Love the Neumann NDH20s. I've had to use monitors less, especially at night and went from entry level Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro to the Neumanns. Wow. Speaking on sound only, they are pretty damn awesome. While I haven't compared them to high end headphones like Audeze LCD or Focal, I can say that give a truer representation to almost anything when used with high quality audio input. I'm running everything through my UA Apollo X8, and this combination is fantastic. Mixes sound better than before and even streaming or loading up a blu-ray sounds so much better. For the price, they're definitely worth it. There are some drawbacks for those who are looking for a more complete review. My main complaint is the headband which feels like the shape is too wide to sit snugly on top of the head. They tend to slide a bit if you nod your head forcefully (e.g. along with a good beat). And when bending over, they slide off. They fit snugly over the ears and do not pose an issue when just sitting and working. They feel pretty tight over the ear actually. All in all I love them and am looking to get the LCD-X or HEDDphone to find the best headphone mixing solution for my needs.
@劉仲齊 Жыл бұрын
Would like to know if you found your best headphones for mixing Been considering getting a pair of ndh20 for a while, since I don’t own speakers for now, I might rely heavily on headphones for a while, and if there are headphones that sound as good as speakers, I’ll take it
@neonether Жыл бұрын
@@劉仲齊 Follow Up Mar 1, 2023: I’ve now owned the Audeze LCD-X and LCD MX-4. Both handle mixing incredibly well. The MX-4 is considerably more expensive but also sounds incredibly good and flatter than the LCD-X. With the LCD-X you get great open-back sound with a bit brighter profile compared to the MX-4. Overall, it’s a judgement call if you think the MX4 are $2000 “better”. In the end I went with the MX-4, and I don’t regret it. But I also would be able to do well with the LCD-X. Like anything, you just need to listen to everything with the headphones so you know what certain records sound like as a reference. Then you’ll be able to mix your sound closer to what sounds right to you. It’s not a replacement for a fine pair of monitors, but it will definitely serve you well for hearing a mix with more detail and less weird spots in response compared to a Neuman ndh20 or comparably priced headphone. I’ve kept the MX4 and I can mix just as well if not better than with my high end monitors (dynaudio core 47) depending on the situation.
@almur88 Жыл бұрын
Got mine today. The sound is punchy, thick, detailed, not brittle, mids are incredible but the band is hurting the top of my head pushing hard. I will have to think about some foam to wrap around otherwise my time limit is less than 30 minutes wearing them😢
@neonether Жыл бұрын
@@almur88 Unfortunately that’s usually what varies the most. For me, I can sleep in those when I need to block out ambient sound, and its the more expensive mx4s that hurt my ears after a little while. But there are now other headphones in this price range that can be tried, hopefully we don’t all have to suffer for the sound!

Big fan of Beyerdynamic here. I was using the DT 880's for a long time but I recently made the switch to the DT 1770's. You do sacrifice a tiny amount of comfort and sound quality compared to the 1990's, but if you need the extra sound isolation they're a great choice. With the 1770's, I can focus on producing even when my spouse is in the other room watching TV or talking on the phone.

The Sennheiser hd600s are amazing for the price. And build quality is excellent. I think Sanjay way underestimated them. I had a pair of Sennheiser hd580s for 15 years and they were great. Finally decided I needed new cans and picked uo the hd600 for mixing and the hd280s for jamming. And of course the Beyer dynamics make the highs pop out more. The range goes to 40khz on the top end. But that isn't always the best for mixing. For mixing in cans you want a flat response. If you are listening for enjoyment and have the cash, get the 1990s, but for mixing get the hd600s.

The “clarity” in the beyerdynamics are due to the boost in the high mids and lows as shown in the frequency response charts. That’s why the hi hats are also piercing which is the trade off. Which also makes it awesome for listening to music. Mixing maybe not so much. On point with the slate built quality being the downside. Could’ve been better. That being said, not having to buy multiple headphones and speakers is cheaper in the long run. Not to mention not going to the car to check mixes comes a long way. Eliminating a lot of guess work and switching headsets to check. plus slate always adds to their emulations. If it can sound like multiple things and is extremely close to what it’s emulating, I think decent is an understatement. There’s a reason it’s sold out right now.

i think Shure SRH1840 blows the other phones into the water, Shure is the most respected sound brand in the world, they have done magical stuff, as unkillable legendary mics, that survived insane durabillity tests, to the best in-ear phone in the world for it`s money, i highly doubt, that Beyerdynamic with its INSANELY high treble peak on chart, beat Shure SRH1840 with it`s increadibly almost flat frequency chart.. beyerdynamic is over hyped by people who think "extreme highs" are flat but don`t really know about mixing, DT1990 is far from flat, it has even higher treble peak than the cheap Audio technnica m50x :)) i understand why your favorite was Shure ^^

You were right about your review regarding the 600’s. Remember though that midrange is key in having a good mix to translate on different devices. The midrange is most important element. With a few tweaks on lows and highs. Do the VSX have emulation of 600’s in them curious on that.

