I got my girl a ‘17 SE for $129/month lease when VW was basically giving their cars away after diesel gate, and it has honestly been one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. In 2017 all models got the GLI’s IRS so it handles well above its price, and the 1.4t is punchy at legal speeds and gets >40mpg no matter how you drive. It hasn’t needed a single repair for 70k miles and still looks and drives like new. It has had many CELs and fault codes, but it’s all just over-reactive sensors and easily cleared with an OBD Eleven scanner. We liked the little car so much that we bought out the lease after 3 years and just decided to keep it as an extra vehicle forever. The residual was so in our favor that it only took another 2 years at $250/mo to pay off. I drive WRXs and tune them to within an inch of their life, but as I get older I’m more and more tempted to trade my ‘22 WRX for a ‘17 GLI DCT with a mild tune and switch between that and the SE depending on if I’m commuting or driving for pleasure. Sure would make consumables easy to stockpile lol.

Aloha Miss Sarah! Back in 1989 my girlfriend at the time picked up her Jetta in Germany and we drove 1700 miles. Shifting into 5th at 95 was a blast plus the catalytic convertor hadn't been installed yet. 6 speed manual you're talking about would be even mo betta. PS if it is not German, it's only a car.

Just sold my '90 turbodiesel Jetta. Still running strong. Bought in Germany by overseas member of armed forces. Top end in 5th was 160 kph (100mph), but 5th was an overdrive, and you could get right up there in 4th.

I have a 2019 6 spd Jetta S. The shock absorbers are far and away the worst I’ve encountered on any new car but aside from that, it’s been such an excellent car. Well over 40 mpg on the highway and excellent torque too. Great seats and solid construction.

I miss the Bora, that was a great car that was so distinct from the Golf.

I never understood VW line up, especially when they had the Bora and the Golf estate/wagon, the CC Passat (which should have become the next big Alfa before the failed takeover)...

My first NEW car I ever had was my 2000 Jetta VR6 GLX. That car was one of my favorite cars I owned and I always regretted selling it. So unique with the VR6 and a manual. And this thing has almost the same power. Knowing what I know now I should have bought it as a GTI instead, but it was still a great car.

I own a 2023 Mazda 3 Hatchback with the 6-speed manual and I love it. Get a manual transmission while you can because they’re phasing out year after year.

Back to a timing belt? My 2001 Passat wagon has a 20V 1.8T with timing belt; 2016 Golf Sportwagen with a gen-3 16V 1.8T has a chain.

I had a 2005 (before remodel of 2005 1/2) Jetta GLI 6 speed and loved that car. Had it for 13 years before upgrading to an Audi. I do have to say my interior was much nicer with soft materials on doors and such. Does make a difference on long drivers. I blame diesel gate for cost cutting. Nice all the options given as standard like the heated/cool seats and heated steering wheel. Negative on no ports in back.

"The 2024 Volkswagen Jetta has a predicted reliability score of 81 out of 100 from US News Cars, which is considered "Great". However, Consumer Reports predicts that the 2024 Jetta will be less reliable than the average new car, based on data from the 2021 model and Volkswagen brand scores. Consumer Reports also gave the Jetta 3 out of 5 marks for predicted reliability, with the only major issue being the in-car electronics."
