I thought that the harmonium was direct symbolism to Barry himself. It doesn't really fit in anywhere; it's broken and he doesn't know how to fix it properly nor does he know how to play it properly and Lena is the first person to know what it is. At the end when he finally starts to play it I thought it showed him finally getting a hold of himself. That's my theory anyway.

The cinematography in Punch-Drunk Love is overexposed because Barry is really sensitive to his world and environment, and the overexposure of the film is another way to stylistically express hi perception of reality!!! It's really brilliant!
@furyrisen6 жыл бұрын
I guess, in regards to whether an individual has the capability to understand and acknowledge why Barry is who he is directly correlates to how those same individuals perceive and interpret the film and ideas personified within. Whether that recognizability is limited by experience, I can't really say, but personally, that's the reason it was so obviously intentional without much thought otherwise. We're on the same page, though. This was one of the few moments during a film they've discussed that left me sorta baffled the concept slipped entirely from their consideration, especially after pointing out the distinction. While the plot of the film isn't exactly beyond comprehension, apparently, the filmmaking, its awareness, and how it conveys the narrative, are.

I think Punch Drunk Love feels a lot more relevant if you struggle with issues similar to Barry - for example, this movie helped me realize that I have depression & social anxiety - when I would just see how Barry reacted to situations and other people I just thought “Wow, that’s pretty close to me” - and so it’s really reassuring seeing a guy like that find someone who genuinely cares about him y’know?

My favourite part of the score for Under the Skin was its transition. It starts off as this almost jarring tense noise. But as the character evolves and becomes more human it becomes more similar to film scores we are used to while still retaining a hint of the tense sounds from before, almost reminding us that even though she’s becoming more human, she isn’t actually human. The love making scene really emphasises this. I saw this film when I was 21 about 5 years ago and I didn’t get it because I only really watched mainstream stuff but I’ve developed a love for art films and just gave it another go and loved it.

~1:29:30 I think the reason why _some_ games steal from movies (overtly or subtly) is because videos games are relatively a new form of media, and is also much more complex. People steal already established ideas and settings and so on from movies and books because it's comfortable. Same with book-based movies and pretty much any other cross-media content. Also, the majority of games have original ideas and settings and such, especially from places like Nintendo or Square (as top-of-the-head examples).

In the UK, we use ft and inch for human height, weight is in stone and pounds although can be interchanged with kg and miles and yards for roads, everything else is in metric, escept for milk that's in pints but all other drinks are in litres unless a half or full pint from a pub and then shots are in ml and all alcohol that is in a bottle is in ml's. And then random things will interchange, but you have to learn imperial at school so you know both. So very weird half in half out, just there to stuff it to the French or something like that
@wanderingrandomer6 жыл бұрын
I never remember *having* to learn imperial, it was always just there on rulers and shit, but metric was just easier anyway, because it's used more frequently.

@@Alex-cw3rz Funnily enough, I also went to private school. Although, I do tend to use a mix of metric and imperial in daily life. I'll measure human height in feet and inches, travel distance in miles, but all other measurements in centimetres and metres. I learnt to make furniture for a while, and I'd take measurements in millimetres, but all the drill bits were in fractions of an inch.

I think the presence of the piano (or whatever it's called) in the film serves to reflect the character's feelings (as well as the director's) towards social interactions. It's something so simple, yet is also well known to be something difficult to do for a lot of people, it's literally just pressing down on a button to make a sound, hence the scene when Barry plays something very simple on it. If I remember correctly he starts by just playing one isolated note and listens to it fade. Now of course playing the piano has a lot more to it, anyone that has played the instrument properly would know, but I'm just talking about it's importance in the context of the story, especially taking into account something PTA once said in an interview related to the film. He mentioned how simple it was to play the piano, yet so many people get nervous to even start playing, and how that situation paralels to what the character is feeling, trying to convince himself that it's really not that complicated (because, as he finds out by the end of the film, it really isn't) Paraphrasing a bit of course, but you get the idea.

Punch Drunk Love was great indeed. Have you guys noticed in the scene where Barry walks around the supermarket looking for pudding, there's someone in the background out of focus who seems to be following him. That seems to be a woman, and if the dress color is anything to go by, it must be girl he ends up with. So she must have been following him for quite a lot.

The funniest part of the movie is when he runs to Utah with his broken phone still. And I think the harmonium shows him trying to learn how to love someone because he starts not even knowing how to play it to legit learning it in the end. I love this movie! It starts very painfully awkward, and even relatable in a way because growing up I've always had anger issues, and it really resonated with me. It's almost a perfect movie I'd say, it's short and very very very bitter sweet, like the beginning half started to stress me out but in the best way possible. Adam Sandler proved he's a human in this movie, like I know he makes vacation movies and kind of sucks but when he wants to be good he's really good.

I don't think there's ever been an episode of Sardonicast without sirens from Ralph's side.

This episode is almost down to the second just as long as Punch Drunk Love!

That beach scene as a father of young children was straight upsetting. That’s good film Work. So fuckin unsettling

Hope you have a good vacation Ralph, hope it doesn’t get CUT SHORT!

I found the beach scene from under the skin to be about as disturbing as the “pop” scene. The baby crying on the beach and she just walks by... nothing shows her inhuman nature than that scene alone.

Wonder how many times Ralph have said the words ‘boring’ or ‘dull’ in all his reviews

@@WolfTeen2010 this is why I am always amazed at how Anthony fantano articulates his points better than any reviewer on yt.

IMO the babdook's designs is based on German expressionism which is arguably the start of horror cinema and was partially inspired by Jung shadow theory which acts as the premise of the Babdook, so his visual are important 2 me anyway

I think that A Cure for Wellness is definitely going to be looked at as a cult classic in the upcoming years.

I see 95% of my movies at an Alamo Drafthouse in Austin and I can confirm that it is amazing. I hate going to theaters other than a Drafthouse and I often forget what it's like to go to the other movie theaters chains
