We're looking at about 100 million dollars worth of junked S-400s, I suppose. Kinda hilarious, the very new Kinzhal was meant to defeat Patriot and is being beaten by Patriot. The very new S-400 is supposed to defend against ballistic missiles and it gets taken out by ballistic missiles. Meanwhile, the Gepard was made half a century ago to combat slow-moving helicopters with a radar silhouette of a flying barn and it does fantastically against small fast moving drones made of plastic.
@themetalninja810228 күн бұрын
Going from the conflict I think its safe to assume that we can see more Gepard's finally being built and sold on to multiple countries. Definitely one of the standout weapons of the war so far along with Storm Shadows/Scalp, HIMARS and Lancets (credit where it is due sadly)

@h.a.988028 күн бұрын
@@themetalninja8102 It'd be crazy if the Gepard made a comeback due to its performance in Ukraine... but not entirely surprising. But I think Rheinmetall would rather try to sell the newer system, the Oerlikon Skyranger on a Boxer vehicle. That system can also carry missiles and even a laser can be added. Could be a really effective system to keep the skies of Europe and its partners clean. Storm Shadow and HIMARS are definetly the big winners of this war. As a German, I am glad the Gepard performed so well and helped protect thousands of people throughout this war, but Storm Shadow/Scalp and HIMARS have had such a mindblowingly huge effect on the battlefield, they are in a league of their own. Another thing's for certain: Sales for the T-90 and the S-400 won't be going up after the war lol.

Even if the airbase was cleared before the hit, it did more than just that: Unplanned increased fuel consumption, stress for pilots and ground crews, heigthened follow up maintenance for the flying material, hit to the morale of the stationed soldiers, opening more/better air-corridors for follow-up missile/drone strikes, depending on where the flying material was transferred to -> stress for the ground crews, technicians, quartermasters, etc etc there, changing supply routes, longer flights to the frontlines and who knows what else.

It's very strange that Russian didn't spread out the 4 launch vehicles. You'd figure they have the network technology to put launchers in the same battery at a considerable distance apart, at least far enough that one missile strike with a tungsten fragmintation warhead couldn't take them all out. I believe that is SOP for Patriot batteries.

@Keldor31428 күн бұрын
There's an entire catagory of anti-air defense missiles that are designed to home in on the radio waves emitted by radars, so switching off the radar in the middle of an attack isn't as crazy as it seems. That said, a more likely scenario is simply that the Russians had depleted their supply of missiles at that base shooting at other drones and cruise missiles, and Ukraine had noticed the air defence in that sector going quiet and decided to try their luck at hitting them while they might be unable to defend themselves.

I'm trying to figure out (not that it matters) if Russia is trying to take advantage of the utter disgrace of the US House or if this is a last shot mass offensive. They've never seemed concerned about manpower losses, but it's at extremes now. There was a Newsweek article that quoted a UK source, I believe, that a fair number of Baltic and Pacific Fleet ships and submarines had been removed from patrol duties and idled because their crews were sent to Ukraine as infantry. Germany did that as part of their last stand. Trained naval crews are not something you just pluck off the street or a prison. Maybe it's both. Or Putin just wants something to brag about during his parade.
