As fun as Adam's conspiracy theory is, the more hilarious truth (or at least what's reported) is that apparently some rich white producer demanded his daughter to be cast as Katara, so that necessitated the entire water tribe be cast as white, and since you can't have all nations in this movie be one race it just kinda spiraled down from there...

It’s hilarious seeing how reviled The Last Airbender is by both the fandom and those who worked on it. I got to meet Greg Baldwin, the voice of Uncle Iroh a few months ago, and when I was in line I overhead him say “there’s an Iroh in the movie that doesn’t exist” when talking about other the Iroh actors (Rest in peace Mako). I almost saw it in the theater when it came out, only to end up asking my mom to take me to see Toy Story 3 again instead. Happy with young me’s choices.

The polar opposite disconnect between the source material & the movie adaptation for the 'fights' remains an enigma. It's not even an overblown sensory-overload 'hollywood' take on the OG material. Just an idiosyncratic anomaly in absurdity. Honestly, how aren't the movie 'fights' (un)intentional comedy gold? How is this even possible? This is borderline experimental.

The reason the Fire Nation is brown is because there was already backlash to casting white leads, so they decided to change the casting of Zuko. Originally, Jesse McCartney was cast to play Zuko, but they changed to Dev Patel in response to the backlash. As another comment pointed out, they couldn't change Katara because Nelson Peltz demanded his daughter be cast as Katara, so her brother Sokka had to be white too, making Zuko the only viable choice for a recast. Funnily enough, Nelson Peltz has recently gone on record ranting about undeserving actors being cast in roles they didn't earn properly because of... DEI. It's okay when it's his nepo baby, but not when it's some hypothetical nonwhite kid.

More likely British "aang" pronunciation theory: "ayng" is actually a more anglicized way of reading that name as it's spelled, and it was simply the British refusal to pronounce any foreign word properly kicking in, accidentally being correct in this case.
