These are my favorite lever guns. What a great design

Mine was made in 1922, a takedown in .300 Savage. Matches up with a 1950's Remington 722 in .300 also. My favorite all round cartridge, have been shooting it since 1970. Thank you again for an informative video,

Glad to see someone featuring a Savage 99. I've currently got three of them. 1951 99EG 250-3000 with its original K-4 Weaver. It's the old 1/14 twist but it shoots the Remington factory 100 grain bullets consistently under 1" at 100 yards. It's a good 250 yard deer rifle. Next is a 1955 99F 300 Savage with the jewelled bolt. Not the best trigger but acceptable with a good hold and a modern scope. Hand loaded common Hornady 150 grain spire point bullets for practice. For hunting switch to Hornady 150 grain SuperFormance loads. Recently acquired a later model (1972) 99F in 308. Haven't even got to shoot it yet. Had a pre-tapped and drilled 99EG 300. Traded it straight across for my Iver Henricksen custom built 98 Mauser 338-06. Looking to add both 24" barrel 99EG 300 and 22" barrel 99R heavy weight 300 to my collection. Also 30-30 Winchester, 303 Savage, 243 Winchester, 358 Winchester, 22-250 and Savage 22 High Power. Oh jeez. I want them all. I wonder if there's a support group for 99 Savage addicts. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

I like the 99F's. My pre-million also has a pretty poor trigger. The bullets it shoots well tend to be ones with a lower bc so I haven't made it into a 400 yard rifle but it is doing ok to 350 or so. Still a long way. The 358 post million is a worthwhile addition. 348 Win ballistics and a full 1.5 pounds lighter than the 71. The post-million are less fancy then the hand checkered pre-millions but they have nicer triggers on average.

Great video, I have a Savage 99e in 308 I inherited from my father. Its a great rifle for bush hunting with open sights, its a nice handy fast action rifle.

Great video! I love the detailed info and your explanation was excellent. I know I’ve previously mentioned my love for the Savage 99 and the 308 cartridge. My Savage 99 308 is one of my favorite rifles. The trigger has a long drag until it goes off but I make it work. I had a local gunsmith change the barrel for me (found one of the last factory barrels several years ago) because the original was worn out. 308 is a capable and inherently accurate cartridge and the 99 is a fine design that is easy and comfortable to handle.

I inherited my dads savage 99 in 308, it’s a 99A straight grip tang safety with round counter. Wears a 3-9 Redfield my dad had on there since 1980. I killed my first elk with that rifle.

Great video! Savage 99's we're always noted for their accuracy "back in the day" before the Internet. I have a 99F .300 Savage and absolutely love the weight and handiness and heritage of that rifle. Many moons ago back in the 70s, early one morning while driving an old logging road into one of my hunting spots I happened across two "old" couples (two men and their wives) standing next to an old four door 1940s era sedan way back in the mountains. Laying there at their feet were two massive beautiful four point mule deer bucks they had just drug down the hill to the logging road. Leaning against the bumper of that old grey sedan were two old Savage 99 rifles, twins, just like those two massive bucks. I'll never forget that sight. The Savage 99 is a hunters rifle for those that can appreciate what it can do. I wish Savage would reintroduce them as I am sure they would sell like hot cakes if they would make them with the quality they deserve. Why heck, it could be chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor and 7mm-08, .450 Bushmaster, etc. But I don't think today's corporate types are generally that brave nor that smart...

Nice rifle. I have one of those from 1956 with a Leupold 2-7 on it. For a 308 it is a little fussy, but my best load is with 150 gr. Sierra BT/W748. I learned the hard way that the magazine will not work with a 2.8 OAL, and needed a 2.75. That's the same length as the Federal factory ammo that works in it, and also matches the OAL from the Sierra manual.

I can load to 2.780 in mine. Very nice feeding.

Good Morning Great White North!! I was gifted some Hornady GTX 90. (Mono metal) in .257 and want to load some re22 Have you ever tried these GTX 90's? I have the same Savage. I shoot the disco'd Speer 165 RN & 4320 @ 2600 with great success. ( But dont see ranges you do) here in New England)

Pardon me while I wipe up the drool dripping down my chin. The Model 99 is my all time favorite rifle platform. I had one I bought from a client of mine. It had the detachable magazine which was convenient. It was in .308 Win. My dream came true, except I discovered the barrel was totally shot. I could barely make out the rifling in the barrel with the bore scope. Accuracy was non-existent. I tried to find someone to rebarrel it and could find no-one. I ended up trading it for a Henry lever action in .45-70 which I hated and ended up selling it in less than a year. I finally found a Savage Axis Hunter in .350 Legend in left hand for hunting in Ohio with my grandsons. (Surprisingly, the .350 Legend would make a very decent rifle for caribou and even sheep at 200 yards.) I'm happy with my rifle collection but I still long for that first love.

Keep looking they come up from time to time. If I could find a Savage 99F Premillion in 250-3000 at a good price I'd bring it home with me.

It's interesting using the old 99's as an lefty and righty rifle. One thing I despise about those second focal plane riflescopes is that the subtension values in the reticle change within any given power. The center of reticle remains a constant but the B&C subtensions don't stay constant. Difficult to deal with IMO but some prefer this over front focal plane optics. Still it's all personal preference and I enjoy seeing you use an classic old rifle to maximum effect.

I like that you can trick it to different trajectory profiles by changing the power ring but it can also get you in trouble if careless

I used to have a 99C that I really liked, but life happens and I had to sell it. Recently, I found a 99F, I hope it shoots as well as the 99C did. We will see. On another note, do you still have the 405 Winchester? It would be interesting to see a video of you hunting with it. My health is going downhill and I don't know if I will be able to get out hunting with mine.
@north612 жыл бұрын
Yes I have the 405. When my North Fork bullets come I'll use it on a Bison!

@@north61 good luck!! I look forward to seeing that video. I had a TC encore in 405 that I took 2 antelope with. It was nice but I later found an 1895 in 405 (one of the teddy roosevelt commemoratives). It is much more enjoyable to use than the encore. I put a decent recoil pad on it and also a Williams receiver sight without modifying the rifle. I just changed out the pad and the rifle came drilled and tapped for the sight, from the factory, so it would be very simple to put it back to original, but I wanted it to hunt with. I took a nice antelope buck with it and it was so much more enjoyable than using the encore. I drew a once in a lifetime moose tag and was very tempted to take the 1895 405, but decided I might need a little more range so I took my favorite 30-06 instead. I would love to do some more hunting with that 405, but we will see. My health issues aren't helping anything.

I did find another Winchester 71. Glad I kept my ammo. Haven't fired it yet, hope it shoots well. I took an antelope with my first one, but life happens. Im glad I was able to get another one.

I have a 99f in 243 and I want to love it but the trigger is horrible. I'm going to try and find a gunsmith that can make it better but gunsmiths in my area are few and far between
