If you have ever played a decent DnD campaign - you know how there are several party members and sometimes one of them gets a personal storyline. But in hands of a talented Dungeon Master this becomes not a "solo adventure" where everyone else are just prompts but rather the whole group embarking on a journey to help their friend fulfill their destiny. And they are still all the main characters, they all move the plot, one of them just jump-starts it and eventually closes it.

Samwise Gamgee is a flat side character who remains the same throughout LOTR. All his struggles are in service to Frodo's journey, and he never really evolves throughout the story. And yet his refusal to change in spite of overwhelming odds, Frodo pushing him away or falling to the One Ring is why many consider him to be the true hero of the story. Samwise couldn't fight Frodo's battle with the One Ring for him. Instead Samwise's heroism was loving, trusting and supporting Frodo throughout a grueling journey.

Nolan is an expert at making really complicated plots and concepts rooted in simple characters and themes. It makes it so much easier to attach yourself to the film vs something like The Fountain helmed by Aronofsky. I also think of The Prestige, where Nolan leans into the “something weird is going on here” just to fall back on “nope it’s super simple lol”.
@runninginsept

I used to believe this until I caught Tenet, which exposed Nolan's flaw as a director: he actually doesn't care for his characters; it is the story that consumes him. The reason his past protagonists were compelling was either because he had his brother Jonathan on the writing team who would help tighten those pieces up, or he had great leading men who lobbied for their characters. The story with Leo Dicaprio on Inception apparently was that he would only work with Nolan if he (Leo) could have free reign to develop his character. Which he did spectacularly. So it was a little mindblowing to me discovering that, what I previously felt were uniquely Nolan's works of genius, actually deserved broader collaborative recognition than singular. Obviously the products that were his award winning movies benefitted from his vision, but taking a cue from this video: Nolan's best movies are only as great as they are because other equally strong artistes contributed. As such, the reverence Nolan is routinely given only goes to prove that his leading men truly do not get the credit they properly deserve. Nolan's "luck" ran out after Interstellar. Dunkirk's storytelling was scattered without a central protagonist, and Tenet was simply rubbish. Moving forward, if Nolan wants to revisit his pre Dunkirk success, he must be very, very selective about the writers he recruits and the actors he casts.

@@runninginsept you’re making a lot of assumptions based on one movie, and I’m saying one movie because Dunkirk was a critical darling and the highest grossing WWII movie of all time, so I’m not sure why you’re even bringing that into this. Good cast design is more like good worldbuilding than most people realize. You should come up with enough details to make the characters and setting come alive, but that doesn't mean every element of the worldbuilding or character's goals/backstory need to be shared: just what best supports the narrative.

Also I think it's worth noting that the side characters are flat, but they're not bland. Even if they don't have deep motivations or character journeys, they still have personalities, and they're all still memorable and have their own time to shine, which helps us stay invested in this cast more than many other casts where the characters are all dynamic, but they're not interesting. That's really a testament to the actors who played them in addition to the writers

Even though the characters in Inception are a bit one dimensional and flat, the actors behind them admittedly do bring life to them. Imo inception relies on the star power of the actors to carry the ideas and themes, not cuz the characters are well written or have development. Ironically, The main star of the movie is the movie itself. Imo The Dark Knight, Memento and inception are Nolan’s true masterpieces.

I see Fischer as the subject of their story. And everyone else as the writers and editors and crew of a movie creating a story. So its a story within a story within a story. All with one protagonist. The viewer (director, sound guy, consumer) Cobb, Fischer. Fantastic video.

The flat side characters also serve beautifully to really make the audience wonder about that final shot. There's a reason it stuck with people so much beyond just a "haha I wonder!" The characters feel like the static bulletpoint versions of the people you know in real life when you meet them in a dream. So when the movie presents the question "Is Cobb still in a dream?" you really are left to wonder.

