I built the original Santa Ana for a customer 9 years ago and just finished building this new edition for another person some days ago. In my opinion the main problem the original kit had was the completely out of scale cannons and this has been solved. Adding the carronades to make a Trafalgar version was a nice touch. The neverending wooden / painted finish discussion is a matter of preference. They just made a Trafalgar version of the kit and suggest painting it, it would be stupid to increase the price adding hardwoods to paint them.

Hello John the old Santa Ana looks absolutely amazing the quality of the wood is excellent. The new one is plywood, not solid wood and there is lots of paint. A wooden is made of wood not covered in paint. Keep it up I really enjoy your videos.

Hi Sam! That 's what i believe. I want a wooden model, not a painted one. It is good to have some paint but not the entire model. Otherwise i get a plastic one and paint it.

Gran vídeo Juan, tú hiciste el Santa Ana con una buena calidad en la madera hay que decir también que el precio no era nada económico y muchos no lo compraron, tú lo hiciste y fue una obra maestra, para mí es mi barco favorito. Hoy la calidad en madera es inferior pero tiene su lógica desde el punto de vista de un fabricante, él Santa Ana de hoy con más detalles en los acabados siendo más fiel al original es y será un gran barco, espero que algún día puedas compararlos, un saludo Juan y cuídense 🇪🇸

Over 1.2 million people have watched the Making Of Santa Ana, and many heard me say that she is the best model i ever made. I wanted to make clear that the new one has nothing to do with the old one. John, I agree whole heartedly with your assessment of the reissued Santa Ana. These ships look so much better in the natural wood look. Too bad we will all have to settle for more paint and less natural wood finish on the Santa Ana. I'm glad you were able to build and share your build from the original released version which is an absolute stunning looking model of the Santa Ana. I wish I had your skill and patience to build this kit as I love the Santa Ana. I was very excited when AL said they would be reissueing the kit, but, not sure now if I will ever purchase one after seeing your review.. Thanks for your professional comparison review. 👍

Thank you very much Alan! The original was one of the best model ever made and Artesania showed that can do it. The new version just looks like the old one. From not having it at all it is better to have it even in that but people should know that has nothing to do with the original.

I think the point of this video is how the quality from the old company is so much be/er than the new company. I would have to agree with John on this. The wood choice and the metal that are used in the new old is not that great for the amount of money they are charging. The new company is trying to live off the old reputation. They should and could have done better!

Off course I agree that the old one looks way better, but you can’t get the old one anymore. So why paint a bleak picture? There’s really no contest. And as I said, if the video is about the pricing it makes more sense to me, but this is not the case there’s no mention of price, just boasting.

I ready enjoy to build old model kit because the old model less use the photo edges and difference size and types of wood to get better looking. We do respect the company trying to stay alive in nowadays. Anyway, two direction to do this, one way is lower the quality of the material, and the other way to update the details, then higher the price, it may get more followers in the future. Hi John. Question… the Santa Ana?? Size and width leangth wise. How does the deck compare most too? Montanes or Santisma??

Santa Ana is around 1.20 in length 90 cm height and 48 or 44 cm wide, around the same is Montanes and a few centimeters smaller is Santisima. But Santa Ana has a very big angle to the bowsprit, so it the bowsprit was in normal angle she should be around 1.35 in length.

I was wondering John how long it would be before you compared the new Santa Ana to the original one you built before !! When I saw Artesania Latina's announcement and images, I knew right away that they have lowered the quality of the parts likely for economic reasons. I think it is OK to not have brass cannons, but that they should not have compromised on the wood quality (for 'only' another $100 or so) given that it is likely that expert and/or older builders will be the ones who will have the money and who mostly want the kit.

This is not a beginners model, the price range and also the difficulty of this model is for experienced only. If you have experience you want something more, you want quality and detail. The detail is something that the kit has, the quality of the old one was far better than this.

Quality aside I like how it looks. I paint all my models as historically accurate as possible even if they come with nice wood. It's just what I like. I hope it comes with paper plans, I absolutely hate having plans on a laptop and for whatever it'll cost I want my paper. I wish model companies would go more towards historical accuracy. There are thousands of plans of gorgeous ships in the archives, why not make them instead of all these innacurate models that are meant to look nice but don't even have the same number of guns as the original or the same lines. I get it if it's an old galleon but we have detailed blueprints of thousands of ships. So I like the recent move to more accurate looking ships. I can't speak the quality of the wood. All I know is I bought AL rigging blocks to properly rig the cannons on my Diana and they are not good quality. The hole is not consistent so I have to drill it out and often the block splits in two. Lot of work for the 140 blocks been rigging for a week hehe. I like what they did with Soleil Royale, it actually looks like the real ship, not the Corel fantasy ship. But digital plans yuck. For 1k € I want paper.

Some people like the painted wood, nothing wrong with that, i like the plain wood, i love the color with the varnish, so the new Santa Ana is not my thing. About the paper instructions i totally agree with you.

