I had an 1998 E39 Sports Package model. Stunning design. Almost bought an E36 M3 too. That era was the last authentic BMW DNA. The E46 was the last car to have it, after they hired that American designer, everything went down the toilet.

So many questions pop in my mind watching this: That giant hood and bloated exterior and barely room for 2 suitcases? Why does a brand new $104k car have terrible scratched black plastic B-pillars(I am not a Tesla fanboy, but glass looks better). No adjustable headrest? During a collision, shorter people are going to end up with that plastic/metal thing in the back of their scull. And I don’t care how expensive Alcantara is, all of that stuff looks like my grandmother’s 1980’s velour furniture.

Sandy needs to look up the patent on Tesla charging and it's pledge. There's many provisions that no company in their right mind would agree to, including access to unrelated patents. Last I checked, there was also no promise that Tesla won't apply licensing fees in the future. The government made the right decision as long as Tesla maintains these terms.

I did a test drive on the iX50 and Model X now has serious competition. These are high end cars that most people cannot afford but if BMW is able to get something of this quality closer to the Model Y and with the newer battery chemistry then they may have a chance to not go bankrupt. Amazing SUV. Still needs 6 seats.
@DaveTimperley
@DaveTimperley 2 жыл бұрын
I reckon it looks like every other SUV. I was watching the old Michael Douglas movie ‘the game’ last night and I remember commenting to my mate how much better the old Bimmers looked. There is a story that Audi did some market research and decided that folk thought that a tall grill was prestigious, which is why Audi grills began growing, and I would argue that they did a pretty good job with the styling. Years later it looks like BMW has taken note, but they just don’t seem to be able to get the hang of it. I was watching this video with my mate, and the first thing she said was that the grill looked cheap and painted on, just before Cory mentioned it in the video. I hate Merc EV grills for the same reason. And why do these high end euro mobiles have an interior that looks like a designer handbag? I'm stunned that Sandy is giving them 'a pass' on the frunck. First time I saw the Mazda Mx30, the bonnet was up, and the waste of space in there 'did my head in'. Totally lacking in 'effort made' and this bimmer is the same.

I like carbon, too, Sandy. I was delivering to CIT coating machines in Italy, Cytec, Torray and Mitsubishi. All these guys are right. It is not the solution to everything but for parts that need to hold something and connect and withstand forces in 3D it is fenomenal. In Leipzig I have seen the making of i3. They gained a lot knowledge there how to make it right. Unfortunately BMW didn’t believe in it and wasted so much time. Even today the cars are good cars to drive but the new ones are just medium to bad EVs… we Germans are too slow to adapt nowadays.

I got to drive a Tesla Model X this year and I was very underwhelmed. While the EV-aspects of the car were good, everything else that makes it a "car", wasn't. It didn't feel like a $100K car at all. Interior rattled, loads of tyre and wind noise, plastic, horribly stiff suspension. I didn't like it at all. BMW was trying to sell me an I8. There is more road noise in the i8 then my MX. I’m not sure what road tires were on the model X you drove, but some people do buy the wrong tires that creates road noise. You need to buy tires designed for the car. @@GET2222 It was an older MX, one of the first to come to Sweden. My old Volvo has a better audio system and less interior noise than that MX. Maybe the newer MX’s have gotten improved on the fit and finish? I’m not sure. That older one I drove also had problems with cooling fluid valves (which is why I had to drive it to the Tesla shop, which by the way was a 4h drive when other companies have dealerships nearby). It wouldn’t charge at a reasonable rate to prevent overheating because of these valves. Tesla charged $1000 to fix this. But yes, maybe that was a bad example, or they’re just not built for the nordic climate. We had door seals that broke and needed to be replaced, a door handle that broke, interior plastic parts that rattled like hell. It was not a good experience. I will keep an open mind nontheless and try out Teslas in the future, but my first experience with one wasn’t good. By the way, I’m not advocating for BMW here. @@tobias_dahlberg I get it. My BMW X5 M-Sport will be the last BMW I ever own. It’s been in the shop for 11 recalls. Recalls are normal for BMW, but the amount of time to schedule, drop off, loaner, pickup, transfer car seats, etc… bothered me, but not that much because I always like to look at the bright side of things. I used to think that regular maintenance was me being a good premium car owner. All that changed when I bought our MX. there is nothing to maintain. You just drive it. I live in Minnesota. I have driven it when it’s 37 degrees below zero where you can freeze and evaporate water by throwing it in the air before it hits the ground. Cold drains our battery, because it’s 2016 battery tech, but gasoline cars get worse mileage in cold too. I would never buy a used TESLA. Until battery technology can charge to 100% and it doesn’t degrade the battery when it is driven to 0%. I would not trust that the person who owned it before that they properly took care of the car. I don’t like buying other peoples problems. Tesla mobile service comes to my house and swaps out my seasonal tires for me for $75! With the crappy Falcon Wing doors chances are the Model X is gonna be in for repairs every couple of weeks, and the rest of the time they'd be stuck due to ice or rain would get in the car. Tesla makes great vehicles but the X is just an expensive and ugly piece of crap compared to their other cars. For the same money, get an S every day of the week...or a Performance Y and enjoy the leftover change.

