Why did my dentist and orthodontist never tell me these things? I had a tongue thrust and I've had braces 3 times and my bite continually opened. Now that it is corrected, im going for round four....but thousands of dollars later of course. They gave me a sheet of exercises which did nothing because I didn't know the goal was to keep my tongue suctioned at the roof of my mouth

@@meRguitarLUVR only if you do it concusly ,after a bit the tongue naturally sucktion up ,is really impossible ( at least for me ).The tongue is a very large muscle ,when you close your mouth and you really relax the tongue fills all the oral cavity ,this is really normal there is nothing difficult about that really 😆.I can prove you that by a little experiment ,go to the mirror and open your mouth and start to mouth breathe as you can see the tongue stay low ,now with your mouth open breathe through your nose and reflectevly you can clearly see and feel your back of the tongue goes up , because of that we are allowed to breathe more easily through our noses ,this is normal and natural and as i said there is nothing difficult about that .

If you want to see if your tongue is actually positioned right then put it into the position that you think it's supposed to be in, pinch your nose, and try to breath through your mouth without moving your tongue, if you have to move your tongue then you have it in the right position.

adi b that’s because you are not used to put it in the roof of the mouth and it’s weak because of that, you need to strengthen your tongue, it will take a few months but eventually your tongue will stay there effortlessly Quick tip: If you want to know if the third back of your tongue is on the right position look at your double chin, it will move when you put your tongue in the right direction, try swallowing and see how your double chin changes shape, and it actually disappears (if you are not fat)

TIP: Before going to bed, get a bandaid, regular size, put it across your lips - slant manner - and you'd sleep with your lips sealed but don't feel suffocated. If staying home for many hours, you can do it. You can talk through the bandaid and you can always remove the bottom part if you need to and put it back on place. Felt tongue was too big for my mouth. When I do exercises to try and stop tongue thrusting/wrong tongue placement. And? Can sing better, longer, easier, with less strain.

Quick question, Sarah. When I fully engage my tongue on the entire roof of my mouth, I feel as though I am not able to breathe through my nose. To accommodate, I have to lower the back half of my tongue down, and subsequently I cannot maintain the full resting tongue posture for more than a few seconds at at a time. Any suggestions on how to approach this issue?

Bilal Wurie I think that you are having the same problem that I had, you have to keep in mind that the third back of the tongue is not in the throat, I were doing myofunctional therapy incorrectly for a year because of this, you have to keep in mind two things, first you shouldn’t have any problem breathing while mewing (mewing is having the tongue in the correct position) and second, the force that you should apply shall be very subtle, you just need to put the tongue up there, no need to apply any force. If you want to know if you are putting the third back of the tongue in the correct position look at your double chin, it should disappear (unless you are fat) but still be able to breathe.

I have a hard time touching all 3 points of the palate with the tongue. The second point is kind of deep and I have to bend my tongue very hard in order to touch this spot, but that's impossible. What's easier for me is getting the tongue a little back and touching the 2nd and 3rd spot. Or placing the tip on the N spot but then I touch only the 1st and the 3rd spot (this is what I do when I swallow as well). I suppose that's not a proper tongue posture. I hope after fixing my mild to moderate tongue tie things will get better. Thank you for this video!

