Saul Leiter was one of the greatest undiscovered photographers of the 20th century. Working in New York as a fashion photographer, Saul Leiter amassed an amazing collection of personal work that came to the attention of Howard Greenberg in the 2000's. Before Saul's death - the release of "Early Color" changed Saul's career finally bringing the attention and praise he long deserved.
Last year Greenberg/Steidl released a 2 volume book set called "Early Black and White". Divided into 2 volumes (I. Interior and II. Exterior), the portfolio shows a much different side of Saul. The images are just as beautiful as the Early Color work, but they are made with a completely different approach. In some ways they could have been done by a completely different photographer, but there's a hallmark of the style that is obviously classic Saul Leiter.
The impressive part is that Saul treated black and white vs color as 2 different mediums. Much like an artist who paints and sculpts, the respect for these 2 "mediums" speaks to Saul's passion and respect for photography as well as his extraordinary talent as an artist.

My name is Ted Forbes and I make videos about photography. I’ve been making photographs most of my life and I have a tremendously deep passion for photography that I want to share with you on KZbin.
The Art of Photography is my channel and I produce photography videos to provide a 360 degree look into the world of making images. We all want to get better so lets do this together!
I make videos covering famous photographers, photography techniques, composition, the history of photography and much more.
I also have a strong community of photographers who watch the show and we frequently do social media challenges for photographers to submit their own work. I feature the best and most interesting on the show when we do these so come check it out and get involved!
So come check it out! If you’re a fan of DigitalRev, Fro Knows Photo (Jared Polin), Matt Grainger (That Nikon Guy) or Tony Northrup - you’ll love The Art of Photography. I make video’s giving you a deeper dive into photography techniques, composition and history to compliment the other channels you love to watch.
New shows come out every Sunday, Tuesday and Friday.

If you can't get your hands on the early black and white/ colour books, i really recommend the Saul Leiter Retrospective done by Kehrer Verlag, includes a lot of his fashion work and painting aswell as many images, and essays written by friends

So cool to come across this. I saw a Saul Leiter photograph (original or copy, not sure) framed in a woman's houuse in Oxford, England, once. It was so beautiful and the partial blurring really caught my imagination - so evocative. Had no idea who it was by though, so am feeling happy and inspired to know now. Thanks so much xx

BUT: he is already including “smears of light” as compositional elements. Notice also how he shifts the “subject” slightly to one side so the “in distinct background nothing” becomes a part of it. I would say he’s already Saul Leiter. And lest not forget that behind the scenes lurks the ever present vortex of abstract expressionism, Hans Hoffman, push-pull, open field poetics, Black Mountain, and the mountain that was the Art Students’ League.

Getting more obvious (with the fade style) for the edits in this one.... Not necessarily a bad thing, it's just I'm used to your style being more of a straight run at the subject. Was the cat jumping on the table again? ;-) By the way, I appreciate the lack of a car or movie advert at the start of your work. They really do distract and have nothing to do with the actual content. Keep it up!

off subject a little.....something you said about saul being influenced by a painter....again.. it comes up often, and so it should...But is it ever the case of influence happening the other way round, photographers influencing artists. scraping my memory i'm sure a "big name French impressionist" is said to have learnt a more dramatic framing approach through seeing certain photographers work.

(! maybe someone with more knowledge can help me!) okay, honestly I don't really know anything about photography, but I was once in an ehibition calles "nudes" with photos taken by Saul Leiter, David Lynch and Helmut Newton and now I'm looking for a certain photo from this ehibition, that my friend really really likes. I don't know the name or the photographer (of these three). It was taken on a boat, could have been the European Mediterranian Coast and on the boat was a young woman with dark hair, looking (i think smiling) into the camera. She is wearing a light shirt and one of her breasts is exposed. if i remember correctly it is black and white. If anyone knows something I would be sooo thankful!! (and sorry for my english, it's not my native language)
