My best advice is to open your palette at least once a week and give each color a stir. If any colors look suspect, use a clean brush and remove the top layer, then drop a tiny drop of clove bud oil into it. This is antimicrobial and keeps anything from growing. Don’t add too much as it can change the consistency. If any colors look dry, add a spritz of water and stir. Using the gouache regularly helps avoid these issues, plus it means you’re practicing and improving!

@@monalisamackey783 There's not a direct equivelant, but if you mix the red/yellow with white (more red) you'll get a pale pink. Add a tiny touch of blue to lean towards brown. (Mixing all three primaries in various ways gives you a lot of browns)

I never have a problem with Schminke Horadam going mouldy. The only brand with which I find that is a problem is M.Graham which uses honey in their formulation.

Schmincke's Titanium Gold Ochre is also available in Winsor and Newton under the name "Naples Yellow Deep." They're both the same pigment, PBr24. ☺️

I'm a watercolor artist and a professional face painter. I just bought my first set of gouache paints last weekend (they were on clearance at Hobby Lobby, and I had a gift card). It's amazing how different types of paint require some different techniques to get the most out of them. I've found that I can actually paint some of my face painting designs (mostly flowers) with the gouache paints, as well as the "one stroke" painting style. I'm going to have fun with these paints. You video has been very informative, and I'm definitely subscribing.

All cool primary colors. I also like that better than the traditional primaries. It’s also probably why, in the traditional four-color printing process, magenta is the red that is used.

Spraying and stirring with a toothpick after letting water sit on it for w0 minutes brings it back completely. Just don’t add too much water. And Sarah if you want your Shinhan gouache creamier like your other favorites, just add a few drops of gum Arabic to your gouache. I have the same sealable palate as you and after going through a lot last year I had burnout and needed time to grieve so my gouache went untouched in my little sealable palette. 5 months to be exact and because I added gum Arabic and 2 drops of clove oil to each color and stirred them up, I had absolutely no mold, and most of the colors except for three were still pretty creamy although a bit drier so I needed to wet them. I was so amazed.

The Shinhan is creamy. The Holbein is the more stiff of all of mine. But yes, I could definitely add some gum arabic. And also the Winsor & Newton watercolor blending medium makes it more usable too.

I've started to use gouache last year and I bought Winsor and Newtons introductory set [split primaries + black, white, yellow ochre, and an unnecessary green 😄]. seeing the paintings in the sketchbook brought me back to the days I would binge watch gouache paintthroughs i miss those days 😩 your prefered palette looks like the CMY w/o the K (black) and I second that it's probably the best primary palette since the gamut possbilities are wider than the classical RYB. Holbein, Da Vinci, Royal Talens, Maimeri are some brands that have the CMYK+W starter sets

Thanks so much for your videos! I love your work. I often use gauche in a dried palette (easier for travel) - I add a humectant to the paint before drying in the pans (usually in layers). You can use honey and/or vegetable glycerin (I use a combo plus a little gum arabic). Just a drop or two per half pan should do it - I add more to colors that dry harder. This prevents cracking and allows the paint to be re-wet much more easily. Caveat - adding too much will make the paint stay sticky (like M. Graham watercolors) and may make the paint shiny when dry, usually if used in a thick layer. Adding just enough to keep the paints from cracking is the perfect amount - it may take some trial & error. I also use a little of the mixture if the hardened paint starts to come out of a pan (ditto for watercolor) - it acts like a glue but does not harm the paints nor the lightfastness.

My brushes have finally made it to Canada and cleared customs, hoping they reach me in the next few days! Appreciate the mixing tips and seeing the 3 primaries you enjoy working with. That’s where I struggle, picking my 3 because there are so many different combinations to try! I follow a number of artists in different countries and always find it interesting to hear the brands that are easily available / affordable in different places. I’m just thankful that Jackson’s ships everywhere so I can purchase Schmincke and have it shipped, because it is incredible expensive here. Winsor & Newton is also very expensive here (and sometimes hard to get certain colours). Unfortunately, W&N can’t be shipped to Canada from Jackson’s. My local art store carries Maimeri gouache and it’s probably the easiest/cheapest for me to buy. I bought W&N 10-tube intro set of gouache (cost $100 Cdn, compared to $44 Cdn at Jackson’s…if they could ship it to Canada).

I heard about clove oil being a perfect solution for keeping oil paints wet and mould free. Maybe that could help you with guache as well? Just a drop or two onto a sponge should do the trick. 🙂 I have to get that stay wet palette you are using. I'm an oil painter and would like to try plain air gouache painting for a while before I do oil plain air sessions. This would be a perfect solution for me! Thanks for sharing your arsenal of tools!

Hello Sarah, from a New Yorker living in Madrid, Spain (love is blind and will take you anywhere and everywhere!). But enough about me... I joined your KZbin channel a couple of months ago (I don't usually post a lot) and I was thrilled!!! So... Thank you for sharing your Art, your techniques and your vision... I recovered my Artistic side this past year. I had to give it up as a teenager due to Life... But I am back with a vengeance (LOL in a good way!). Your channel was inspiring and it was the first example of Gouache I saw... I was using pencil, coloured pencils, ink and wash as well as only watercolor... But after watching you I decided it was the next step! And I thankfully took it!! Do thank you very much! I have a question, though... I have been using ( all Artist grade) W&N, some Schmincke (only for some "special" colours) and I bought some Daniel Smith this Christmas, but I would like to know your opinion on using them (mixed) with some Holbein from the US (which have a different binding, based on "honey", or so I understand)... Do they really mix and blend together well? And do they have similar maintenance? I just don't want to spend the money if their could be an issue... (I'm constructing my palette from multiple brands, depending on the colours I need). Sorry to bother you and, again... Thank you very much for your work and sharing... it has been very inspiring and I will continue to watch your channel with great expectation!. Cheers from Madrid!!!!