I'm pretty sure I have a tongue tie. Ive always had a gap between my teeth, until I got braces. It hurts to try to lick lick things now all I can do is stick my tongue and and move whatever I'm kicking over my tongue. Now the farthest I can get my tongue out is either about an inch away from my upper lip pushing against my bottom lip while using my jaw. I can also reach over my bottom lip to wear the my jaw bone starts (I have a very pointy chin that I have a little crease where that part of my jaw ends and where my gums end below my front bottom teeth. It feels pointier now that the braces pushed all the spaces between my teeth out). My speech was not effected. I have always had a very normal voice without no slurs with the slight southern accent. When the gap began pinching me, I got used to resting my tongue over my bottom teeth and behind the front of my front. That led to a slight overbite to form while I had the braces and I still have brave with rubber bands now because this overbite seems like it will never go away. (I'm 2years over the estimated time to get them off now). My lips remain closed but my teeth are never touching when I'm relaxed. When I'm super relaxed I sometimes like the grind my tongue between my teeth but never teeth against teeth. Musically after braces my vocal range has expanded in the upper register as an Alto. I guess the braces led me to start stretching the muscle. I also had to get the muscle between my front teeth and my lip cut back because that also what's causing a gap. (My other freind who is an Alto has a very severe tongue tie where no part of her tongue can go outside of her teeth even.) My tongue is slightly scalloped near the back at rest. I also have a bone growth that protrudes from the center but near the front, my tongue tip can barely reach the bottom of this with my teeth together. So...yeah I gotta figure how to death with this...I don't want it affecting my voice...but it would be nice to be able to be able to not allows ask for a cup when I'm getting ice cream or bite whatever foods you lick etc. Etc. Also it might make it so my vocal range get better! Who knows. Also...maybe finally get this over bite taken care of, and braces off.

what If you have a narrow pallete and now matter how much you try to mew your tongue always touches the sides of your back teeth and you can't put your tongue fully on the upper pallete? Hi! I had braces due to a severe open bite which erupted from having a bad tongue thrust and open mouth breathing as a child. I got my braces off and my bite was perfect and the retainers did not help. I did not get therapy to fix my tongue thrust which caused my bite to slightly open again. Thankfully I have been practicing proper tongue swallowing + resting techniques and my bite has been closing!!! I am so happy because I am very insecure about my bite. So my question is, if I have gaps on the side of my teeth, will those gaps eventually close too? How much further will my bite close?

Ruling out more serious things like ALS , Parkinson's, and ms, I am hoping it's just years of bad learned habits and my tongue thrusting , clenching and teeth grinding (and mouth breathing at night ) that is causing my speech issues. I've had an MRI done to see if I had any detectable neurological problems to no avail and I guess I should be glad that nothing serious showed up but it's frustrating nonetheless as to exactly what components are contributing to this.

when you have the tongue in the right position should the tips of your teeth be touching or your back teeth???

Ruby try doing a NNNNNNN sound, you should automatically put the tip of the tongue in the correct position, and it shouldn’t be touching your teeth

I have never been able to breath out of my nose. I am always stuffed and I've seen an ENT since I was 10 w/no real help. I'm confused as to how the tongue rests up? Is Myofunctional therapy covered by insurance/through an ENT? Thank you!

You obviously need to fix the breathing first. You may have adenoids and any other sinus problems.

It's your upper jaw too narrow for your tongue. You would need ortho treatment. But keep trying.

How can you be so sure that your tongue is resting properly? Behind my top teeth there is a very small flat area before sort of caving into what is the roof of the mouth. Which side of this "cave" should the tip of the tongue touch?
@vincenzoettorre5604

I need an answer to this too... should the tip rest just right behind fron teeth or "into the cave" (like 1-1,5 inch behind fron teeth)?

I'm trying this now. I'm a bit conflicted about nose breathing all the time, just as sitting upright I find it ''active'' and sometimes I just feel the need to be passive and totally relaxed. When I truly relax I always breathe through my mouth a lot, especially the out breath, I sigh and blow a lot of air out. I find this relieves tension. Also, it is often recommened in meditation like workshops, which I frequent.

What do I do if the correct position obstructs my airway?? To be specific, the back of my tongue lands on a soft spot at the back and stops the air from my nose. I was told I have large tonsils + even tho I’ve always breathed my thru nose w mouth closed I had my tongue partially up which I probably adapted to.

your palate is narrow, you need to widen it, try hard to touch palate and push outwards on every angle . You have to see it to begin brother, look straight, keep body straight, let the tongue be in the same position as your body.
