Regarding a deeper appreciation of Bach, listening to many different versions (on diverse instruments) of the same pieces not only shows the multiple ways of approaching Bach but also will allow one to listener to personally envision his or her sound of the ideal Bach performance. Personally, I felt that Glen Gould perhaps may have ruined or spoiled me (that adamantine clarity and attention to the interplay of voices) regarding Bach on the guitar which, IMO, never came even close to as satisfying. Despite many great guitar players, the guitar has yet had a musician-intellect-performer figure comparable to Gould as far as Bach is concerned. But, over the years there have been some good applicants: a personal favorite (there are others) of mine has been Paul Galbraight (but I admit, he plays an all together different instrument with added resonance that really enhances Bach and immediately sets him apart from others). He brings together deep musical culture, intelligence, scholarship, originality (in sound, interpretation and technique) and great sensitivity. But now I will also propose a place in this stratosphere for Sanel on the traditional 6-string guitar (all of those above virtues apply likewise to him). His recent talk with Johannes Möller (also a superb musician and guitarist) on Guitar City Talks, describes his (Sanel’s) ongoing project of producing what I can only call Bach-on-guitar reference (rather than “definitive” since such a thing doesn’t exist) performances. Both Mr. Galbraight and Sanel are my benchmarks as far as Bach on the guitar goes, and they are second to none, past or present: both can stand alongside the most notable Bach performers on other instruments. The BWV995 here is exemplary in every aspect: tone, technique, overall conception, and as always, Mr. Redžić’s subtle and nuanced phrasing (here he seems to have very few peers). He has researched deeply (listen to the above talk) into the sources (Quantz, CPE Bach, etc.) of Baroque performance practices and while there can be no single best or right approach to Bach, I believe he makes a powerful statement in this performance of a much performed and recorded suite. It is precisely in the rich details (if you watch the subtle shifts in his right hand, you will say he how “sculpts” his musical phrases and paints his palette) that each Bach phrase receives that makes this a notable performance. Some may argue that he should use cross-string ornamentation (he knows how to do it as well as anyone, believe me), but I think this is his esthetic choice, perhaps more evocative of the cello. There is no rule for this either: his ornamentation here fits the music 100%, and perhaps cross-string trills may not sound quite in place for suits intended for the cello or violin. I don’t know. Finally, there is the question of absolute control of dynamics and coloring: what makes this rendition so good is that all the pieces really sound different but come together organically as a dance suite. So, we await more and more Bach from the hands of this stellar musician. It will also be interesting to see how he approaches some of the keyboard transcriptions. One feels that, as far as Bach is conscerned, Sanel can do just about anything and everything.

Errr... why no mordent on the very first note?
@worldsheaviestjamband9311 күн бұрын
It sounds to me like the performer decided to take a more relaxed approach for the introduction. Often people play that opening note/mordent as like a declaration of grandeur, which can be very effective but that’s not what this performer decided to convey. Honestly I liked this because it was different and let it build.
@loiseaunoir102111 күн бұрын
@@worldsheaviestjamband93 the mordent on the first note makes it sound "bigger" so to speak, and the rest of the introduction does not lack "pomp". Anyways, the first note is soon forgotten 😁 cheers!