Apropos of nothing, I think the actual vast length of time required for the design of the dream levels strongly indicates that the whole film is Cobb's dream. Inception came out when I was in architecture school. Subsequently, my studio mates and I became obsessed as at least three characters are architects and Ariadne was a top architecture student at what we assumed was the École des Beaux-Arts (widely considered the best architecture school in the world) where Cobb's father taught design. It's implied that Cobb went there as well. We would play the soundtrack continuously whilst working all hours in studio on our projects and watched the film A LOT. The sheer amount of well-crafted models shown in the background at one point would have required a very large amount of time. You don't just build a model; you instead first come up with a parti, followed by lots and lots of sketches. Then you have to draw lots of plans, elevations, and sections that change with each new design iteration. Meanwhile, you're building "trash models" that inform the work even more. Finally, after you have a decent design, you spend hours and hours and hours making a sexy building model. And that's just one project. There's no way an A+-getting arch student is not going to do all the steps required for good design; I mean, it's literally the way it's been done for many thousands of years. In other words, styles and materials change but practice does not. Of course, I wouldn't have made it past the impromptu maze sketch exercise so what do I know.
@mothichorror446
@mothichorror446 Жыл бұрын
This is a really interesting take on the matter. Personally I think there's more of a difference between literal architecture and the dreamscape version, since planning a building is different to planning an experience of a building. Especially when all you need to do to change the setup is focus on something.
@3VILmonkey
@3VILmonkey Жыл бұрын
@@mothichorror446 I take your point but proper design technique involves manipulating a user's experience of a building, space, or landscape in addition to health, safety, and welfare. The design theory itself is called phenomenology. In other words, good design affects you emotionally whether you're aware of it or not. It's actually preferred that the user not be aware how or why. So experience is one of the reasons you pay an architect 10% of the construction budget. The design professional by virtue of a long and very rigorous education can do something the layperson can not. The use of expansion and compression throughout a space is one of the more obvious methods and has been used for thousands of years. The architects of some ancient barrows in England utilized geometry and material to enhance certain sound frequencies. Villa Savoye, designed by the great (but reportedly "just plain mean") Swiss Modernist architect Le Corbusier, has as a bit of its parti, a circulation to the sunlight. This is a direct result of Corb touring and studying the villas of Pompeii. I could go on and on but I'll stop.
@3VILmonkey
@3VILmonkey Жыл бұрын
@@mothichorror446 Also, we based our hypothesis on the sheer number of well-crafted models shown in the film when Ariadne asks Cobb for design advice. Those models represent, at the absolute very least, a solid year of continuous seven-day-a-week sketching, drawing, and modeling.

No one needs to convince me to love Inception more than I already do, but damn there are always new things to appreciate about this masterpiece. EDIT: Also, speaking of Inception in these terms makes me feel better about the fact that I don't necessarily have a lot of complex supporting/side characters in some of my own stories. Especially considering one of my stories is written in first person and is, at its heart, solely about the journey of the protagonist and how the people she meets along the way either help or hinder her journey of self discovery. I would absolutely LOVE to make every single side character deep, complex, with back stories that justify everything but...as this video points out, it's not always necessary. So thank you for making me realize I don't need to go overboard, and that what matters is what the story is trying to tell and the journey the protagonist (or protagonists) is undertaking. EDIT 2: And yes I did hear you talk about the fact that side characters are still treated as if they are the focus of their own stories, but my comment is specifically about knowing when and where to put focus and complexity.

Thank you! This video really gave me a burst of understanding and inspiration all at once. context One of my writing projects is an anthology series of horror fantasy stories based around a shared world build. The core cast are old, like really old, so naturally they all have complex personalities and nearly unlimited storytelling potential. In editing, I will notice a lack of narrative focus. This video really helped put into light why. All these characters have protagonist potential best left explored when they are the protagonist of their own story. Always love your videos, but I get extra stoked when a new video comes out that enlightens me on the solution to a current writing struggle.

@Duiker36
@Duiker36 Жыл бұрын
Hard disagree. The Dark Knight trilogy's characterization mostly exists off Heath Ledger's back. For everything else, the only real character is Gotham City and the apparent characters are shadows cast by the light of that sole character. And I think that that's a lot of what made the movies good, when Heath Ledger wasn't on screen. And it falls down in the third movie because Talia and Bane aren't shadows cast by Gotham; they're shadows cast by the first movie, and it's not enough to tell the story that the Nolans wanted.

Paradoxically, if an artist was to express the idea that external reality is a distraction for which no one can be responsible and your true moral obligation is to yourself, the very act of communicating such a theme would involve an assumption of outward responsibility. I've always felt that Inception's contemplations on the subject of fatherhood are notably overlooked in popular criticism. Cobb's key motivation to secure a relationship with his children, and he pursues it by way of undermining Fisher's relationship with his late father. I would agree that personal agency is one of the questions to which the film draws attention.

The reason side characters are so flat is because Cobb is asleep. Listen to what Michael Caine's character says when Cobb visits him asking for help - tells you everything you need to know. Up to you to find other hints that prove the very same point, except not all of them are proving this point with a dialogue or even another character involved. And Cobb's totem matters only in the sense that it actually isn't being used the way Cobb tells everyone to use theirs - proving nothing but, but the fact that Cobb is asleep, whether it keeps on spinning or not.

