Former police officer Wayne Couzens has already pleaded guilty to the rape and murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But as his sentencing hearing began today, shocking details emerged of how he was able to abduct her by handcuffing and falsely arresting her in plain view of other members of the public.
Her parents came to court today to face her killer and voice the anger and anguish that her death has caused Sarah's family and friends, but also to share their treasured memories of their daughter.

The blatant way she was stopped, with his car pulled up on the pavement - I'm willing to bet, that that wasn't the first time he'd abducted someone like that and that his attacks had become increasingly violent and ultimately, deadly.

I think about this a lot - in many cases like this, there were times when friends must feel that if they hadn’t done a particular thing, their friend would still be alive! Take Milly Dowler’s case for example - her friend Danielle encouraged her to get off the train a stop early to get chips at the station cafe. 20 mins or so later, she started walking home from the station and was abducted on that walk. Although it was absolutely NOT Danielle’s fault what went on to happen, she must beat herself up that she suggested Milly joined her. If she hadn’t, Milly would have stayed on the train and got home safely! With James Bulger, all the people who stopped the boys who abducted him to ask what they were doing must beat themselves up too! There must be so many ‘what ifs’ to situations like this - it’s tragic. Sarah was such a beautiful young lady, and for this man to have done what he did to her, he deserves to rot in jail!

mmmh sorry but not really... not All women are so naive, I wouldn't have fallen for that, firstly because I would've never violated lockdown rules, but even if that was the case, I know a single policeman can't arrest someone without clear proofs, the max they could do was fine me, but still, he needed to catch me in the act, you can't arrest someone only because of suppositions , hence I would've never allowed to be arrested and handcuffed, despite what he might've said to me, because I know the law and I know my rights. That should be a teaching for everyone: read the newspapers, inform yourself and be aware of what happens around you, so that it will be more difficult for someone to fool you.

100% agree about the violent porn issue. It's the elephant in the room and the shame of our digital age that no one wants to address. I literally cannot fathom the disturbing levels of contradiction of our society. The message of 'don't harm women' is just a tiny little bit undermined by the abundance of sickening content out there depicting horrific violence against women and girls in porn. No one can honestly believe that young boys consuming that content every day aren't deeply impacted and desensitised. Police officers also have to go to court regularly where they are further scrutinied. The list goes on, don't think they are in the job and are free to roam and do what they please, they are out on the streets in the public eye and every action being judged daily. To restrict anyone's ability to carry out a task like for in this case making an arrest based entirely on a person's gender is in my opinion a very dangerous position ! Are we then going to find that other social groups, minorities or individuals demand the same level of protection be given to their respective groups ? Police think and, in many situations, do get away with far too much illegal behaviour. This guy for example exposed himself in public a week before he murdered this woman, it was reported and brushed under the carpet by his colleagues. Had he been charged and sacked this woman would still be alive. It’s time Police are held responsible for the crimes they commit.

It’s heartbreaking 💔 feeling the highest degree of hurt 😔 what this beautiful young woman who had her whole life ahead of her endured. I simply can not imagine how she would feel at the time she engaged with the perpetrator an actor who abused his position to take the life of an innocent person. Why the darkness ever came near this beautiful light I will never understand? What is to be learned from this? The family must be knotted with pain, disbelief, and now have to listen to the gruesome details about the last hours of how their daughter had to live in court. Nothing is enough to make matters any better for this family. I pray to God in the name of Jesus and the Holy Spirit to help guide you the family of Sarah through the deepest darkest hours of your lives, may you find peace of mind in this senseless murder. God Bless You All and Keep You Comforted. Sylvia from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Uk 🇬🇧

So heartbreaking how her sister will never be an aunt to Sarah’s children and her brother never an uncle to Sarah’s children and her parents never experiencing being grandparents to Sarah’s children. Her boyfriend who will never forget that last phone call arranging their next get together. Her father never getting to walk her up the aisle, her mother and sister never being able to do the girly outings to the bridal shops. Yep, sometimes life is just too unfair. Where do the family start with trying to pick up the pieces? Can you imagine how they felt having to clear out her home?....there will have been all the signs there of somebody who felt that they had their whole life ahead of them😢

I'm from the US, so I don't know how things work over there. Do your laws require young women to allow themselves to be handcuffed by police when they know for sure that they didn't break any of your laws?

Going to her friends house for dinner/ drinks meant that Sarah was actually breaking COVID laws( which when confronted by Him meant she probably felt guilty for going to her friends house) at a time when COVID cases were very high. She probably had no real interaction with police before. The COVID laws were changing rapidly every other week so it’s very understandable she was confused about it all. She was compliant thinking she’ll sort it out at the police station. The handcuffs were a bit extreme but she thought it was protocol like must of us would in that situation unfortunately.

People like Wayne Couzens are a special kind of human being - a very, very sick, psychopathic kind! How can you put someone through the kind of ordeal he did and simply not care about the terror and pain you are inflicting, before ending their life! I can’t even begin to imagine how terrified Sarah must have been, or the grief her family are going though! They must replay it over and over in their minds, desperately wishing they could turn the clock back and save her! It doesn’t bear thinking about! A beautiful young woman with her whole life in front of her! I hope Couzens rots in his cell! Apparently he was shaking as he was sentenced to his whole life term - well, I’m sure that wasn’t as scary as the ordeal he put Sarah through! Maybe such a long time in prison will give him the chance to reflect on what he did to Sarah, and the irreversible damage he has inflicted on her family!!

The worst kind of policeman you can ever encounter He was only interested in one thing that was to carry out an evil plan and poor Sarah was at the wrong place at the wrong time but had it not been her It would have been another female who would have paid the price I hope there are no more tragedies like this one Women are so vulnerable it's appalling that even in the 21st century men like cousins exist to rape and murder women

This extraordinarily shocking case in the United Kingdom is somewhat reminiscent of a case from twenty-nine years ago in which a deputy sheriff of Harris County (Houston), TX egregiously violated his oath of duty when he murdered a woman 'under colour of authority' by obtaining an arrest warrant under patently false pretenses.
