I work with an Albanian. I asked him his biggest difference between USA and Albania and he said the same thing u di about work. He said "In Albania you have no money but you have time. In America you have money and no time"

Asking "how are you?" Is a greeting more than a question.

Very true. American phrases don't always mean the same as what the words are individually... like "bless you heart" when spoken by an older female(aunt or great aunt) in the south translates to something quit ugly depending on their tone spoken

I have a Russian daughter, in law married to my son. There is something that I really appreciate about her that is hard to define, kind of a directness or realness. I would probably enjoy visiting the country and going around meeting people. You speak english very well.

What's really funny is that you can hear the Russian when she says "My family **lives** in Russia," but then hear tried and true Maryland when she says the word "Maryland."

tmedocianis THIS! I was actually taking note of how southeast her accent can be at times while being super Russian at once. Baltimore definitely helped influence her accent a ton and I’m even noticing how California is affecting it. Her voice is everything.

I also got chills when you were talking about how accessible things are for those with disabilities and how it is becoming more common for places to help them and normalize it. I love how we strive to include those with disabilities. 🥰 it’s very important to me because a lot of my friends and family have disabilities both physical and mental.

Of course this phenomenon took protests on behalf of disabled people, and years of advocacy to secure governmet policies to recognize that disabled folks have needs, talents, and abilities like everyone else. That only exists because many people got together, enacted free speech, and created public awareness and government response.

Handicap accessible buildings, parking, is here because laws were passed due to citizens protesting and lobbying congress, as another commenter has pointed out. This has only happened recently.

I find it so interesting that foreigners think when we smile and ask each other how are you doing that it's fake. I've worked in customer service for over 20 years and it's not fake. Yeah we do not have enough sick days vacation days I completely agree with that

Because a lot of it is fake. I guess it depends on where you live, but in the south there's a lot of insincere politeness. People smile only because they don't want to be rude, they ask how are you but don't even wait for a response because they never cared in the first place

When I visited Russia in the late 90's, people told me that Americans "smile too much". And many people said they thought it was because "they probably are trying to sell you something".

Your family and children are so lucky to have you as a daily presence in their lives. I think it is so important for people who love both Russia and America to speak up right now when thing have grown suddenly tense in the world. And I am not just talking about international affairs, I am also referring to the pandemic and long periods of disruption and fear. Do not underestimate what a gem you are. Yes please tell us more about your experiences. Now let me tell how I think of your husbands ice obsessions. I was born and raised in Florida. It is very hot and humid here. That is why I gravitate to ice and ices when I have a cold or fever. My parents were both born in northern Spain. They gravitate to soups and warm drinks when they get sick. i think we are all trying to balance our body temperatures when we feel sick. In addition I also love feeling "taken care of" when I get sick. So the first thing I do is get a couple of chicken thighs and chorizos and make a brothy vermecelli soup that my mother always made for us when we got sick. We called it "Fideos", but it is nothing like what the Mexicans call Fideos. Ours is a very gentle soup and always makes me feel like I am back in my mothers loving arms. So there are many things that people get great joy and healing from. PS I just noticed your video was from 2020. You may not find this comment now, but I hope you do. We need more people like you in the world today.

Elle's Reviews Yes! People work themselves to death in America. The counties I’ve been to in Europe either close very early or they close for a period of time and then re-open in the evening. It’s very different from some of our stores that are open 24/7 in the USA 😜

She's been living in the US for 14 years, so her English is of course fluent. Her English is very perfect and correct - but I still find her a bit difficult to understand because of her slow way of speaking and her constant whispering - as if she's telling you a secret. I'd prefer a more normal way of talking. And besides, I don't find her small diffrencies between Russia and America that exiting. I believe that she should have thought things over before she started to record her video.

Pregnant women (in America at least) generally wait until they are out of their first trimester to tell “everyone”. A lot of women tell both sets of their parents, and maybe their siblings or very very close friends before that. It’s simply because most miscarriages happen in the first trimester, so if you do end up having one, then you only have to tell the select group of people that knew you were pregnant, and can deal with it a bit more privately.

