Screaming doesn't always have to be connected to like an evil character in an opera. That would be more fitting for a band like Opeth and those types of screams. In this band screaming is used more as a device of intense emotion, as usually when people scream in life it's used to show how intense they are feeling with their emotions to get a point across.

I wish you guys had listened to more Periphery before hearing this song. It's probably my favorite, and I completely appreciate the power and intensity of the screams, even in a song that starts off so beautifully. It's still beautiful, just in a different way, and I think screaming is in order when you know what the song is about. It's supposed to be from Earth's perspective, if it could tell us what it feels about all of the things we are doing to it. This stuff takes time to digest, so it's totally understandable that you might not like a song on the first listen, but I wanted you guys to be blown away like I was the first time I heard it. I'll never forget being in the car that Sunday morning after the bike ride, and that explosion half way through just leaving me stunned. Being familiar with all of their earlier work, this song felt like another level. When you guys listen to older stuff, and you hear the screaming and growling in songs like Stranger Things and Ragnarok (that one took me quite a while to get), try to imagine him singing it normally. It just wouldn't work.

They’ve reviewed about three songs now and they seem to grasp general gist of them pretty well, this song in particular took me a few more listens than usual to really grasp the meaning and context of the lyrics ( and I’ve been listening since the clear ep days lol)

@@JoseLopez-st3xz That's just not enough for this band. They have so many different sounding songs, and they haven't listened to anything like Ji, Make Total Destroy, or Prayer Position. Really hard, djenty kind of songs. And those are the harder ones to "get". I mean, the first two songs they heard were Lune and Absolomb, which have pretty much no screaming.

Tyler Rogers agreed, they need to listen to some of their heavy songs, like ragnarok or even stranger things would be a good start. Periphery is my favorite band and has been for ever now. What they can do musically is magical, and I love how it’s pure art, they don’t care if people like it, they like what they released.

lol the high screams absolutely were needed though...that part was the most important section of the message of this song and he needed to convey that. Not to mention the screams he did there are *extremely* hard to do. Pure talent. It wasn't "stereotypical" whatsoever. There are a very select few in this genre who can even pull that off.

I get your initial reaction as a first listen that the screams are rather jarring, but the vocals switch in intensity to show frustration. “We’re going under” is referring to the fact that we’ve literally brought our planet to it’s breaking point. Tides are literally rising, glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, and we’re likely going to exhaust many natural resources in the next decades due to sheer indifference of our worlds health. I kinda relate it to how people shit on the disturbed cover of “Sound of silence”. The original was more uneasy and reserved, when speaking a warning of technology and its effects on IRL communication. Disturbed got flack because their rendition was “too bombastic” or extra. But thats what they aimed for. They conveyed the anger that the warning portrayed in the original fell on deaf ears and chose to this time shove it front and center to hopefully make it resonate that time around. For this reason I believe Periphery’s use of screams on this track are completely justified and not just “riding a musical trend”. As always I enjoy watching your reactions and getting your opinions because it occasionally spawns great dialogue! P.s Check out Architects- Gone with the wind That song literally brings me to tears anytime it plays (dedicated to the bands late guitarist who died of cancer)

Bands like these, they're artists first. They split with their old record label and started their own to pursue what music they wanted to make. Screams here, and in any of their music are not for the sake of having screams in the song, they're used to convey a message. Ofcourse one doesn't have to like it, but it's not just used for the sake of it. Sam Carter, the vocalists of Architects doesn't really use low screams on albums for example. In an interview he stated that someone who was very emotional would use their voice in a low manner, so why should he in songs when he's trying to convey emotion. Screams are very interesting to me, and wether I like them or not is about their purpose in a song, which I find there is quite a bit of in this one.

I loved periphery and I'm glad I listened to them from the beginning of the Demos and P1 and grew with them and still continue to grew with them. The best part is that they never care what the fans like or what they want, they play what they want, how they want and that's what will make them stay around and keep creating master pieces.

I agreed the first time I listened to it, and its why Satellites was not a song I cared for, for a good while. This is what happens when your first foray into Periphery is Lune. *Speaking regarding song about the incessant march of humanity towards the destruction of our ONLY home through pure greed despite our knowledge of it* Rich: “This one for me was desperation. But I don’t think that was needed.” You clearly understand the song, yet you don’t seem to understand that you understand it. The desperation is the point. You don’t think we need to wake up and start looking after the planet desperately? This is a true rarity in that you have a song which not only communicates its message through the lyrics perfectly, but through the texture of the instruments and vocal styles. Sit down and listen a full album of theirs. Maybe then we’ll talk. Thanks for the LOLs though.

Currently my favorite Periphery song. The diversity in song makes it even more powerful, complex and satisfying, as its beautifully and masterfully done. Also, Periphery and other bands in this unique/technical, djent/progressive metal genre, requires the listener to "graduate up to" in order to appreciate it. As a musician myself, that has come easy. And this album is by far the best Periphey album to date. It shows that Misha and his crew took the time off to make it such. Well done.

