Her videos are so informative and I like how she not only shows you the straight line, but then goes over how to use it in practice - without speeding up the video. I also learned the value of the starting stitch and how the “no knotting” method works. And, I appreciate that she doesn’t edit out her mistakes and instead shows us how she corrects them. Her Palestrina stitches are so beautifully done!

Such an enjoyable relaxing video. I appreciate that you first show how to do the stitch in a straight line and then apply it to a letter. Beautiful work.

When I was a kid growing up in the fifties I was sent every Saturday afternoon to the house of an elderly lady to learn embroidery. Whenever I fly anywhere now, I get one of those little embroidery kits to keep my fingers and mind busy during the flight - for some reason, I’ve realised that a needle is one thing security doesn’t mind you taking on board! Now I can practice some letters as well :-)) Thanks for posting!

Thank you for the refresher course. I am 55 and I used to embroider with my great-grandmother as a child. I loved it, and I loved the time with her. I am a grandmother now and want to embroider my granddaughters name on everything. When she is older I hope to teach her. I will have to practice till then. I am starting off with pillow cases with their names for Christmas. I have never seen that last stitch before it's very pretty. Thank you.

Thank you for all your wonderful tutorial videos Sarah. The Palestrina stitch has always intimidated me. I watched this video again, took a deep breath and worked a few samples (as you recommend in another video) and I manged to master the stitch - well, sewed it well enough to add to the embroidery I'm working on at the moment anyway. I was so pleased with myself that I bragged to my husband, who knows what's good for himself, and he complimented my neat stitches. 😀

It's the little details that so improve our stitching! I learned three things: the two little stitches after the waste knot, deciding the direction of the loop based on the curve of the letter, and the leaving a little space when stitching where the letter crosses. None of my methods left me satisfied with the result. I will put all three of your methods into place.

Thank you, Sarah, that was nicely detailed and easy to follow. I'm just beginning, and I'm glad to have found you early on - I feel like I've gotten a running start! One comment on the overall video, which was excellent overall...I notice that in many, many tutorials, across all kinds of craft, the artist never shows the entire final product. I wish you had showed us the full array of embroidered letters at the end of the demo, to get an idea of how each style contrasts with each other, as in a sampler. I was looking forward, after following through all the intricate work, to seeing a final product - closure, if you will! And a useful tool for selecting and designing.

It is lovely to watch how basic stitches can be used for lettering. I thought that the extra step that you took to show how to do each stitch in a straight line BEFORE applying it to the selected letter is marvelous. And the letters are beautiful. Thank you so much Sarah. You are a wonderful teacher with the patience you take by doing it slowly and explaining clearly what you are doing. I do have to say that the Palestrina stitch is stunning. I have never seen that stitch. It does take time, but it is not impossible. It just takes patience. How else can you use that stitch? I can see that being used as a straight line border to edge a piece. Or using it in a fancier way by doing a flower border. What do you use it for?