It's one thing to be "purdy" and look luxurious, but let's hope it doesn't rapidgate and go into limp mode for 25 miles every time you fast charge it like it's little brother: the i4 M50. Lots of legacy manufacturers are great at making nice cars but not so good at the mechanicals and electronics that make an EV reliable and safe. People rave about certain models and they end up showing their warts eventually: battery recalls, contactors welding closed, rapidgate/overheating, cuts power after 5 seconds at full throttle, legacy infotainment lag, etc. etc.

Has carbon fiber (fibre?) manufacture been automated enough yet to compete on price against stamping or casting? From what I've seen, automated systems are glacially slow (as are hand built, but that's a lot of the problem) Especially if the weave is intended as a aesthetically pleasing surface element, great care needs to go into ensuring the weave pattern is straight and uniform.

About that CFRP part (and only because you devote 4 minutes to it): It's mostly a cosmetic cover put (not even glued) on top of the load bearing steel structure. You can find photos of the real thing cut up that clearly show this. Of course it will help in case of a side impact, mostly if it's a light one. There is a box section of about 2x3 inchches on the bottom end of the sill, that will take some punishment. But most conviently, you can just replace this part when it's cracked - just like any other plastic cover. The stuff is not woven either, it's pellets/flakes from recycled carbon fibre that has been injection molded. It's also kept matte, to make that fact less obvious. The superficial structure you see is mold texturing. I'm not mad about all of this, but what does grind my gears a little is that automakers try to sell this as sort of proof for technological excellence, or as a weight-saving measure. The iX weights 2.6 metric tonnes - empty. I guess it'd be even a tiny bit less without the CFRP cover. Loved the airy interior when I had a go in the iX, though. That is a trend that should catch on.

21:35 Kind of weird that Sandy seems to have so little understanding for the European Type 2 charging connector. It is made to be able to support both 1 and 3-phase AC up to 43kW(!). Also keep in mind that most Europeans has 3-phase AC at home. Tesla's US plug only supports 1-phase AC and has far lower power rating.

@@LambdaWave84 It still doesn't mean we shouldn't have a standard that supports future charging speeds as well. The e-tron and older Teslas supports 22kW and AFAIK the US Tesla plugs doesn't even support that on AC (and at least not 3-phase).
@koeniglicher
@koeniglicher 2 жыл бұрын
@@haraldk6828 US Tesla plug supports 240V times 80A, which is 19.2 kW and close enough to 22 kW. The 3 phase to 1 phase converter would have to be integrated into the wallbox charger. The benefit of 3x 32A over 1x 80 A is less lost energy on heat for power dissipation. The benefit of separate AC and DC pins at the connector with CCS is a clear separation of these power paths is better safety and not having to rely on additional contactors in the vehicle to route AC to the onboard charger and DC directly to the battery contactors.

@@BALANCEDPORTFOLIO Oh wow. In that case, every one should be forced to pay Tesla royalties for all of time and use their standard, rather than the freely available one which everyone else uses. Including Tesla, I may add. Just not in the US. Seriously, who is complaining about the charge cable, other than Sandy, who complains about everything that is not from Tesla? CCS is designed to handle up to 500 A and 920 V. Tesla's US plug cannot handle anywhere near that capacity of current. No one wants to guess if the charge station has the correct plug. That is why the EU forced everyone to use the same one. Everyone else in Europe is happy about it, even if Sandy will complain that it was not made by Tesla.

If done right, structures made of composites will save you time, money and complexity. On top of needing less material overall and being able to mold them in crazy shapes, another very strong point for composites in today's world with crazy energy prices is that they are much less energy intensive to sork with than metals and whatnots.
