This is the story of my first visit to the USA from Russia in 2005 through the "work and travel" program as I remember it. It was a very weird and scary situation but it has ended up being a stepping stone to a positive path in my life. Thank you for being respectful and understanding in comments even though it's a controversial topic. ♥

That rushing you experienced at the airport, the "hurry up, decide" from the man, is a deliberate tactic used to create false urgency and override your ability to think clearly or rationally in your own best interest. It was done on purpose to you, to make a decision harder. This is a real-life PSA: *anyone who is actually acting in your best interest while "helping" you, will give you time to think and ask questions* Thank for sharing your story Maria, it was brave and courageous and can help others.

@@remaininganonymous4129 Yes, the police would (should). But remember, they were offered "help" by a "random" Russian, the only familiarity, in the midst of a whirlwind predicament. They were not thinking clearly or wisely due to so many factors (fatigue, fear, inexperience, unfamiliarity). The traffickers pre-planned this vulnerability trap knowing that it works. But going to the police is an excellent idea! 👍

Maria: You were a victim of human trafficking. According to DHS “Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act.” There’s no shame for having fallen for it. It happened. You don’t need to explain yourself, but be a voice of awareness to speak against - if you want. These things are still happening to so many people around the world. You have fought your way through this. You do something wonderful and meaningful for a living. You’re married to a man who you love and seems to be very supportive, and this love generated the most precious gift that life could give. Thank you for sharing your story with us. 🙏🏼❤️

She came to US with 3 other girls, their “chaperon” to their housing/job never showed up to the airport. They were actually split up after a few days at a motel, and Her job (where she ended up right near where I worked) took large chunks from her paycheck too. I think you’re badass Maria. Sadly, hotels do this all the time. They exploit their lower wage workers, often immigrants. They know what happens. That’s why they outsource instead of hiring them directly. It’s cheaper and they don’t have to “deal with” it.

WHY ARE WE NOT HOLDING Sheraton Hotel accountable?!?!?!?!
@nathanlonghair
@nathanlonghair 3 жыл бұрын
Because it's murky AF and nobody in power wants to go there legally. It's the same thing over and over again everywhere. The hotels have contracts (that stipulates that everything has to be legal) with a subcontractor who then does all the shady shit. If they get found out, the subcontractor just shuts down, creates a new business before the end of the week, and start up all over again - and the hotel goes free because it was all the subcontractors responsibility; they had their own paperwork in order. Oh they ABSOLUTELY know that they are getting trafficked people, but are just not saying it officially. Convenient blindness. The only way to do anything about shit like this is education and boycott, because you're not gonna get any legislation to stop it - the underlying legal mechanics are too profitable, safe and convenient for rich people.

I think it is DEFINITELY a good thing that you've gotten this story out and documented. If nothing else, I think it's very very important to see if that "work and travel" program is still active in Russia. Even without the strip club connection and the 50% of your paycheck getting taken away- the fact that you were encouraged to *not* bring money, that there were that many other "lost" people from that program PLUS that there were Russian-speaking scouts already stationed at the airport to take full advantage of the position you were in and shuttle you around the country to a network of other Russian-speaking people-- that adds up to a very clear trafficking setup. Even if you don't remember a ton of the details, law enforcement needs to be made aware of what you do still remember.
@kimrrosen
@kimrrosen 3 жыл бұрын
You're also SO RIGHT to emphasize how different the experience feels in the moment vs how one imagines it might feel to be in a "human trafficking" situation. Both you and another woman who commented and told a similar story discussed being taken to parties within your small ex-pat network where you met men who- within a very short time of meeting you- seemed ready and willing to take you into their home and take care of you- and of course all three of you took the offer out of desperation/lack of other options- a situation you'd been manipulated into. (And your first friend that you came here with ended up in the same situation.) Though THANKFULLY it seems both you and your friend and the other commenter had/have healthy relationships with those men, the recurring theme of girls in those desperate situations finding themselves in the same place as wealthy men who speak their language and are interested in someone moving in with them immediately - that is not a coincidence. And though it may not "feel" like prostitution or mail-order-bride trafficking or whatever someone is expecting it to be called, it's very likely that men are being invited to those parties with the promise that there will be a crop of new broke desperate stranded girls who are currently living off one chicken thigh every three days. And I can't imagine every girl ends up in a happy healthy marriage.

I know right? The don’t bring much money was a huge red flag but then Maria and her friend and the others did this through their college so it gives the programme more credibility. They also didn’t advise them to avoid arriving on a public holiday and Cleveland is 7hrs drive to New York? Why weren’t they told to get a connecting flight/train/bus and meet him? Much easier for traffickers to deal with ‘lost’ students in one of the busiest airports in the world.

