may complain because they see dollar bills flying out of their wallets, but utility companies should be offering everyone incentives to buy electric cars. That’s what smart business people would do. In fact, Southern California Edison is doing precisely that at this very moment.” See cleantechnica.com/2018/02/25/electric-car-myth-buster-electrical-grid/. I pay just under $0.10/kWh to my electric utility CoServ (not counting the electricity I get from my solar panels). So I can go 320 miles for under $7.50. Plus I wake up every morning to a full tank. And when will the fossil fuel industry begin paying for all the environmental damage they inflict on us each day: www.ucsusa.org/clean-energy/coal-and-other-fossil-fuels/hidden-cost-of-fossils#.WOavFxjMwUF. And we’re spending a lot of taxpayer money subsidizing the fossil fuel industry: priceofoil.org/fossil-fuel-subsidies/.

I wonder if some of those parts that Sandy originally thought were over-engineered are because they were planning ahead for the model Y which will likely be a heavier vehicle, and is recorded to have a large percentage of its parts in common with the Tesla Model 3.

The 3 interviewers honestly displayed what is prevalent in the current auto industry-attachment to rumors, clinging on to the dysfunctional past and basic incomprehension. They listened but with their own prejudiced ears, if they had listened to Sandy for his words one would recognize the underlying message about the demise of the auto industry as we know it. Sandy's a business person, so he's selling something, but there are plenty of moments where he just continues to sound flabbergasted by the Tesla car technology and engineering superiority. All in all, Tesla is not only a few years a head-they are so far ahead that the only thing competition can try to do is to mimic or copy. That's why his reports are selling. But what they can't do is get the Tesla DNA, and that begins with Elon Musk.

Yes he is a traitor- no less greedy than the ICE Car Manufacturers - At least they admit it. There are at least 30 electric cars on the market now---- Tesla's stocks will plateau or head downwards-- no matter what the analysts pontificate on. Great car - crappy company - and a very Human and corruptible "Modern Day Howard Hughes" whose brilliance will be overshadowed by corrupt China dealings....

@marmoser75 жыл бұрын
@@andrasbiro3007 You like everyone are entitled to their narrow minded opinions - I have seen the entire show. I just don't buy into the religious cult following of "just a niche car manufacturer" - especially if they are building mega-factories in China instead of looking for incentives to promote the local economy and create more jobs. It is undisputed that Tesla has taken a leadership role in showing others a possible way forward- however the field will become very competitive in no time at all. Sadly the first innovators to market don't usually keep their dominant position long- they are either bought out or the other manufacturers just price them out of their own markets.
@andrasbiro30075 жыл бұрын
@@marmoser7 You are the narrow minded one. Do some actual research. 1. Tesla sold 250K cars in 2018, Toyota sold 10 million. 2. The Chinese factory is for the Chinese market. You can thank Trump's trade war for accelerating the project, the huge import fees made it unavoidable. 3. Tesla is building huge factories in the US too. 4. The federal EV incentive is being phase out for Tesla. 5. It's not Tesla's job to care about the local economy, it's job is to help stopping climate change. 6. If others beat Tesla, that's actually a victory. Tesla's goal never was being an industry giant, just to trigger a competition that accelerates the EV revolution. 7. But unfortunately it's barely working. Now finally there's some competition, but the global battery shortage is hurting everyone badly. Except Tesla of course, it has it's own huge battery factory. 8. Tesla is not just a car company. It also makes batteries and solar panels, and the leader in self-driving technology. Close to half million Tesla cars have the hardware for full self-driving, and that number is doubling every year. When the software is ready, Tesla will instantly have a huge fleet of autonomous cars.

András Bíró I knew all this and agree with you - I am not ignorant and have seen the entire show... It’s ok if we have different opinions - Whilst Musk might have good ideologies, the board and shareholders will dictate what works... It’s shortsighted to ignore your own economy in this equation and anti-American.When the big 3 get decent EV models and market penetration - Tesla will remain a niche player and or get bought out. The Tesla is just not that profitable - and they have invested large capital in setting up factories etc. Solid state batteries are the next battle - and Tesla does not lead this revolution.... According to Munro China will be the leaders and Tesla is helping them out...

Sandy, you can actually send data through power wires. You can even extend your home internet connection through your household electrical wiring through something called a powerline network adapter. I believe some of the electric car charging standards work through a similar process. Edit: just saw this was brought up by a viewer question they read.

Two points. We had rare earth element extraction in the US. The capital that owned those industries determined there wasn't enough profit in it, so they literally sold the machinery and the industry to Chinese interests who shipped it all to China. Cactuses had nothing to do with it. MBAs and greed did. Secondly, Tesla is eliminating rare earth from the motors.

I had seen an article on the web back when I was curious about investing in the rare earths; and it was saying most of the rare earths in use can be designed around or designed out if needed or if prices forced the issue; and that that would create a price cap on what price china could pressure us into paying. There was concern that like Sandy said China could just keep all rare earths to themselves and close out some of our tech field.

The western world is committed to moving to EV and phasing out ICE especially diesel. Some countries have aggressive timeframes others more generous but the writing is on the wall. Tesla is the major supplier of full EV outside of China. Who is going to make all the EVs needed to meet this demand outside of Tesla. Tesla is going to be huge within 10 years or less in my humble opinion.

@46:30 (edit: added time stamp that erked me) The host (aka or one of the panel members) is like the automakers, u can't wait for batteries to design themselves and for charging stations to build themselves, or for third parties to put these up to support a market the automakers are not supplying. They seem to think that someone should just go put 10 billion or 20 into these things on a whim, then tell the big automakers, ok, i've done all the heavy lifting for you, you can now produce electrics. Big auto need(s)(ed) to make electrics at a loss in order to create a research need in the battery field, and a battery car charging station need that they would also need to mainly build or build cooperatively with partners; but they couldn't or wouldn't do two things at once, and that two things is build a new electric market and continue to build on their old market. One of them could have created a more standalone company like and had them answerable to the board keep them under the umbrella, let them act like a loss making startup and even have its own branding. And costs come down not only with production volumes and enhancements but with the research that is being driven by that effort. They only made a couple to pretend to have an interest and to offset mileage ratings that needed to meet for government credit. Sandy understands this clearly, a couple of the panel members and ford/chevy seem to not understand this.