It's totally fine to mix brands. The only thing I'd consider with a 'honey binder' is that I've heard from many people that those will grow mold faster in an air-tight palette unless you use them like constantly..

Your gouache sketches and paintings are sooo lovely - watercolours are the love of my life but often I'm tempted to try gouache because I love the matt look of them and I often wonder if painting with gouache is easier than watercolours because it appears to be easier to control???

They both have their quirks and things you have to get used to. In general I’d say watercolor is the hardest of all the mediums. Since gouache is opaque you can technically cover up something you paint. But you also have to contend with the blending monster!

I had another question... since I am usually travelling a lot and can't find time for nature (which is my passion - nature and wildlife as a photographer and, now, painting)... What type of colours would you suggest in Gouache for more if an "urban sketching" (as they call it now... to me it was always "painting out doors", but things change)... I'm asking you because I'm not sure which base colours might be best and I've seen other videos and I would like an opinion from a real artist as yourself... Again... I have a smallish set of WN gouache. But here in the U.S. WN Designer Gouache is very pricey. Unfortunately, Jackson's can't ship to the US, and the UK price for WN gouache is much more reasonable. I guess due to some trade restrictions? Don't know. But I saw a review of Turner Acryl gouache that was a lot more affordable and pretty impressive, so I bought a small set and they swatched out very nice. I think they would really be good for underpainting, as the acrylic won't rewet. I'd like to try their regular gouache too.

I'm very new to gouache but have been using watercolor for a while and the "one Gouache question" I keep on asking myself is: If Gouache is something like an "opaque version of watercolor" why does it need to stay wet between sessions? Couldn't you let it dry in a palette like watercolor and rewet from there? Or would it behave so differently after rewetting that it would not perform as needed anymore?

Watercolor isn’t opaque. It requires water to activate. Gouache is opaque in its liquid form, before you add water. So if you let it dry it requires water to activate, and thus losing some opacity

Nice to have discovered your channel! Saw you on Jess Karp's video. I'm subscribed! I've only been using watercolor medium for 2 years and recently started gouache. It helps me formulate a better understanding of these two mediums if i can get a side by side tutorial. Eg: Blending watercolor vs gouache. Creating highlights using watercolor vs gouache. What is "transparency" when using gouache in place of watercolor. Maybe you have covered this in another video on brushes (i'll check your videos out) -- do you advice sharing brushes between the mediums and why? I worry about the longevity of the brushes as I tend to be more "forceful" when I pick up gouache and I definitely need to clean my brushes vigorously. Thank you!!

Dear Sarah : I am a Graphic designer , I’ve been using W&N designers gouache for 35 years , It is what we GD use to paint illustrations at college . And by experience they are not so lightfast , my pictures lasted only max 8 years with the bright colors they had .

I’d never heard of a wax finish, very interesting. I’ll check to see if you have a video on that. I can’t seem to find the list of artists working in gouache that you said were worth looking for? Haven’t used gouache in many, many years and looking forward to starting again. Turns out it was the same price to buy a 24 set of Holbein as the 10 tubes I wanted in W&N (the world of commerce can be quite baffling), so I’ll start with those. Loved the look of your brushes, such nice long bristles! They should get here in a couple of weeks :)

Acrylic is permanent, plastic based paint. Gouache is more like watercolor, not permanent and gum arabic binder

You little square travel palette looks perfect, with that flexible sealing liner. But when I go to your supplies link, Jackson shows a teaser of it, then flips to their general site, and it doesn’t show up under travel palettes or palettes in general. Is it discontinued? Hi Sarah, I'm just getting into gouche and loving it. Can you answer a question for me, can you paint ordinary gouche over acrylic gouche? I've got both and wondered if you can do a background with the acrylic so it doesn't move when you paint on top thanks

Gouache will usually only stick to a somewhat porous surface so a slick sheet of acrylic may not work.

Thank you for this advice, I’ve been trying to paint scandi style with undiluted acrylic, but it’s not going well, can’t seem to get a clean finish, tends to go muddy. Wondering if it’s my technique, or I’ll have better success with gouache.

I love water colour and have been toying with the idea of trying gouache. Is there a big technique change? More than the amount of water you use

You can use gouache similar to watercolor (diluted). But to get the most out of it, usually using less water and let the color remain more opaque. That's what makes it unique. The biggest change would be that gouache never 'cures' meaning it doesn't become permanent like acrylic. If you get your dried painting wet, the color can be reactivated. Some people hate that. But I like being able to blend into my underlayers.

Can I ask you, how do you get rid of your gouache and watercolor water? I heard some people get rid of their acrylic paint water in kitty litter and then throw it out in the trash. I’ve just been dumping them down my kitchen sink 🫣

Yes, the sink. For acrylics or anything heavy, I use the bucket method. You can also buy a ‘crash kit’ by Golden

I love the purity/brightness of the colors even if I do struggle with some of them (hard to rewet) and I'm curious to know if it's the way I use them or if it's just the way they are. Are there some colors harder to rewet by example?

@@reneecailloux2573 I very rarely let my gouache dry out. I use it in fresh liquid form. That’s why I use a stay-wet palette or my travel palette.