Make a 100 eur upgrade on the wood and you’ll get exactly the same ship. Long story short, it is one hundred more expansive than the old one, for people who want it that way it is a pretty good deal. What Artesania is doing it is wrong obviously…

Hi John, i didnt said its simple, i just said with a little interest and knowledge you can obtain the exactly same model like the old one. At least you have the options now. You ve said it was one on sale for 50.000. Lets say you invest 400 on wood and is still a long way to 50.000. I will buy it and i will choose the old style, it would be great to be 2 options, one more expansive to save you for trouble and looking for extra wood and the one presented. I could say some things on Artesania favor if i think about it. Its imposible for them to sell this model at the same price with the same materials like they did many years a go, things changed about money. Also, i guess they are some people who like the new look and colour scheme, for them it is really a win. Good luck on Candelaria, looking forward to see how it looks!

Today I received the new Santa Ana. I really wanted to make this ship. False keel and frames, 4mm plywood. Some 0.4mm sapele sheets to line the hull. The rest birch wood and plywood. The longerst strip 300mm. Cannons, figurehead and others in die cast. Little brass. To get a decent model you have to paint it. No paper plans. The auctionnof the sails, ugly. Total disappointmen. I edit because my comment seemsnnegative, but it is because in the case of Artesanía Latina I expected someting else, and this model is highly desired by me. In short, grateful to Artesania Latina for having reissued this model. I will do it with great enthusiasm, of course, making my own improvements.

Hey John , I’m afraid walnut is now in short supply and even illegal in a lot of country’s , western country’s at that so artesania has to make do with what they can to keep our hobby alive , if they didn’t I’m quite sure other makers ie mantua , Occre are all in the same dilemma as to wood supplies , there was an edict passed 10 yrs ago that certain trees that take a long time to mature for harvest were no longer legal to do so , walnut , cedar , ebony , rosewood are all on that decree among other obscure trees . So sorry to say it John but as a wood modeller of your stature should really be up to date with todays wood supplies 💁

The old one was 730 back on 2013. The new one is 680, if the quality was the same i believe the price would have been over 1000.

Hello John. I watch your videos with interest, your dog has aged. I think Artesina Latina was good company. But time is running out and Chinese competitors are stepping on the heels, and their prices are often lower than those of famous firms and companies. Apparently that’s why Artesiana Latina took such a step to reduce the cost of its products. But still, the “Santa Anna” model is not a cheap set, and you are right, the set needs to have high-quality wood. And those who want to paint a lot can switch to plastic ships.

Hi Vasili! I agree with you. Artesania was a company that produced very good quality kits. They had to deal with competition and they have lowered their quality a lot. The new kits are very bad compare to the old ones and the price of the new Santa Ana is very high for what they offer.

I don't understand this channel much anymore and I've been watching it for a long time. When you opened HMS endeavour you said that everything from Artesania Latina is great, and now exactly the same thing in Santa Ana is bad because you have to paint it and is low quality ? hopocrisy

Glad to see a content producer speak truth. The company changed. And truth was spoken. Artisana Latina has let us down. I know first hand Santa Ana is garbage. He said endeavor is good. Both hugs can be true yeah? Original Santa Ana was amazing. Facts were shared and the people that took over artisana Latina are stealing the old designs to sell garbage. Was so excited for the reissue. Waited forever. Sadly it is no way near its old glory. I can manage the lack of paper instructions but… All the beautiful wood has been removed and replaced with all basswood. The instructions read “for the environment” and “you can just dye it and make it look like the original exotic woods” it’s a shame. There are sapelli 0.5mm strips for the second hull covering otherwise the entire model is a boring sea of cheap white wood. Too bad. I understand artisana Latina is a new company on a new path to cheap models accessible by cutting every corner possible. That’s fine but please go forward and don’t put out the old company’s flagship and reference it when it is a cheap copy. Like buying an overpriced piracy. Only legal because the new company holds the same name as the old company that cared so much for the details.

I’m not sure what the point of this video is. You can’t get the old model anymore so what’s the contest? I’m a follower of your channel and you seem quite happy with your Santa Ana, there’s no need to boast about it being “the real” model. I’m pretty sure most folks a stoked about being able to buy the ship again and gonna make it work. And could understand making a video about the price of the new ship, seeing you don’t get sappeli or African walnut, but your just talking it down. That’s just small minded mate.

I respectfully disagree with you Paraplax. It seems to me that in an instance where a manufacturer is re-issueing a product, it is absolutely ripe for comparison and reasonable to do do. I rely on John's experienced judgement concerning what brands are of top quality and those that are falling by the wayside. For example, I wouldn't purchase anything new from Artesania at this point bc of John's reviews. If someone disagrees and thinks the new kits are wonderful then good for them and happy building. In the end, it's simply an opinion. But in John's case, it's an experienced one.

I did ask John to comment as I was curious how the new model compares. We have heard such great things of the old one, and I wanted to build it but I could not... now maybe I can - is the new one worth my money? Or after his experiences on the Endeavour, and after what he can see from the new model, is it a risky purchase?
