Ziggy For sure. Peace, love, and music. I'm beginning to think there is a malevolent power bent on keeping us divided, but it makes believe the opposite. The MSM shows the worst case scenarios and lays blame. Something directs the MSM, a political power that requires war in us at every level from the planet to our living rooms. In my youth I realized half my heroes were black people. My heroes come from all countries and backgrounds. I'm an artist, art is another universal language. My heroes even include cavemen who injected the spiritual aspect of our most shared experience, life, into simple images with simple tools. No matter how specialized or advanced our tools of communication become they are no better than the spirit employing them. That is how 'One String Jones' in an alley can touch the heart as deep as a full orchestra playing Beethoven. The song we just heard touches my spirit. I think that Santana album might have been the first album I ever bought, I was 13 years old. That album or Janis Joplin 'Pearl'. Amazing to think that as kids we had natural soul, could feel the indescribable thing that annihilates the man made monster set on dividing us from birth. Something makes money from division. I think I might know now, but I don't want to muss up a nice comment by saying something political. (European globalists from the EU and UN that live in mansions and mountain tops and are of the same breed and families as those who enslaved South Africans to harvest gold and diamonds from their own land and turn it over to them. Now they embrace 'diversity', but such is a lie as they plan to stuff all in the same mold and press out an ant farm of slaves that will live on their crumbs.)

I can't help but think that the lack of today's computer generated and/or enhanced musical wizardry made those artists better because to make your sound the way you want it, you must learn the capabilities of the instrument. That takes time and effort, something wasted on today's music generators. When I was interning for a college class at a local t.v. station a famous saying was "we'll fix it in post." All too often music is made "in post."

I'm sure somebody has probably mentioned this but if not, Carlos Santana (the guitarist) and the rest of the band Santana were hanging out backstage, thinking that they had several hours before they were to perform. Consequently, they were _tripping balls_ on acid! However, the crowds flocking to the Woodstock festival had the roads so log-jammed that several acts were not able to make it to the stage on time. Suddenly, Santana were told "you're up next!" During the video, you see Carlos Santana (21 years old! OMG, so young!) playing with his eyes closed. That's not just the emotion and intensity. He said later in interviews that he had to close his eyes because whenever he looked at his guitar neck it kept turning into a snake!

Something you will notice if you look up woodstock performances,....you have bands who would be thrilled to play a venue with 30,000 people who were suddenly confronted with an audience that varied from 300,000 to 500,000. You could see it in their faces, hear it in their voices. They were awestruck. And, consequently, they gave the performances of their careers.

Sometime, check out as much of Woodstock as you can. Don't know if you know the story -- but it was basically a disaster that turned into a historical event. The concert attracted more people than expected, 400k people, to a little farm in the Catskills. They got rained out. The roads were closed for miles around due to muddy conditions and the number of people.. They didn't have first aid, facilities, food, or water for so many. The army had to airlift supplies in. It was a muddy, messy, desperate disaster. And it was one of the single most important events in music history

Woodstock took place in August of 1969; and though it wasn't planned that way, the concert became a free concert. It was so large, New York State was forced to shut down the Thruway. The Isle of White a year later was even bigger, but not as peaceful. While Woodstock fostered a feeling of brotherhood, the Isle of White brought out a lot of anger and hostility. Before Woodstock, the Beatles concert at Shae Stadium in 1965 was the biggest concert ever.

I so wanted to go to Woodstock! But, of course, at 16 years old in 1969 my parents, wisely, declined to allow me to go. That was a 3 day event and 500,000 people on Mr. Yasgers farm in upstate New York. It was, and still is, the most epic event in concert history. When I discovered Santana I thought I'd found something no one else was wise to. The music was different with a rhythm I was unfamiliar with but wanted to know, congos, a language (Spanish) that was not my native language (it's now my 2nd language), and guitar playing like I'd never heard before. I was mesmerized. Black Magic Woman, Samba Pa Ti, Jin Go Lo Ba - these are all songs from Santana's earlier work. In 1999 he released another album after a long absence from the music scene, Supernatural, that was a collaboration of several different artists and Carlos Santana. Please give Carlos Santana more play. You won't regret it.

There were at least 400,000, perhaps up to close to 600,000 people at Woodstock. Unbelievably by the time Jimi took the stage at 8AM on Monday morning, there was maybe only 50,000 left. Thjose that did saw the most epic of performances though! Although huge, I think IoW 70 may have had more in attendance than Woodstock. Pretty sure Atlanta Pop in 70 had more than both. I am sure its all out there in google land! Back to Santana, this song is edited in the movie. The full version lasts close to 12 minutes. I would recommend anyone who enjoys this song to seek out and find the full unedited audio version. If you liked Michael Shrieve's drumming, there is a lot more of it in the full length version. Check it out!

Yeah, Santana was hot! Man, they deserved a record deal after that! As for Jimi, sadly with the bad weather he didn't take the stage til 8AM Monday morning and there was probably 50K left by then. Add to that he had a hack band who rehearsed for a few days and it really didn't work. It was cool to see the new direction, and it was an epic gig at over 130 minutes, but lack of rehearsal, not top flight musicians at the time, save for Mitch, it just wasn't tight as it could have been if they had been together longer. But Jimi was going through Dem Changes hard at that point in time. I knew a guy who saw Jimi at WS. Bet he was glad he stayed! LOL He was there whole time, so saw Santana too of course.

