Idk if it's just me but it's really refreshing and grounding seeing these 90s and early 2000s shows where people look like regular people. Like they're of course very good looking people, but their aesthetics aren't as edited, primped, and smoothed as we see today. The whole IG baddie everyone got the same plastic surgery vibe isn't as strong. Of course issues like the pressure to be thin were on another level (and may return soon unfortunately). But facial perfection wasn't hyperfixated upon even on video like it is today. They look like people.

I have one family member who, every time this show comes up, always says, "You know, none of those women are GORGEOUS; I don't get it." Beyond the fact that I think they were all pretty in their own ways, I also think them looking like very-pretty-but-still-everyday women was kind of the point. You don't have to be Claudia Schiffer to get a date.

@@kierralovestv I think it might be because of the "homewrecker" label. And, we do not really know if the guy was punished because we only see it from Samatha's persspective. I think it boils down to the wife using her influenece to make sure Samatha wont be able to show up at places she socializes in so she wont have to see her, and a punishement as a "homewrecker" type? Besides, Carrie slept with a married Big later on and most people around her called her out on it like Charlotte. Only Samantha did not judge her harshly since she had that experience before. We do know that Big face consequences from Natasha at least when the affair came to light.

This was aired a couple of years after the Monica Lewinsky thing happened.This is exactly how people treat women that screw powerful men, or at the very least treated them at the time because "evil little homewrecker sluts". SATC was an update on the show "The Golden Girls," using modern, NYC women in their 30s. You still had the promiscuous one (Blanche and Sam); the sarcastic, practical one (Dorothy and Miranda); the traditional, naive one (Charlotte and Rose) and then the rest (Sophia and Carrie). LOL. "The Golden Girls" was also the first show to do the "four single people being friends" set-up in sitcoms, which the likes of "Seinfeld" and "Living Single" went on to emulate in the 90s. "The Golden Girls" was quite the pioneer, revolutionary show, especially when it came to women and LGBTQ+ rights.

I used to STAN Miranda/Steve, but now that I’m adult and watched the series back, it’s like Carrie made her feel guilty for not wanting Steve, and wanting more from her relationship which Carrie was not requiring herself. Therefore, I feel like she put pressure on Miranda to choose Steve when Steve was actually not a good partner for Miranda at least. Steve cheated on her. Steve wanted to be babied by her but also wanted her respect. Doesn’t make sense.

Honestly Carrie is the reason I learned to stop obsessively straightening my hair. I wouldn't be found dead with my natural hair up to my early twenties. I have very similar hair structure and I kept fighting it. And when I saw it in a TV show I was like "if SJP can walk around like that and feel good about it, so should I". I still like streightening my hair. But I am also comfortable about just letting it air dry and be curly. ^^ People were actually amazed when they first saw me and asked how did I get my curls to look so natural, what curler did I use and stuff. ;)

For sure. I did double check and diaphragms use spermicide to prevent pregnancy and is non hormonal. I'm fairly certain smoking increases the risks in all types of hormonal birth control most heart related but also blood clots which can be fatal. I think if Carrie was in the market for birth control today she'd opt for the copper IUD.
@kierralovestv2 жыл бұрын
@@crazy4orlando2 it was also common in general for alot of 90s shows to use it like Friends’ Monica Geller. She doesn’t smoke so that’s where the confusion is.

@@kierralovestv fair enough. Some women react badly to hormonal birth control but it is odd as to why diaphragms would be mentioned on TV instead of just a regular pill. It could also be that a diaphragm is preferred if you are not sure you will be having sex frequently, 3 or more times a week for months at a time. This would be better if you have longish stretches between sex and don't want to use a condom.

hey, hope you’re okay, i love this series of yours im so glad you’re doing all the seasons, I would love if you did an analysis of each character (esp the main four obvi). I was listening to a podcast and someone said that the show had a Tyler perry type of way to punish women, esp samantha and miranda, when they have something for them, they always get put down/humiliated in some way. And even though the writers created the show, it has a lot of undertone of misogyny, esp towards samantha, they claim they wanted to create a single women that enjoys sex and doesn’t feel ashamed abt it and they did it but at the same they made her a caricature, she most of the times looks so over the top she’s ridiculous, and we as an audience kinda rolled with it and loved her for that but at some instance you can see the creators kinda didn’t understand her character themselves idk if I make any sense at all lmaoo I have sm to say of your videos bc you make sm good points

I mean I feel like not every episode needs to come with a lesson or character development for each of the girls; sometimes life is kinda random and the episodes that feel like ‘feeler’ for the girls usually end up being fun I think it’s also a product of it’s time in the sense that shows back then we’re like 20 something episodes per season (SATC had about 18 eps per season) but now most show have seasons that are only 8 or 10 episodes long, so they don’t have time for feeler episodes, they don’t have time to let characters just BE, it’s always something that has to advance the plot or whatever; and frankly I do really enjoy when my characters are just hanging out, it’s fun

I do like charlotte. But i also feel like she is a huge hypocrite. To me it seems like she is dating the most men (after Samantha), i swear she is dating a new one every episode (currently i just finished season 2). Which is fine obviously, but she really shouldn’t judge Samantha just because it’s often mainly sex for her/ they have different intentions
@ripwednesdayadams7 ай бұрын
I’m a millennial and only learned about diaphragms from Carrie using it on SATC. Aside from Samantha, the show is weirdly prudish for a show that is supposed to be about sex. Especially Carrie- shes supposed to be a “sexpert”/sex columnist ffs! 😂 There are a lot of valid reasons to dislike Carrie- she’s a narcissist and a bad friend. But I also think that people don’t like Carrie because she’s a reflection of things they don’t like about themselves. 24:19 I just rewatched this episode with Charlotte and the pastry chef. I feel like he did try to convey to Charlotte that his interests didn’t have any bearing on his sexuality. I remember he said something like “I’m a 30 something pastry chef from Chelsea- if I were gay then I’d be gay.” 33:41 It is insane to me that Carrie went back to Big after he did all that. Like why would you want to be with a man who has made it clear over and over that you are not the one?? Adding insult to injury, Carrie asked him to tell her she was the one and he couldn’t do it when they broke up before their trip. But he had no issue telling Natasha she was the one. The man didn’t bother to tell her that Paris fell through, he fell in love then got engaged to a 25yo after about 5 min and didn’t contact Carrie once through all of that.

