I feel so bad for him, I know it was done so he could fight on the same level as Luffy and Zoro, but it's devastating to have something so traumatic consume you like that. *spoiler?* Luffy and Zoro both had a similar awaking during all of this as well, with gear 5th and Zoro's conquerors haki awakening, but Sanji's is the only one that feels Luke it took something from them. Luffy loves 5th gear, and Zoro may not even entirely be aware of his CH, but Sanji knows what's happening and it's causing a trauma spiral that the last thing his mother did to save him, still ended up not working in the long run

​@@thomasshepherd8909 both luffy and zoro did have foreshadowing but sanjis had a very nice build up, he relied on Germa's technology (the raid suit) and as a consequence he nearly lost himself If he wore it one more time he may have lost all emotion and became a "germa solider" for luffy to use, but this isn't what either of them would have wanted Luffy has had foreshadowing throughout all of one piece, one of my fav bits of foreshadowing is in WCI Where nami comments on how fast he was loosing weight, this is because luffy himself believed he burned through that many calories (or atleast thats what i think) Same with him being able to regrow his teeth by drinking milk. In Skypia there was some famous foreshadowing of Joyboy, and the entiere concept of the gears may have been because of the technicality's of his fruit (thats how he believed physics works) As for zoro, its a lot more subtle but there are some moments that almost foreshadow Conquerors haki, a theory i heard was the cursed sword he used could have been intimidated through haki (since swords have "personalitys" in one piece) He commented on Luffy's haki once saying (i think) he would need to "atleast have that" when conq haki was brought up When luffy and Zoro fought there was sparks in the air for a moment (the beggining of a Conquerors clash) And i think there were some more but they are the main ones i could think of And for luffy theres tons of stuff about possible foreshadowing Or atleast thats what i think atleast ^^

While it is horrifying, you have to look back on the previous arcs and realize that Sanji was a beast on his own level and he just never found out. Pre-timeskip, Luffy doesn't really train thanks to his devil fruit and Zoro is usually found training and honing his swordsmanship. Meanwhile Sanji is busy cooking for the rest of the Straw Hats. Essentially, Sanji was already a gifted and powerful individual. He just never made it his priority over his love of cooking.

I'm still in the Punk Hazard Arc as I'm watching it on my own speed (Toonami style) but after reading some of the comments below by *rioatlas8209* saying he has 3 siblings based off those boys that have Red, Blue, & Green hairstyles, it's so heartbreaking to see how Sanji practically reaches his full potential at this point by having ptsd as a superpower! It seems every Strawhat has a traumatic childhood which really makes me adore this anime A TON coming from someone that had a traumatic childhood themselves and being a r*** victim myself. Sanji hasn't been my most-favorite Strawhat as it's mainly Brooke & Chopper in a way but totally am curious and yet, looking forward to reaching Wano to hear Sanji's past as him battling that robotic dragon must've taken a toll on his health & physical strength! Quite shocking how Sanji is one of the STRONGEST human fighters of the Strawhats beside Zoro that doesn't have a Devil Fruit Power as he has came so far on where he's at today when I first seen him in the beginning of East Blue!

I mean sanji’s first major fight scene had him fighting with broken ribs…… while continuing to break his ribs. Reminder: Sanji’s enhancements did not begin to awaken until he put on his Raid Suit for the first time. Every subsequent time he used the Raid Suit, the awakening progressed, until he was completely capable of using his latent enhancements. Before that, he may as well have not had them at all.

This man didnt use armament on the 2nd commander of a yonko whether queen used haki or not his strength is ridiculous . Sanji raid suit also took a direct hit from king and he was unscathed before he had the exoskeleton body. And his raid suit has a shield cape while sanji hinself has armament to be used. His durability is out of this world and is definitely up their with the defensive monsters in the show.

@@aceclover758 he does use haki but not when queen hit him with that sword because he didnt even know he was gonna get cut he was in shock with his entire defence down or else he would have dodged like he normally does.

Of course that Germa suit came with a terrible cost. It altered him, forcing the changes his mother poisoned herself to prevent him from getting. No wonder he was scared of losing his emotions, and no wonder he destroyed that germa suit. No sense risking whatever other changes that thing had in store. I'm not sure what people were expecting for his "transformation" here. It was unwanted and forced on him by that germa suit screwing with his DNA. For some reason, his father opted to use his sister's version of the alterations though, since he kept his emotions. Or maybe I'm assuming too much of such a terrible man, and he simply avoided that mental change by destroying the suit when he did.

I was really bitter about his power up too. I am aware that Oda is not kind of writer, obsessed with power rating of his characters, thanks to couple of his answer about power scaling questions. But if you look at this with wider angle things little bit more clearer about Sanji's power up. -Oda clearly didn't give any other Strawhat Crew CH. Like Kaido said after Zoro uses his CH, too much CH users around, this was probably from direct message from Oda. But this will also affects the power dynamics of the crew. Luffy is strongest by large margin. Then always Zoro and Sanji. "Monster Trio" then other crew members. Robin, Franky, Brook. etc. At the end Sanji needed a power up other than CH and arguably he got a DF level of power up without actually eating one. -Another one is Oda's storytelling style and "divine" theme within crew. Luffy is a God, Zoro is a Devil, Sanji is a Fallen Angel. He ripped his wings and chose his own way, now his wings grew again but this time nobody controling him. As we can see in the next episodes he chooses his real family: Zeff and StrawHat Crew and broke his shackles. Storytelling perspective and as a person who loves all Strawhat Crew equally this is really heartwarming. I was really worried about this power up too, gave almost exact reaction as Sanji, but, later episodes everything became crystal clear, for me at least :). That being said I still believe Nami got the best power up alongside with Luffy.

his germa powers awakened back in the east blue when Pearl and Gin absolutely clobbered the hell out of him, then he immediately went on to Arlong Park and got handled by Kuroobi underwater. Pearl honestly could've shattered his skull, then Gin broke some of his ribs. Then Kuroobi destroyed his lungs by forcing him to experience rapid changes in water pressure. And that's within the same month at least; could even have been within a few days of each other.

I love how strong Sanji is, and yet he doesn't even have a devil fruit. Imagine how strong he would be if he ate one. Which I don't think I'd want him to. Since I like seeing him being the one to save the drown and also be able to swim. But I have to wonder. What if you had a devil fruit that was a Sea monster or like revolving water... XD How would that work. Like say their was a merman devil fruit. How would you use it, if your weakness is the sea.

Excellent explanation of why Sanji didn't want to wake up his cyborg enhancements, as he feared that he would become morally and emotionally deprived of anything including his own happiness, and be merciless like his siblings (his sister may be a notable difference just like him, they apparently are the only ones who have emotions). He seems to be a lot less happy now that he knew he has done something he regrets, at least he's not gonna be six feet underground anytime soon because of that cybernetic modifications. Still, when he fights, he's insane, especially being powerful enough to finish off stronger enemies, like Queen.
