Satisfying Power Washing of a Piece Of Heavy Equipment

I’m blessed to work at a facility that has a massive wash hose. I’m 6’5” and 300 pounds of farm boy and it’s all I can handle at full power. I can blast mud off from 30 feet away. It’s beautiful. I can was a Cat 980 in 15 minutes. Even if it’s as caked at the one in this video… still only 15 mins. I have to be careful because the water at full pressure is enough volume/force to break the glass in equipment. I’ve accidentally done that. Oops. lol. But man is it a time saver to have a massive water source available.

That's awesome. They had a water truck at the quarry but I never got a chance to use it. Flow is speed. Would be awesome to see a machine done in 15 minutes!

I Think it’s better to wash from top to bottom taking advantage of gravity for the dirt to flow down.

i do this type of washing to HE but i use several different types of turbo heads the one i love most is the KE5002C German Made Dual Tip talk about mud removal half the time to do the dump trucks

At the workshop i used to work we used the installed water system. It was about 10kg/cm. On loose dirt i find it more effective to use lower pressure and many times more water volume. But offcause the high pressure washer (steam) on tougher dirt.

Yeah I've been told one way a lot of quarrys use is a water truck to clean off the dirt, where the large water volume really helps speed it up. With a hot pressure washer though you've got better options for leaving a cleaner finish. Trying to get a small amount of dirt up and under a crack with a large volume of water I would imagine is inefficient though. You just need a water truck with a hot pressure washer on it Best of both worlds!

When I used to wash my own equipment and big trucks(18 -64 wheelers) I would always give a quick spray all over from top to bottom, then wash from top to bottom(as the water from a quick spray would loosen a lot on the bottom) .

First a d foremost: you need to go all around the vehicle, soaking top to bottom, to let the water work into the mud, as you start your washing of one side. This uses less water overall, and makes the job quicker.

Can this be done effectively with a cold water machine using a turbo nozzle?

Depends on the scope your customer wants. Heat really helps lift the grease and leaves a cleaner surface. You can use degreaser and cold water to get it clean. Things will take longer without heat. So figure out with your customer what level of clean they want/expect.

How do you go about quoting and charging for these machines? im just starting into fleets and heavy machinery so im skeptical on pricing

I would bill by the hour which will help it be less stressful, especially if your learning as well. You'll have to learn what level of clean they want/expect. At the time this customer was given an hourly rate of $100/hr for hot pressure washing, starting from when leave the shop to once I'm finished on site, so included travel one way. Four hour minimum. l'd probably be 20% more expensive now. I would spend about an hour to an hour and a half on a single machine.

Is it actual concrete you're looking to remove? In the video it's just quarry grit build up. Using heat helps if its being stubborn. If it's actual concrete you'll need an acid www.eacochem.com/products/ctwash.html

It's at a quarry it's just after it dries still has the dull film look. Was wondering what you are doing different or what acid should I use

Depends on the scope of work for your customer. Mine wouldn't be perfect after either with a slight film, but they were just going to get dirty again the next day so that was within scope. If your customer wants them shiny, check out this sheet on what fleet washers do. www.eacochem.com/product-list/transportation-wash.html Then look up some videos on 2 step fleet washing guns, where they can apply the acid then base by switching a 3 way valve. That's about as efficient as it can be. You can always just use an x-jet in the meantime till ya build one.

Depends on the scope with the customer. Using a detergent, like a degreaser to clean off the grease, would be done if someone was going to be working on a section of the equipment and needed clean access. Otherwise these were back out the next day to get dirty again, so they were just a maintenance level clean.

it is better to wash construction equipment no more than once every 14-30 days, if you wash it more often, you simply overuse water and the washing equipment wears out faster, if you wash it without foam and shampoo, you can not worry about the environment, since the components are natural and do not harm the environment, unlike for car washes where chemicals are used

This was at a quarry. The water was supplied from pumps at the quarry itself and no products were used, save for heat and very occasionally some degreaser when a component needed cleaned to be repaired/replaced. They were cleaned roughly every 2-3 weeks.

Correct, doesn't really matter in this case. When you're washing heavy equipment all day, you'll end up going in all directions as you'll want to switch it up and give your muscles a break.