It’s interesting you discuss how each of the side characters are indeed static and flat but written to mimic round and dynamic. Could it be that these side characters are projections of Cobb’s real associates, similar to Mal? I know it doesn’t fit with the Michael Cane interview stating Nolan told him every scene he was in was reality, but it’d be an interesting idea
@PedanticPig

Even if the side characters are real and not projections, Cobb himself obviously isn't sure, and as we're seeing it mostly from his perspective it makes sense that they'd come across that way. And as his difficulty differentiating what's real and what's a dream makes it hard for him to make new meaningful relationships, that perpetuates itself in turn.

And the sub-plot where a super rich man, one they demonstrate is so rich he just buys up an airline to solve a problem doesn't want another super rich man getting a monopoly. I saw it at the cinema, with two friends, one said it was the best movie he had ever seen, the other said it was just a heist movie, and I didn't care. I think you're giving the movie credit for a shortcoming. Good storytelling isn't "the movie is over two hours long so let's strip anything interesting away from the characters", good storytelling is "the growth of the characters and the progression of the story work in synergy". You said yourself "if we don't care about the characters, the whole thing falls flat." That's pretty much the point. Interstellar had a much better balance. I see this as a flaw with Inception because it ISN'T perfectly scripted. I don't think anything needed to be cut in order to flesh out the characters a little, but if you wanted to, there's a whole side plot about getting a new sleep serum that could have been a more personal moment instead, driving the plot forward and developing the rest of the characters. Long story short, it's one of my favorite movies, but I can't call it "perfect storytelling" if I can literally feel that all but one character is a hollow shell with no motivations of their own that the writer is pushing around from one move to the next.

Weird. I did notice the lack of personality in the characters when I first watched it and it's the reason that, while I like Inception on some level, it always felt kind of lonely, empty for me. It was like looking at a guy talking to himself, which was uncomfortable for me. A lot of Nolan's movies are like that, when you think about it: Shutter Island, for example, is completely told from the perspective of the unreliable narrator. While his movies are enjoyable, there's always a disconnect between his characters, a certain loneliness that disturbs me. Most of his movies are about some kind of isolation.

I'm not the first person to make this point, but it's worth thinking about Inception as an autobiographical work, too. It's a movie about a film crew, trying to put an idea into the head of their audience, and the director is the focus, trying to get back to seeing his kids despite his work. It's not a happy lens.

Damn. I feel like you spent 13 minutes describing terrible writing. But your enthusiasm brought me back to my own enjoyment of the film. Somehow I disagreed and agreed with every single thing you said. I hate you for this, I’ll subscribe.

I loved Inception when it came out and still like it for the storyworld it created: the idea of a dream heist is really good. Having it watched several times now, I seem to only enjoy it for the spectacle, but don't care for the characters at all. you already mentioned that most of the characters are flat: I would argue that Cobb is flat as well. Not because he doesn't have a good backstory or motivation, but because his characterization is not supported well by the side characters nor his web of antagonists. What is Cobb's weakness? that he holds on to Maude and blames himself for her death. Who is his main antagonist? Maude. I think it's very difficult to make your protagonist's weakness their antagonist because the anatgonist doesn't exist outside of the protagonists. In Inception, Maude literally doesn't have any purpose other than being there to make Cobb feel guilty. She doesn't confront him about his weakness as villains should do - she IS is weakness. And because of that, Cobb's change doesn't feel to come as a consequence of the story. And that's why ultimately, even the main character falls flat to me. The web of relationships between the characters is pretty weak and so it seems that his allies are only there to either justify exposition (and there is A LOT OF THAT in the movie, and it's not interesting when you have already seen the movie). Or to be there for action scenes. And that's why it's not a movie that I like watching multiple times because I just don't find anything new in them. oh well, the set pieces are amazing and the movie looks gorgeous and the soundtrack is superb. it's a great movie upon your first watch and a spectacle afterwards. Not a 10/10 movie to me.

I’ve always liked Inception but thought it was overrated because none of the characters are really compelling.

I hated this movie. Is it a dream? Is it not? Is inception a real thing or something the hero dreamed about during his flight? Is he awake at the end or not? It's not resolved at the end and people will say "it's open to interpretation, which is great". Yes. So are Abhram's mistery boxes.

Well, no. The point of a story isn't to have a physical conclusion. The point of a story is to have a message. Now, you can say that Inception fell down on this: what are its themes? I can't answer that quickly. But I think it's the important question to be asking. Whether or not it was all a dream only matters insofar as it supports the theme. So you can dislike it, certainly. But "is he awake" was always the wrong question to be asking.
