I saw this skit when I was in 4th grade. On the following Monday I then proceeded to mockingly call my friend a heterosexual during recess. None of us knew what the word meant (the joke of the skit definitely went over my 4th grader head at the time), but it had the word “sex” in it, so we all assumed it must be bad. My friend then vehemently denied the accusation and another kid overheard all this and told on me. For this I received after school detention during which I tearfully insisted to my teacher that I didn’t mean it and that he wasn’t a heterosexual. My punishment was to call my mom and explain what I had done and then to look the word up in the dictionary and discuss it with her. This was a sufficiently mortifying experience to make me learn my lesson. I have to think now that every adult involved in this situation must have been inwardly laughing to themselves at my childish naiveté about sexual terms.

I had a friend in college who thought he was gay, so he said, but he was really touchy feely with us women. The people said he was always checking my a$$ out behind my back, and grabbed it one time. I didn’t know what to think. Then one day his gay bestfriend, who knew him better than anyone, stood up on the greyhound bus for a trip we were taking and said, “You know ain’t really gay.” 😆😆 I was like, “I knew it!” But homeboy swore he was gay and still dated men.

I could never really see him being such a badass, but he was. He told me when he shot down German planes, he’d look and see if a parachute came out. He said he’d feel relief when he saw the parachutes open, but many times it didn’t. He then just shrugged and said it was War. He was was very nice and gentle. I was very sad when he died.

There are a LOT of genuine heterosexuals who just have fem (male) or butch (female) personalities and would probably be really suited for each other. But it's pointlessly mocked and stigmatized. Skits like these mocking it are a big part of how kids learn the shame early and try to get rid of their actual personalities, totally pointlessly. When really they could accept themselves and find somebody who matches them.
@Nikybeez
@Nikybeez Жыл бұрын
@@dntskdnttllIf you think kids are learning things from spoof skits on SNL, then you should think of yourself as a parent who needs to scapegoat others because you fear failing as a parent when your kid acts like a jerk. And then remember that lessons like that are learned at home, from you and your family. They hear much worse at school and online. It's YOUR job to teach them how to recognize poor behavior and not copy it. It's also YOUR job to teach them what comedy is, and have them learn the word, "subjective", as in "comedy is subjective". It's okay if they find things darkly humorous and it's okay if they don't find things funny. It's NOT okay to pretend that if they want to say offensive jokes because they actually hate others, that it's because of TV and not because your kid is just an ahole(if your kid is being homophobic, check yourself on what you've been saying - tree meet apple). This show isn't a part of "how kids learn" anything, and most certainly not a "big part." Try taking responsibility for your offspring instead of shifting blame to others due to your apathetic and cowardly approach to parenting.

Actually don’t think the skit is negative towards people who don’t fit the stereotype, I actually think it defends them. Kids are getting pushed as if they “have” to be gay or trans based on sexist stereotypes and that’s actually disgusting that it’s being forced on kids who haven’t even gone through puberty yet to think they could possibly be in the wrong body and a surgery or hormones would fix it. The statistics actually say the opposite, it’s transitioned and passing individuals that realize it didn’t solve any of the problems and it’s those who transitioned that are harming themselves even while accepted and passing as something besides what their genetics are.

the skit makes fun of peoples' seeing their world in stereotypes and their surprise when the stereotypes don't hold up. the skit is brilliant; as it really is directed at the audience's own stereotyping, not just that of the other characters' (those in the skit who assumed he was gay because he he had some stereotypically feminine behaviors) Not sure why it wouldn't go over today.... maybe because we want to think that we've evolved past thinking in stereotypes.

I met a soldier from Michigan in Iraq who was about 95.5 percent effeminate. Talking about shopping for curtains, new wall paper for his dining room and matching pillows for the couch... In a super feminine voice. So I didn't say anything, were all soldiers and defending the country, putting our lives on the line and it didn't matter to me, as long as he was well trained in his field. So the chat went on for a good five minutes, then he mentions his wife. I did a double take at the ring on his finger lol. But he was a very chill guy, friendly and nice to talk too. I've had a ton of gay friends over the years and quite a few that came out to me. I think because my ex-wife had a bunch of gay friends and knew that it wasn't an issue with me. It's been 17 years now and this skit just reminded me of him lol God bless him and all our soldiers. Hope he's doing well, Michigan was going thru a wicked bad unemployment crisis back then.

This is one of the first depictions of gay by a non-gay man where the subject was not how gays are hilarious to laugh at, but gay is still funny, just another human characteristic. That's all this is. Dana would be criticized today for the coarse pace between his mime and the dialog. Today, there would be a lot more art between the phone call and the fingernails and the lisp and black dancer. But somebody had to display the physical acting and the *different* situation the first time, and it's not coarse. There are multiple band-new bids here. There is no antecedent to live stage TV to the ostensible mid-american audience, with feedback. This performance turned out to be a tour de force. Dana did mean it as a gay rights piece but he didn't know how, and there is zero f*ing chance he could do this now. The predicate, by the way, is It's Not Bad To Be Gay, and that's a new predicate at this level. Take traditional, at the time, gay situations based on the predicate it's NOT bad. You literally cannot do gay without an external predicate today, in the past few years mawkishly overdone, and that would noise-out the signal. People dont' realize this isn't a flavor or style or moral choice. Fucking with the predicates of jokes kills comedy technically.