Ben Andersson don’t know how the svensk are but the Norwegians are very serious about personal space and don’t engage in social pleasantries as much. I actually love their attitude and culture. That's your own fault. You don't go looking for the good. Most people are stuck on autopilot and don't even see the stars at night or the sun rise in the morning. People are so focused on what everyone else is doing. Take a trip. Get out and see things. Take a walk. Ride in the passenger seat, I love that last one. You WILL see things you never saw before. "The Gift of Gab" that's a person's ability to literally talk to anyone, anywhere, at any time. My mom is really good at it and insists that it's a helpful skill when trying to create business connections. 10 years ago she ended up talking to a lady who rents the cabana next to ours in Hawaii and they spend hours just chatting when we go on vacation.

I share openly. We went through tragedy when my husband died suddenly when I was 41 and we have 5 kids. I mentioned it on a comment and a new widow spoke up, telling me her husband had died a month before and she was completely alone because her only relative, a sister, lived out of state. I got her involved with a widow group I found so helpful because I know that hell and didn't think I would survive. She made many friends and has a lot of support from others who knew what it's like. 6 months later I found out she had written a suicide note to mail her sister just that morning and was planning on taking her own life to join her husband when she saw my comment. Every struggle we have, others are also living. They may have advice which could give us a hand when we need it most, or we could be the ones sending them a needed life vest.

As a cashier myself, the conversation is a way to fill the sometimes awkward gaping silence between the beeps of the register. It just doesn't feel right to not engage with the customers.

I hate the small talk, and some people aren't interested, but many customers will complain that you're rude if you don't engage with them fully. I've even had older women complain to my manager because I didn't greet them with a smile at the door while I was actively ringing someone up at my register. some folks really want their hand held through the whole process of just shopping at a grocery store or eating at a restaurant and it's really annoying.

The conversation isn't meant to hold the line. It's meant to be pleasant. There are certain cues you pick up on that dictate the interaction, as with any other social situation. If you're more interested in using self checkouts, be my guest. They're there for the convenience of the customer. You're also more than welcome to be frustrated if the line isn't moving swiftly. Maybe try a different line?

Every country disappoints people who live there. When you get out there and live in other countries, you realize the self-loathing is pointless. Every country has their sh*t. We’re not unique for that. We just get all the scrutiny and bad press so it seems like we’re the only one.

The fact that you’re disappointed sometimes in this paradise (in comparison to other places) shows why it is great! You want it to be better you try to make it better and when it goes against your vision of what you want you’re disappointed because you know the potential to hit you’re desires here. That privilege we have here seems normal but isn’t in most places. My wife is from Rio and Brazil is like the 5th most populated place through her and my travels I am constantly reminded of things I thought of as everyday normal aren’t everywhere. Pretty eye opening or me.

I feel like non-USA people don't always understand the "how are you" thing - when I say that I do really want to know and care, even if it's a negative answer! Even a few word answer of "not so well" or "really stressed" and I genuinely care and I can commiserate or wish you a better day!

It would confuse me as a brit. I wouldnt ask or be asked by anyone other than someone i know because i genuinely don't think the average person wants to know. Even then a lot it gets asked as a 'time filler' when you know for a fact anything other than okay, not too bad, good etc would not be appreciated.. imagine if every 10people you met 1gave you really miserable news from their lives? (We already willingly tend to share joyous new much more easily its the bad news people lie about to strangers)

Yes!! And it’s a good way to stay hydrated/get sugar when your stomach hurts. It’s slow enough melting to not make you sick so it “stays down”.

Yes, but it's terrible for you! It takes so much energy for your body to stay warm enough, energy that's no longer being used for your immune system when you need it the most.

Steam feels better. Warm steam feels best. Popsicles and ice cream feels good for a minute, numbing you up, steam feels better for a whole night or day, soothing the irritation. Hydration is key. Drink clear liquids all day long. Room temperature is best IMO but warm is good too.

