Interesting👌 Hope the Sangam age time frame is revised as Pre-Mauryan. Second urbanization could have started in TN along with gangetic plains. Recently excavated Porunai civilization (Pandyan kingdom) is dated to 1155BC( based on rice grain in an urn by Beta analytics, Florida). Adichanallur excavation is dated back to 850-600BC by carbon dating and Keezhadi-600BC. Also waiting for excavation reports from Porunthal, Kodumanal and marine excavation at Korkai.

Well researched presentation. The important thing here is the high level of development of Tamil language and literature as evidenced by the currently available Sangam literature which were written probably between 3rd century BCE and 1st century CE. It would have taken quite a long period for the language to reach this level of development. It’s evident from archeology and Sangam literature that Buddhist and Jain monks have already arrived in Tamilnadu during the last Sangam period. They must have been preceded by North Indian traders who would have come to Tamilnadu taking a sea route along the coast. Another interesting fact is that Buddhists and Jain priests in Tamilnadu wrote their religious philosophies in Tamil. In other parts of India these texts were written in Brahmi. Post Sangam literature and Tamil epics were written by Buddhist monks and Jain monks and traders during the period between 1st century CE and 5th century CE.

But chola conquered upto odisha ..called kalingam...it is true they never established kingdom beyond ganges...but there were numerous sangam poetic reference that these three kings often visited to Himalayas...the abode of shiva as these kings were pure shaivates,sangam conference was headed by Shiva himself..
@libshastra
@libshastra 2 жыл бұрын
It is interesting to see that kings of the Sangam period styled themselves as the king of the land between the Himalayas and the Sea. It shows that the idea of India subconsciously existed despite strong local culture. There's some evidence that says proto Tamil and IVC script might be related. Could the title of the king be considered as an indicator or is it just mere speculation?
@JayVardhanSingh

The existence of large number of towns. By towns here we mean that settlements where the majority population wasn't engaged in agriculture. The towns should be numerous and we should also find evidence of large scale public works. The existence of standard weights and measures can also be included.

You are true brother. There are stories in Odisha, that during Kalingan era from 3000 years ago that merchants (Sadhabas) from Kalinga country sails through Kalinga Sagar which was also known as Mahodadhi ( present name Bay of bengal) to Srilanka and then to South East Asia as well as Maldives and to Mauritius too and also trades with Pandya country too. There is a annual celebration of Bali Jatra that marks the old tradition of voyage to Bali of Sumatra islands and that voyages happen first to Srilanka by using Canvas Boitas ( ships) using wind direction which usually happen during start of winter ( North East monsoon Winds) and after reaching the South of Srilanka they usually travells easily through Equatorial currents towards South East Asia as well as towards Maldives and Madagascar Mauritius region. This is usually trade happens depending upon panchang and muhuurats (Astrological events which helps to sail along waves which also involves direction of countries depending upon planets and stars). One request brother kindly cover one episode on the ancient merchant tradition and culture of Kalinga.

Very informative. Anything in the Sangam literature which could suggest being a memory of the Indus civilization? In the three Sangam ages, as you mentioned, the first one was submerged in water. On the other hand, we know the Dholavira site which was submerged in water. Could there be a connection?
@JayVardhanSingh

Thank you. I don't think so. Firstly I don't believe that there was a large scale migration of people of Indus Valley Civilization to the South. Secondly, archaeologists have found some structure underwater on the Southern shore. So it could be the case that these remains were part of settlements that submerged into the sea and later their memory survived in Tamil legends.
