I think I paid about $5-0 for my polar bag in the mid-1970s. It was really useful on our polar bear camp weekend in 1978! We set a record -30F that year in February.

I've not camped in that kind of weather. Closest I've come is below freezing in NH. Used a surplus wool sleeping bag inside an M49 down bag. Thanks for watching!

Thoughts on the woods sleeping robe?

Its the most comfortable sleeping bag you'll ever own. Not for trekking (backpacking) but as warm as a hug from your Mama. The only Classic bag I think is better for a base camp situation is the Grant Holden and Graham bag I show in one of my "Fixin to" videos and will be the subject of one coming up in a few weeks. Its essentially the same bag, but the insulation can be taken out and aired and one side has two layers of insulation that can be used as a mattress or if very cold, you can flip it over and put two layers on top. If you're looking for a Woods bag for Classic Camping, avoid the ones with zippers. You want the ones with snaps. Thanks for watching!

@@sargevining thanks for the info! I was fortunate enough to find a nice 1920s era woods bag with the snaps and the original stuff sack on eBay a few years ago. I really like it. I will have to check out some of your other recommendations. Happy trails!

Wool underwear! I have stories of my great grandfather going to the beach in England in the summer in a full three-piece suit. I can’t imagine how hot that would be if you added wool underwear. 😄
