You really shouldn't need to see a myofunctional therapist. If you were able to achieve the four goals of myofunctional therapy, then you'd probably be doing just fine.
The four goals are:
Nasal breathing
Lip seal
Proper tongue posture
Correct swallowing pattern
When you first think about these goals, they don’t sound too difficult. After all, how hard can it be to breathe through your nose, close your mouth, and put your tongue in the right place? And who has trouble swallowing?
Human beings evolved to be able to easily do the four goals, all day and all night - they're basic human functions. In a perfect world, none of us would need a myofunctional therapist.
But we've changed as humans. Many people have compromised craniofacial structure and it's becoming harder and harder for everyone to achieve one or even all of the four goals. And if you can't, it's a sure sign that you're dealing with some kind of dysfunctional pattern or habit. Whether that's breathing through the mouth, having a low resting tongue, a tongue-tie, or a tongue thrust swallowing pattern, you'll problem need professional help to work your way out of these dysfunctions.
That's where myofunctional therapists come in!