But personally given that the song is the earth telling us like: why the fuck are you destroying me? I compare them to the band Staind from Boston, Mass. Compare Staind’s albums Dysfunction vs Break the Cycle! One is angry screaming while the latter is controlled Alternative Rock of the early 2,000’s. When Periphery is kind of that Alternative Rock Genre they are next level.....butt, when Spencer Sotelo “Screams” in the Djent Genre it’s like night and day (IMO). Rich, have you considered that you didn't like the screams, but it's just you as human not wanting to know what "the Earth" or "a human" wants to say? I think that you can find two subjects who try to talk to us, either the Earth or human. This songs shames us, as humans, and it makes us feel uncomfortable. Kel felt it more like I did - scream has a message, and the subject wants us to realise, to wake up. I don't think this song had a choice in artistic expression, because subject couldn't just "beautifully" convey the message about "going under". The subject kicks us in the face with the sudden transition and screams because subject thinks we deserve it and/or need it. I took some harm-related phrases from the lyrics, "Left in the hands of the living, I burn The mountain cracks The plain will split in two and swallow where we live The rising heat and the melting ice The land we rape It's suicide" Burn, drown, torn apart, it's suicide - this is torture and at the end there's only death. Subject shouts, wanting humans to stop, and you certainly scream during torture. Rich mentioned the word 'desperation', this is what this scream meant for me, and it had to be the strongest scream Spencer could belt out. (and oh my, Spencer's vocals are fab on this track and whole P IV). 10/10 would like to be kicked in the face again. ;-) #hailstan

There is nothing stereo-typical about these vocals. The looks on your faces when the beautiful and the brutal collide is priceless. Stop analysing the content and wether it fits with what you define as good music. The people that normally do these types of videos are vocal coaches, vocalists or band members. If you're just fans, great, but its not going to hold a lot of stock with anyone if you don't have some sort of genuine reason for your opinion. I have played in bands for over 12 years on guitar, bass and drums and before I shredded my voice, vocals as well. I can hear what Spencer is doing with those vocals and how high his range is. If you just think its screaming for the sake of screaming, this medium of music assessment is definitely not for you. Maybe check out someone like Bethroars for a professionals opinion. Might give you some perspective on how these "first reaction" clips should be. Otherwise you're just listening to a song and telling people why you do or don't like it, with no authority to back it up. Personal opinion though.

I respect your opinion. I did not like screams at first either, but I soon found that it adds an intensity that can't be replaced. It also and in dynamics to the song to break it up and keep it interesting. I feel it served it purpose, and he exploded with the highs after to really open it up. This song, for me, shows the desperation that we are in with this planet and how we are.killing it and no one cares. Some intensity is needed in a song like this. I loved it. It's only smiles is another great song about losing his sister and it cuts me to the core. I would highly recommend it.

Well its a valid opinion, the screams are not for all ears, but you just have to give it a try, just listen more the track. I think in this song like he said the screams were meant to be like something desperate or desperation, wich i think fits perfectly on the song because its about our planet and global warming and all that stuff! So yeah its cool, Im a big fan but dont´get mad, respect all opions, just maybe you just need to listen more time this song, haha and I loved the pepper metaphor. Kudos for you guys! Peace!

I believe his vocal choice is to display the severity and importance of his message. I mean, it is technically the most important topic there is. As a dream theater/rush, fan I would think you would be interested in more more more.... More talent.... More power.... More passion, but I do understand everyone had their own perspective on things. 10 years ago, I might have agreed with you but as I've progressed as a music listener, I've grown to find that this song is delivered perfectly. I do have my limits with the harsh vocals too though. Still a great reaction though. Cheers Y'all!!

Personally where I have trouble with Periphery generally is not the screaming parts but the clean parts. Where I always feel like I have to give it a few listenings before I can appreciate the song cringe-free. I don't like spencer's poppy clean vocals, which quite honestly, although he's very skilled, to me, sounds more like something I would expect to hear from teenage punk rock bands like Simple Plan or some other crap, than in a metal band. I actually like this, as she says it here, "wall of sound" they create when the whole thing just falls on you like a ton of bricks. I personally would've done away with some of the clean parts I found a bit cliché or "commercial", but not with the heavier scream parts. Of course, as for any opinion on a piece of music, all of this is just that: opinions.

I love periphery, love the screams and the clean vocals, but I found this music an odd mix of both some times. I guess that I would enjoy it more without so much screams, but I continue liking this way too. I guess its more easy for me to like a song entirely screams, or almost entirely clean with few screams to highlight some emotions. Dunno

you obviously dont listen to periphery enough or that genre cause the screams are apart of that music and that band. cant have light without darkness... but hey thats our opinions. i get screaming isnt everyones cup of tea... but thats just periphery. i wouldnt have it any other way. i love how they have there long ass songs that basically tells a story and one minute its soft and beautiful and the next minute your punched in the face with heavyness lol. i like the bi polar mood swings.

Although you're allowed to have your own opinion I must say your opinion is fucking wrong. As I've read most of the top comments I see that I am not the only one to think this, although I may not be saying it in the nicest way. I would love to see an updated reaction to this to see if your minds have changed.