Being in the UK, I missed Woodstock, though it's my most played DVD, but I was at the IoW the next year. I'm fairly sure we didn't match those crowd numbers. The biggest groups went on last each day but that was at about 2 a.m., the dead hour.

I was a Freshman in high school here in the Bay Area when Santana headlined a benefit concert at my high school for a Korean orphan we were sponsoring three months before their first album was released. Seeing them rocking this song in our high school gym that very first time blew me away completely. I was hooked and I've been a die-hard Santana fan ever since! P.S. Yes...what you are seeing at the end there was the incredibly huge crowd at Woodstock.

I know. but drum solos are not revered today like they were back then and a young man with young man ears is most likely going to be bored by a 5min plus drum solo. This is why for the most part most bands just don't do them anymore. we have to know the audience when making requests to them.

Carlos Santana on lead guitar, yes. Fun fact: Santana was virtually unknown when, at the last minute they were invited to play at Woodstock due to another band being unable to attend. They had been playing very small outdoor type concerts, but nowhere near this scale - but Carlos KNEW they were ready. Since they were the new kids, they were scheduled to be one of the last bands to play. Someone gifted them a trip (acid) & they all endulged, since they new they had at least 3-4 hours before they were due on-stage - plenty of time to trip & settle back down before hitting the stage. It's common knowledge now that the sceduling of this concert was not nearly as regimented as big concerts are today. Approx 20 mins after they each dropped their fun snack (acid), the promoter came to them in desperation - they needed to go on-stage next, directly when the act on-stage right then got through! They didn't dare refuse, as this was their debut into the big concerts! So they went on & this is the result. In an interview about his (amazing) life, Carlos commented about this performance, saying the entire performance was done by angels. He said his guitar was a huge slippery snake, he was fighting to hold on to it.....He prayed to God, saying "Please, PLEASE.....let us perform as good as I KNOW we can be & I will NEVER make this kind of mistake again!" (Meaning take drugs before a performance) - and he said he hasn't & neither have his band-mates. Knowing this, it's amazing to watch this video knowing how he struggled to get through this performance, as he LOOKS like he is in total control while playing. He knew that performing at Woodstock would be a huge step in his career & it was..... I recommend watching his bio (avail on youtube), as his life is really amazing.... Born in poverty, raised with his musician father (father played mariachi music) & soaking up music knowledge as a kid, yet somehow keeping his focus by meditating & praying daily. His view of life is refreshing to here about - and his deep faith is Incredible to behold. You might notice how many band members he has. He is a big promoter of anyone with talent, regardless of genre or instrument. Having received some "breaks" in his early career, he is paying it forward. He's a guy we all would be lucky to call friend. The cherry on top is his musical gift -

Due respect Sir. I'm not going to be a typical flamer. You are young so you just don't know. I was 15 visiting in Washington DC when I read about the "concert" and who all was playing. I had just about talked my uncle into taking a road trip up there for the weekend when I heard that the interstate was closed and you couldn't get within 100 miles of the place. Do yourself a favor. Mix a drink - or whatever your indulgence is - and watch the movie. As everyone has said, this is the shit, short version of one of - if not - THE best live rock performances in history. I assume by now you've seen the real deal. The other song on the short list is Lynyrd Skynyrd Free BIrd when the opened for the Stones in England in 1976. After playing an entire set, they end with this which is about 3 songs by itself. And at the end Allan Collins shreds his axe similar to what Michael Shrieve did with the drums and just leaves the planet. My son wanted me to hear a song and he told me it was the greatest rock song ever. I listened, then played him these two. He said, "Oh shit. Never mind." Get a drink - whatever - and headphones: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3iueotolLucfJo One last suggestion from Woodstock. I'm Going Home by 10 Years After. It drags in the middle - keep in mind Alvin Lee and hundreds of thousands were higher than Snoop Dogg - but listen to it all the way through. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIiYfmiuoc-Xeas Also, since I'm old and you are not, I'd like to know if you know of anyone playing now can come close to this. Only ones I've found is Sturgill Simpson with the Dap Kings, that's about it.

Lynyrd Skynrd's problem is telling Neil Young off when he wrote his scathing song about slavery "Alabama". I loved Lynyrd Skynrd until they replied in song "Mr. Young, a southern man don't need you around anyhow", in defense of southern racist culture. Better to go with Allman Brothers "Whipping Post". So I would recommend Neil's Alabama. And I am still recommending the matchless Nina Simone's Sinnerman. Ty, you have to see it live. She plays the piano for about a minute before singing. It will blow your socks off.

Just catching this one and having grown up in the 60's south of San Francisco, Santana was a local band and Carlos was also washing dishes as a living. They hit it BIG TIME at Woodstock, I see one of the comments mentioned the drummer, Michael Shrieve, who was the youngest member of the band who had just turned 20. And that amazing guy on the organ was a 22-year-old named Gregg Rolie who later went on to be an original founder of Journey. The music in the Bay Area those years was incredible!

This performance put Santana on the map. They were high on LSD. He said in an interview that the neck of the guitar kept wriggling like a snake and he was just trying to hold on to it. They had expected To go on later but because of traffic jams other performers couldn’t get there on time so they were told they were next. They had just taken a hit of acid and planned on chillin’ before going on. Lol.
