I mean, everyone's style is totally different with alcohol markers but when I'm doing light toned open space or blocks of pure color, I find that if you use a very light marker and go over the space over and over again, the markers don't streak. It's really easy with brush tips, and - unpopular opinion here - the less saturated the pigment in the alcohol, the easier it is to a) make a solid, unbroken block, and b) build up intensity (unless your goal is an extremely saturated color, then: intense pigment all the way). That said, much like you can use a white colored pencil to smooth out gradients in tricky spots, you can also use the more unsaturated markers (in the same color family, mind) to even out blending if you're doing delicate shading with alcohol markers. This is also a good way to add subtle highlights of color to areas which /reflect/ light. Im gonna stop now, thanks for coming to my TED Talk. More importantly, I love the way the drawing turned out! I don't think you ruined it at all, the shading is pretty intense but with such a focus on light and shadow and a super saturated color palate? I honestly think that the risk was worth it. 👍

I quite like the marker trails in the background. I know it's not standard for an artist to leave trails like that in the background, but I'm a woodworker. One of the things in woodworking that pleases me the most, is seeing the tool marks of the hand tool woodworker in the final piece. It gives you a little bit of history, but also reminds you that somebody worked their hands to the Bone to create the amazing piece you're feasting your eyes on. I think you did a wonderful job, and it's amazing that you pushed yourself beyond your comfort zone to learn something new!

I've worked a lot with alcohol markers and the best way I've found to create an area of smooth color, large or small, is to completely saturate the paper with the marker. It will make the marker area darker when wet, but it marker ink usually dries lighter. You are a gifted artist, so keep making those mistakes. I think your skin did become much darker than what you were aiming for, but I think it works. Pale skin tends to get ashy-blond shadows. So happy to see you using the blue in the shadows! It was one of the main things I learned in art school--some people have dark blue in their skin shadows and some have a dark green. I mean we even call an entire range of skin colors for it; olive complexion is called that for a reason. But you're doing great and it's really good to see you making mistakes on camera because it shows people that art just doesn't spring out our fingers beautiful every time. I love your channel; keep up the great work.

What I always do to cover larger areas with markers is I apply either colorless blender or just 99% alcohol to the paper, wetting the whole surface. This way the ink can blend and slide around way easier, for very smooth marker blending you always need a lot of ink.

Solid color backgrounds are quite difficult to create with alcohol markers. It can be done but paper has so much to do with the final results, always keeping your leading edge wet and working across your field of view is important. I tend to create a mottled or fuzzy background like a photo using a telephoto lens, vague out of focus blobs of colors to create depth and interest in your main subject. I like how you created the gold and believe that you have created a successful illustration. Sometimes I have to leave it to the client and if I have made them happy and fulfilled my brief I gotta believe that it is a win! I have made some very beautiful artworks, I am not sure about any of them being perfect, not even what was in my minds eye when I started, but we are our own harshest critics. Be proud of yourself and your art.

Amazing depth and lighting creation! 👏👏 I think she needs a brighter lipstick, but that's personal choice!! 💄 I've never been able to do shading and markers are my least favorite art supply. You made it look simple and much more interesting!👍

I wish I had this kit back in art school. I can't afford them now but i own similar (just not as great quality) from my art supplies i got when beginning school. Since I can't get the kit, I'll settle for watching you use these mediums cuz your coloring and art is so inspirational.

I colored this page digitally awhile back and have it in my Instagram and had tweeted Jazza about it. I really like your gold trim and wish I had thought of it myself. The technique of applying a black base and going over with the green marker is a great tip I’ll log away for the future. Lighting from the behind and darkening her skin was a bold move but I think you did a great job bringing it together. Nice work!

I'm so glad you collabed with jazza, because now I'm binge watching all of your videos lol! I love your content, because I'm trying to get better with markers, pencils, and watercolors. That and I love Ariel, Aladdin, and all things disney. I'm actually really into collecting marvel/DC sketch cards, and have started making my own commissions. So I definitely need help on shading and lighting with characters. I just have smaller scale to do it on.

So excited to get my box :). I’ve not used alcohol markers before but been super interested for a long time! I’m not artistic enough to draw my own pictures but am excited to colour Jazza’s images!

You did fantastic! I would much rather see you trying to make your pieces more dynamic then keeping it simple. I think she turned out very well if a bit more tan then you were planning. Great job! 👏

Sarah, I know I couldn’t have done this. I think you did an amazing job. I struggle with skin tones myself. I do think the skins tone matched her hair, but overall Great job. Mistakes make us better

I completely appreciate your process explanation and how you plan on fixing issues…that is as helpful in teaching about drawing and colouring as the step-by-step instructions. Your lighting issues might have been helped if you had highlighted the cheekbones and nose tip like the shoulder? It also might have been helpful to find a subject example of that kind of lighting. Watching Sandy Allnock and Temi Danso would help with looking at contrast and highlights.

I did come back and try to highlight the nose and forehead, but as you saw, there were so many layers at that point that the colors just reacted strangely. But next time I try this, I know to look for other opportunities for small highlights like that!

I super appreciate sharing something you might consider a little less than perfect. That’s how art goes sometimes! I would say a secondary fill light source for her facial features might have helped balance the back light but you took a risk and that’s how we all learn. Thanks for sharing!