For men who completely remove hair from that area, it can sometimes stick the skin that that holds the twins onto the leg. For men who don't remove or shave hair from that area, it can happen that thehair string is entangled with other hair trings and it is pulling it which makes it hurt really badly!!! For men who just lawn the mown, it can happen that the smaller hair strings got stuck in the fabric of the underwear and it also hurts pretty badly. Some other times the guy down there is just in a bad position and it also really hurts. So basically, is because of pain or discomfort

6:00-6:25 I (29) asked my husband (43) about this and his answer was it was the 90s and it was out of the norm for people who handnt previously decided they wanted to be unmarried/long term single to not be married or at least engaged in your 20s. He said he and others more so moved with motions of things more. Back then you didn’t realize it but one of the main reasons he and others got married is because everyone was else was doing it in their mid/late twenties with their long term partners and it was what you did - and definitely what parents expected- if you didn’t have a reason to break up and were dating a long time. So it was easier to get married back then but obviously easier to regret it long term and get divorced. We’re more stingy and selective with who we’ll marry now and I think that comes with benefits Regardless dating in your 30s is still harder than in the 20s according to the women I know. Not as taboo as in the 80s-early 00s but still with more difficulties

Had Carrie been taking the pill, they would’ve had to be really creative and had the girls see it on her counter or falling out of her medicine cabinet or something. Plus it’s a 30 day thing. These diaphragm sounds like a one time use thing and there is the plot.

As far as the IUD, I am 60 and at 19 after have my second child the Dr suggested it. This is my opinion only, it can be a good way of preventing a pregnancy only if you don't want to get pregnant! However what the doctors don't tell you is, after you have it removed please, please, please have another form of birth control. And make you do it before the removal of the IUD! I got pregnant right it was removed, I had a tubal pregnancy which can be deadly. I almost died, and I lost the baby! So be careful, listen to your body and don't allow anyone to tell you something that isn't true for you! Also I believe what you showed was a diafram, the IUD is smaller and thin! Love your videos and please watch Charmed!!!

They bring up the diaphragm on Seinfeld & Friends too & I didn’t know what they were talking about,(I just assumed it was an inserted BC) til I was in my late 20s & googled it

I don't know if this helps, but I think that Miranda's panic attack was singular and based on a specific event, not an anxiety disorder which would require more treatment. If Miranda had no history of anxiety, then it would pretty much be a one- and -done at the time esp... It's so nice that people are not slut shaming. When I was young in the 80's, with an alcohol problem, it was not this way. And it really hurt. Well, us 80's 'bad girls' walked so future girls could run. And its refreshing. Enjoying your channel!

I was in my early twenties when this show was on, I loved it. It was the first time I saw women talking about female topics without having to constantly apologize. Looking back now, it's as if it was made right on the cusp of a big shift in culture. The way you spoke about anxiety, I've suffered with anxiety from birth, but it just was as if you were defective or it was shameful to admit. I never even thought to talk to a doctor about it until my late 20's. The age thing! Being in your 30's isn't old, but that's how women were REALLY made to feel. Maybe I've just gotten older, mellowed out but I also see my nieces and how they talk about certain topics and it was so different just a short time ago. I don't think I even had an email address when this show started!😅

maybe also because back then the economy was still booming so people getting houses for decent prices, having normal wages and starting to raise a family at a younger age made 30 feel older since 30 year olds already hit all the milestones... nowadays at 30 you're often stuck renting, shitty pay, no money to start a family etc. etc. so you just keep doing young adult things instead

I was looking for SATC analisys on here and I'm glad I cound you! ❤ I also agree about the age debate, I'm also in my 30s and I do still consider myself relativilly young 😅 I Lso do think they all kinda look their age, and frankly they also look their age in AJLT as in they don'f have that IG filter like look

Love watching your analysis of these first two seasons! So in depth and detailed. One thing I will say is some of these story lines did not age well, like the guy who dresses as Samantha and the “gay” straight/“straight” gay guy. It’s amazing to see how much has changed in the 20 years since this aired. Can’t wait to see what’s to come next! Season 2 has so many great episodes but I think overall season 3 had the best story line overall 😀
@tyhbvft1218 Жыл бұрын
I think the choice for the diaphram wasn't necessarily to inform or anything, it was just to set up the conflict so that the others had a chance to ask "Who are you seeing?". While birth control is necessary, neither the pill nor the diaphram helps with STD protection and this show was filmed really close to the peak of the AIDS epidemic so I would assume that if their intent was to inform they wouldn't go about it that way. I also agree that the writers could be older therefore not up to date with birth control choices but honestly, the choice for the diaphram in the show had always seemed to me to be a writing and plot decision rather than having the intent to make any statement or give information.
@tyhbvft1218 Жыл бұрын
An episode I would take as an example to have the intent to inform is the episode where Sam needs to get an STD check up. The focus isn't birth control but STDs and in that 1 min section of samanthas consult with the doctor allows you to hear a lot of choices lol. Had there been an intent to inform in the episode with the diaphram, i would expect the conversation to be more focused i guess.