For those of us watching and commenting: as much as it is important to name trafficking for what it is, and acknowledge that deliberately coercive and exploitative techniques were used against Maria, I want to bring focus back to the people in positions of POWER in this story. It is their fault that this happened. Maria, as a survivor of trafficking and someone who has experienced terror and abusive tactics, you are not obligated to report or react in any particular way. Every person reacts to crisis and threats to their safety/survival differently. You are finding your own path towards healing from this and it's not up to any of us to tell you how you should heal. As someone who has worked as a sexual assault support worker, reporting any kind of abuse to law enforcement can be a traumatic experience in itself. Some survivors may feel that they want to fight through the legal system as a way to access healing, but for others it may be more important to focus on establishing safety in their lives. For those of us who are listening and learning: we have immense privilege in this situation. Rather than dictating how survivors should respond, WE can take action to support organizations The Polaris Project in order to work towards ending trafficking and abuse. Please support survivors; let them heal how they need to. polarisproject.org/

Maria, you speak about this almost like you’ve normalized it in a lot of ways or allowed yourself to spiritually bypass some of the harm that was done. I can’t imagine how traumatic this was- you might consider finding a therapist who specializes in trauma to focus on this time in your life with you. The feelings of hopelessness, fear, and mistrust had to have rooted so deeply in you...make sure you keep taking care of that young girl inside you if those feelings resurface in other ways. You are such a strong woman and I’m so impressed with how you fought through that time and have come out so far ahead. We as a society need to keep working on ways to shed light on human trafficking and prosecute those involved. There’s still so much work to be done there. Thank you for sharing your story.

THIS!! Therapy is so important. Studies and funding are now moving ahead with MDMA for PTSD. Even just chatting with a professional who has experience with trauma and helps women who have been abused/manipulated/trafficked would be so deeply helpful. Maria, you help so many people with your words and caring energy - your ASMR is so popular and loved by so many. You clearly are a very giving person (sometimes this can work against us, and you had to use it to survive). We pacify people, we walk on eggshells, we are people-pleasers, we make too many compromises and we just try to reduce harm, but you clearly still have wounds (completely normal and understandable). I can only imagine how intense this would be thinking back on it now that you have your own daughter! Just for anyone else reading this; anyone in a tough situation, or with little or no money, or are being pressured: There is ALWAYS another way. You don't HAVE to do anything you don't feel comfortable with. You shoudl trust your INSTINCTS. There are good people out there, agencies, nonprofits, churches, government, police, so many people that you can reach out to if you find yourself in a similar situation. Even at the airport, they have security and police on site and ways to call people for you, or send you back home or at least let you find safete; STOP, THINK, ASK for help, for a phone call, NEVER go with a stranger who is so conveniently there to "help lost -------" whatever you might be. They are not there out of the goodness of their heart and it's not a coincidence. STAY SAFE!

BeautifullyExtreme I agree. It sounds like she’s justifying what happened because “it all came out ok”. This was a scam from the get-go; even before she got on the plane to leave her own country! Of course we had the benefit of seeing scenarios like this on Law and Order back then, which she did not at that time. Undocumented illegal workers parlayed for the sex trade. Restrict their travel funds then take their money up front and make them helpless. . Thank the Lord she IS ok. Nothing in that story was “normal” except that at 18 she was too naive to realize how much danger she actually was in. This is not a criticism of her behavior. Just that she’s not recognizing (or saying out loud at least) how seriously bad and dangerous it was.

WOW, I feel like you were scammed from the beginning by your language school. I'm a US citizen and got a one year visa to live in Sweden in 1999 as part of my language studies (I was 19). Even in that era, throughout my stay, I was in constant contact with my home university via email (using public library computers), and they and my employer abroad had to pass strict government approval before I was even approved for a visa. Also, the preparation was extensive, and I was given advice on how to set up a bank account (in addition to bringing a credit card). I had so many "outs" once I arrived if something went wrong. I could find a computer and email someone, and I always had an emergency phone card with me (which came with directions on how to call outside countries) in case there was trouble. Plus, I think my employer and my university were required to alert authorities if I didn't show up upon entering the country. To me, your story sounds like a Russian bride service or something was working with your language school to offer a totally bogus program to lure young women into their net. I'm just so confused how either government didn't catch that during the visa process. Especially when it sounds like many women from the program stayed in the US beyond their return date due to marriage. I'm so glad you made it through that ordeal safely, and that it led to your beautiful life now!