I live in South Texas near the border and we’re overwhelmingly Mexican or Mexican American here. Sometimes the cashiers will tell you their personal life stories LOL. There is a lady working at my local grocery store who talks to me about her cats and her struggles with menopause 😂 My mom is a Mexican immigrant and she’ll talk to everybody and usually walks out of her doctor appointments with recommendations for herbal remedies or recipes because she ends up talking to the other elderly ladies there haha. People are frequently chatting in the lobby of my tiny post office. We talk a lot. My dad is Cuban and they are even worse! They’re quite loud and it often sounds like they’re fighting/arguing but it’s just the way they talk.

Yeah many of the issues she addressed here are also in India, people here in India don't share about their days or care to ask about our days, people do not smile at each other a lot and people who share their mental health or vulnerabilities are considered weird and weak ,so there are times when I look at American society and I m like wow I wish we had that here too,so u guys are definitely granted I think

I’m from Northern Ireland and people smile and say hello, they are friendly (mostly lol) but when I went to California I noticed how extremely friendly people were and as bad as it sounds it does seem insincere when you’re not used to it. I was also so confused by the “how you doing?” “How’s it going?” when people greet you, like do I say hello? do I answer their question? Do I run away? 😂 lol

The "casual dress" in America is a relatively new phenomenon, last 20 years or so. I remember dressing up in the 70's and 80's to go out to eat or to pick up people at the airport. Yes, dress up to just pick up someone from the airport. It is a sign of respect to yourself to look your best, not to mention being a sign of respecting others.

Crazy how fast American culture has changed . If you back a couple decades further into the 40s and 50s, everyone wore suits and hats! I’ve always thought it looked nice to be honest.

What really irks me is that a lot of people wear shorts to church. Shorts! My mom always said you should wear your nicest clothes as a sign of respect. If these kids can dress up for work they can certainly dress at least as nicely for two hours every Sunday morning.

Instead of asking "How're you going?" or "How are you?" when I interact briefly with others, I am trying to say "It's good to see you!" or "I hope your day is a good one!" or something of the sort. I find this helps convey positivity and kindness but doesn't hold the emptiness that the former questions do. Why ask someone how they are if you don't have the time or energy to listen?

In 2019 a survey was conducted in Russia - 53% of young people 18-24yo wanted to emigrate to civilized countries (EU, USA, Canada, Australia etc). I am from Russia and I know what I'm talking about. Post-communist slave society/Putin's dictatorship is a disaster for the economy and politics of the country. Young people have no prospects for high standards of living here.

Most of the things you said about USA like "smiling all the time, saying sorry, talking to the cashier and sharing our lives with random people" sound to me so normal because here in Brazil we are so used to do this stuff. We become friends with people who are waiting on the line in a bank, with the doorman of the building we live (it's very common to see people making a cake at home and saving a piece for the doorman, for example), with everyone. If one day you have the chance to travel to Brazil, you'll be amazed hahaha.

I feel like the U.S. is fairly middle of the road in terms of friendliness based on what I've heard of some other cultures. We're not as physically affectionate as some cultures are. Their greetings and whatnot are far more intimate than I'm comfortable with.

I took a week break off from work 1 time in 3 years and everyone bitched and complained and made me feel so guilty and then that said person took a week off a couple weeks later. I call in so little I don't even know how to do it and always struggle calling in when I need to. and when I did call in the last time I got yelled at for doing it wrong and not being at work and felt really bad about it. Though my fiances sister was in the hospital and we had to trade in our car bc the one we had kept breaking down and we couldn't drive it anymore. so I just don't even call in anymore.

I think whats different here from many cultures is a class system, or lack of one. Normal Americans don't look down on the house keeper, the repairman, the construction worker, the fast food worker and such people. We all remember our first job and appreciate other peoples position and efforts. Naturally the ultra rich may see an expendable zombie there only to serve the rich. But when you talk to one of these workers you may hear of the dangerous trip they had to make to get here and they are so happy to be here. My mother came from Austria and my wife came from Laos. Both were bombed by the Americans...but both adapted to becoming Americans.