How do you like the 1540s? And why do you like them more then the hd800s?
@manueljenkin952 жыл бұрын
@@thunderstar254 My opinion hasn’t changed much. I still prefer it over every other headphone I’ve tried, with the exception of srh940 which I like more. They need significant amping headroom (lots of current, 2w into 32 ohms if possible) to get their full dynamics, but can also be used with a phone if you’re okay with a softer and less dynamic sound. Just to note: the headphone I own is hd800 (hd800s is a different headphone that I have also heard and it’s quite similar to hd800) Why I like them more than hd800? I think srh1540 sound closer to what I’d feel if I were at the position of the mic. It makes things sound “real” and personal as if I’m with the singer. Much easier to follow and appreciate the micro tonal variations in the singer and instrumentalists. Hd800 is no slouch either but I often feel like female falsettos and high pitched voices donot have the same sense of energy or realism as I feel out of srh1540. The one area I prefer hd800 over the shures is bass. I think the bass on hd800 is some of the most incredible I’ve heard in terms of hearing the subtle gradations in bass notes with almost a physical feel.

For price under 1k, beyer dt 1990 is the best studio headphone I have ever heard. It is a significant step up from dt990. But if your buget is more than 1k, try focal clear pro. It is my current studio headphone, It is also a huge step up from beyer 1990. The clarity is even better and not piercing like dt 1990. To me, a little better than sennheiser hd 800s. HD800 is a little too analytical to me. If you have even more, try focal utopia, hifiman he1000se, abyss diana phi. Once heard, never go back. Once passed 1k, although different reference headphone still have its own sound characteristic, the difference is not so much and they can be used for both music enjoyment and in the studio.

I think the NDH20 is better for balancing a mix. I say that because it is never harsh in any frequency. The Beyers are harsh on the highs which doesn't give you a truly flat response which is what you want. The Beyers are better for placing your sound in a stereo field - because of the clarity. I hope that helps you.

@@SanjayC It really did, thank you. I understand the biggest difference between the two now.

Hello Sanjay! Need more help. I got Aston Spirit mic. Yamaha hs5s. Krk 10s sub. Aston reflection filter. Silver cable for mic to interface. Im heavily leaning towards the apollo solo but concerned with workflow. Would you recommend I go with Apple (thunderbolt) or PC (usb) ? Or would you think some other interface is better for my setup? Also, im into Hip Hop so whats the best DAW to work with for recording and or producing in your opinion?? Thanks Man

Hi, guess this is coming late, but I think you should try studio one artist. If you want to master your tracks too, you can try studio one precessional

What are your thoughts about the new Adam Audio Studio Pro SP-5 headphones? How do they compare to the top 5 premium headphones?

Hi, SAnjay C ...did you hear bowers &wilkins PX7, how is it ?can it use for recording or doing remix , like neumann

Got the 1990. But honestly I long for the shure 1840. They seem flat as fkk. I use sonarworks anyways but a more natural flat sound must be much better for sound design.

Hey Sanjay, thanks for this video. Have you taken a listen to the newest Neumann NDH30s yet? Curious your thoughts on them and if they are an improvement!

@@SanjayC Thanks for the response! Hope you do soon - they sound promising - but they haven't released a freq response chart yet to show how 'neutral' they really are!

Would i be fine as an mixing amateur with the DT 990 or Sennheiser HD650 + Sonarworks and room emulation?

Hello Sanjay. I am just getting into recording. I have Logic, MacBook Pro, Focusrite 4i4. I also use a AX8 Fractal for guitar modeling. I do not have studio monitors yet but will get as I am slowing adding peripherals step by step. I don't want to buy 2 headphones one for mixing vs recording (open back vs closed back headphones as I understand). Price range 100-400 possibly more. I played studio monitors Yamaha HS8 which sounded great. I am thinking doing recording without bothering neighbors at night at first. Someone suggested Blue MoFi which someone suggested? What would you recommend for me? The one you recommended at end of YT clip seems to be open back.

@@SanjayC I don't think I would. I bought the Townsend Labs Microphone which models and was super worth it. But as for headphones I been using the Shure SE215'S and got the Sennheiser 280 pros which are running on empty. I think Imma snag the shures on this video! Great reviews as always bro. You crush it.

I really want to buy 1770 PRO, but the price is just way to high, tho I might go for 700 PRO X , is there any huge difference in sound quality ? I am that type of a person who likes detailed music with good bass on top of that :)

Your videos are great! To record voiceovers in my studio, be it for professional voiceovers for documentaries and commercials; that is to say "to place-modulate the voice in its right tone" do you recommend the Neumann NDH 20 or the Beyerdynamic DT-1770 Pro? Thank you
