Fully agree regarding sat nav’s when towing. We now research our routes in advance keeping to main roads wherever possible even if it isn’t the most direct option and use a large scale road atlas with little stickers to help keep us on track. Keep up the good work.

We just bought the Avtex Tourer Two from the Caravan and Motorhome Club. Expensive yes, but it is a one off payment, which includes updates for software, mapping and live traffic. So far, I'm very impressed. It's not just for the routing, but it has alerts for speed cameras, steep hills, sharp bends, upcoming junctions, weather events and high winds warnings. Voice control, points of interest and so on. It displays messages from my phone, although I don't use to make or recieve calls. It's just so useful to have on even when you don't need the routing. The motorhome doesn't have a built in sat nav, so this covers a lot of the things that built in units would do. Sounds like I'd better do a follow up in use review?

We use the Avtex Tourer one CAMC sat nav. We bought it when we bought our 8ft wide caravan, as I didn’t want to end up stuck down a road we couldn’t fit through. We’ve used it now for 12 months and other than a couple of silly diversions when motorways have been shut, it’s been spot on. Cheers Stuart.

We use GM or Waze and look over the route prior to leaving. The issue we find is a lot of sites are not off main roads and a few miles down country lanes so you will have a problem where you meet an on-coming vehicle. This is typical in some areas of Wales where roads are tight. Don't know how 8ft wide caravans manage but that's another story. 😁

The best way to use a sat nav is to know when to ignore it, when traveling in Europe it's best to follow destinations rather than rely totally on your sat nav, I found this method is better when travelling via Paris with lanes going off in all directions and the sat nav going into meltdown
@CaravanVlogger4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Yes wise words, we’ve had a couple of near misses near Paris 😱Graham

Interesting point. In France we use Google Maps and Via Michelin but we basically check everything it says to make sure suitable. Then go on Maps/Streetview and find to make sure looks reasonable.
@RollingwithTheRobsons4 жыл бұрын
Actually as you say that. When I was an idiot and left keys at a campsite and had to travel back. I went off at pay station (In france) thought about doing U turn to get back on motorway travelled around for 10 minutes and took the route. Then got back to SAME place I was at the starting point just pointing the other way.

Thanks Graham, we always plan our route on our Apple maps and stick to that. Funnily enough the best place to use a satnav is in Europe. They seem to stick to the larger roads there instead of here. Too many narrow lanes here!

Thanks for watching. Not tried apple maps. Yes I agree Europe is a lot easier. Graham

On Copilot you can now go into settings and tell it to avoid secondary roads and local streets. Obviously, it will use these if there's not option. I'm going away in the motorhome soon, I'll see if that makes a difference.
@coops12214 жыл бұрын
I’ve been tempted by the copilot app. For now all I do is look over my route suggested by the sat nav with the satellite overlay so I can get a sense of the roads it’ll be taking me on, then take a view from there and sometimes I plan an alternative route and find myself having to force myself to ignore the sat nav until it gets me back on the route which is difficult . But waze is my go to app. No ideal solution, just a least worst.
@Tarmac_Warrior4 жыл бұрын
always look at google maps for overall travel and what roads you should be on then use satnav and ignore where the sat nav tries too take short cuts or get around traffic etc

Sat navs are great, tend to use our one in the car as a general guide, then use site directions and street view etc prior to travelling. Been caught out once or twice. Only towed in France once - Before the age of sat nav, it became a little sketchy but made it using map.

I use a Garmin Camper 770. No problems with it so far. I have the Copilot app on my phone. It originally had a motorhome ( I have a caravan) feature but they removed it when the caravan version came out. I refuse to buy their app again to get back a feature that I originally purchased. One funny story for us was heading back through Rouen on the way to Calais and my TomTom froze. We spent half an hour going up and down the same length of dual carriage way as my navigator tried to find interpret the map. Apparently my style of encouragement did not help the situation!

SatNav is a nightmare. We’ve used CoPilot, with caravan profile (that has a motorhome icon). I wished I’d have used the ‘avoid roads with grass growing down the middle’ option. There’s still a bit of our Caravan in Wales 😉. Nothing wrong with consulting the Ordnance Survey before a tow.

Hi. Advice needed. I’m looking on where/what to purchase co pilot. You said it cost £9.99 for a year. I can see on Apple store the caravan 1 year is £28.99 but I do seeActiveTraffic for £9.99. Do I need to purchase both? Thanks
@CaravanVlogger4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Yes you’d need to purchase the app, which is a one off payment. £9.99 is for a year of traffic, which you don’t have to have..Hope that helps. Graham

I've got an XGody lorry sat nav which I bought of E.Bay for less than £40, it can be programmed with size of MH I've had it for 3 years it's not sent me on wrong roads or low bridges, previously I had TomTom with updated map for MH cost over £80 if needed to update map it cost same again it was OK but at times sent me on roads not really suitable for MH.

Great topic Graham, I use the Tom Tom go camper absolutely brilliant but watched the video that Andrew Ditton uploaded about the best route planning. Found the suggested sites very good . Think the new avtex looks very big and clumsy and also you have to remember where you can safely mount it to the window screen without causing your obstruction and view to the road ahead. Think as you suggested maybe put in dimensions as if you was a HGV ?
@Venomator.4 жыл бұрын
Great topic, well delivered Graham, sort of... 🤔 🤪 Waze is also my go-to SatNav in the car only and often used in conjunction with the Volvo in-built SatNav! When towing I use Co-Pilot, although I did not bother with traffic, just seems pointless to me until they are truly ‘live’... 🤷🏼♂️ I have been considering an Avtec though, simply because of the planned tripping we have going on this year, but just cannot make up my mind if it’s worth it. Mrs V is always keeping tabs on our progress in our EuroMap book, especially in 🇫🇷... 🗺 Cheers for entertaining us again, Rog... 👍🏻 😉 🐍

Old Poshcats Tight-fist refused to buy another Sat-Nav following bad experiences in the UK and France. The jury is out on these apps that take dimensions of the vehicle. Currently Google Maps (free version) and a good old fashioned AA paper map (£7.99) does the job. The £400 has been spent on something else (don’t ask what) 😲😂 Trev