It makes me so sad to see her trying to take accountability for not being “prepared” for the trip. She deserved some guidance for something that extreme. You cant expect an 18 year old to fully know what to do.

So many of us went through this man... It's been 13 years since my "from Russia with love" story, but talking about it still makes me anxious. Being a minor, not speaking the language, trusting the people with your "background and culture"... Some of my friends had their passports and SS cards taken from them by some Armenian mob, they worked for like $2/h cleaning motels day in and day out... Your video brought so many bitter memories, but I thank God for all those kind people we met along the way, who cared enough to drag us out of that nightmare.

I hear you Maria. My arrival here from Brazil in 2007 wasn’t very smooth either. I was 21 and alone. I missed my connection from NY to Green Bay and had no clue how to get anywhere or call the agency. I had $500 as well and spoke broken English. Definitely a tough learning experience. Glad things worked out for both of us. 🙂

One of my go-tos for planning a trip overseas is to locate the Embassies/Consulates for my country nearest to where I'm staying. I write down the address, the phone number, and basic directions from either the place I'm staying or a major landmark. I also look at the google map street view for a better feel. Then I memorize how to get there. There are now apps that you can download for safer travel and they can send you updates about safety/threat levels.

But in 2005, we didn't have smartphones or apps. I myself flew to st louis from Russia in 2005 and got stuck in New York due to a snowstorm so had to figure out how to get the hotel for the night and food and all by myself with a pay phone and a very little English.

@@EvgeniyaJZ Yes...I'm aware we didnt have smart phones in 2005. The comment was about recent travel. When i traveled overseas in 2005 i had a piece of paper the size of a business card with how to call my country from the country i was in, the number of the local Embassy(with address), and emergency numbers used in that country. Most airports at the time had calling card you could buy and put money on instead of using coins. I also emailed my family regularly from internet cafés which were very common at the time. The orginal comment are all just things that can help someone now who's traveling for the first time overseas and may have some anxiety because i did the first time i traveled so far from home. (Girl Scouts/People to People Student Ambassador were two programs I was involved in as a child/teen. They have in depth information and meetings prior to traveling that I still use to this day. Just passing some of that on.)

Telling your story is so important for those who may be preyed on in the future. If someone chooses to be a stripper I suppose that is their choice but most girls do that to support drug habits or as a result of sex trafficking. It is a victim filled industry.

Maria, I’m so glad you avoided the strip club and that you were offered another option even if it was basically servitude since they were keeping you under their thumbs financially. I volunteer for an anti-trafficking organization & what happens to runaways, addicted & kidnapped victims is an absolute nightmare. It is SO DIFFICULT for them to leave that life. People with evil intent always prey on the weak or vulnerable. I’ve been hungry as well, twice, once eating potatoes for a month, then eggs for three months after death in immediate family out of town. Affairs related to the death had to be dealt with and I lost my job. Amazing how good that first real meal afterwards can taste. I can only imagine your fear in a strange country with all this happening. Thankfully, there were others to at least give you safety and a roof. I’m very happy that it all worked out well for you. We never really know what the next day will bring. Survived adversity definitely makes us stronger and more compassionate, at least of others in a similar situation. Thanks for sharing!

Makes me think about how bullshit the saying that your 20s are the best years of your life. We are vulnerable, don't know much, fragile. It's not the best, I'm 27 now and I feel like I'm better off that naivety, anger, and being impressionable that is fading away with experience.

The narrative about our 20s (and/or teens/childhood) being the best time or our life IS absolute bullshit. These years are no better or worse than our older ones, they are at the foundation of our life and are only there to pave the road for the rest. Period. Indeed, we are considerably more vulnerable at younger ages, and predators of all kinds know this all too well! Many go through really rough times at these ages, including because of this. No idea why some people would pick this kind of mess over being a confident adult...
@loveamerica5725

I have to agree and disagree with you on this. Part of the reason why young peolle today are saying that its BS is because they were never prepared properly by their parents to live independently to the point where they can "have the best time of their life". I was 20 when I moved out, worked and went to school full time, and learned the hard way about life. But by the time I was 25 I had a good job, I lived in a nice apartment and was making enough money to pay rent and eat live comfortable. Today young people have helicopter parents that teach them nothing or buttloads of student debt because they think getting able degree in advanced lesbian studies will help them in life. Young people are being led astray by their parents and this is the reason why they feel that way. Now that being said, I will say my 30s have been the best years but that is because I got married and had children. But I couldnt have done it had it not been for the foundation of the 20s. Anyway, that's my 1 cent. Enjoy your life to the fullest and make smart decisions and you will be successful.
