@@Skfkf1393aFunny how that's now become Mazda - they did exactly that with the current generation 3, to ensure the controls felt more premium, and how they spent a ton of money on fading LED indicators that replicate the more natural perception of how an incandescent bulb dims. It's mind blowing to me when Mercedes, just before the current jelly-bean styling, had just started to shirk the Daimler-Chrysler era interiors and was feeling really nice again...only to turn into cheap creaky plastic and strip club lighting plastered everywhere. I am generally OK with tech (I own and love a VW ID.4 for example) but this is insanity. And the problem with leaning on tech is it gets democratized. But luxury does not. @@Wasabi9111 the same way Mercedes became a status symbol in the 80s even though GM was putting more tech in Cadillacs. Exclusivity and astronomically awesome build quality. A modern Civic or Jetta feels cheap compared to my 23 Arteon for example, so you could look at that and say "hey why did you buy this $35k car that has the same tech as a $25k car" and I'd tell you to open and close the door and feel the difference. Same deal with my 89 560SL compared to a Cadillac Allante (the Allante is a lovely car too though). I think the best era for cars was the 2010's, right at the cusp of cars coming with some decent safety technology. You had backup cameras, parking sensors. climate control and other features were still physical knobs and buttons. Adaptive cruise control was just becoming main stream and, in a lot of cars, worked really well! Screens were there but weren't "touch". I really do think cars from the 2010's will be highly sought after over the 2020's by people who appreciate things that work.

I can see the tacky with the screens, but there’s the ability to just get two cars screens with a wood dashboard. As for the “cheap” you are completely wrong. The e class has soft touch materials and does what Mercedes is known for (also mentioned in the video): quiet and comfy rides. Seems to me lately all you people do is just focus on the negatives and clearly ignore what sets it apart from your average economy cars

First of all - this was a great and very balanced review. You guys deserve every subscriber you get - and hope it continues to grow. The attention to detail with the engineering of the car was fantastic for a geek like me. We recently had our 2017 Mercedes in the shop at the dealer and they gave us a newer loaner with all of the massive screens. Not having physical buttons for basic tasks was NOT a positive. The steering wheels controls were pretty good, but still had to use the screen more than we wanted to. But the car was beautiful, comfortable, and felt like a luxury product overall. My daily driver is a GMC Sierra truck with Google Integration. That is the best tech I've ever had in any car and the voice commands work flawlessly. To me, that is the technology benchmark for Mercedes to beat.

SavageGeese watchers are not John Customer though. We might despise all the screens, but people who go to the dealer who want the badge will be wowed by the screens and that the car has gizmos that mean you don’t have to pay attention to the chore of driving. My relative just got a Mercedes and all he cares about is that it’s comfortable and quiet. He does not miss his Navigator’s buttons and dials and V8. His Merc feels fast, is quiet and comfortable like his Navi and has a big star on the front.

To me this car is so much better looking than the previous w213, and I'm glad they gave it a different front end than the C or S class. This will most likely be my next car, the digital lights, 4d burmester, driver assist pack, and 19-20 inch wheels with the 6 cylinder. I'm a highway commuter over an hour daily and it's night time of wee hours when I come home, hence some of the packaging. I couldn't care less about the super screen, another screen to replace as it ages or not. The high beam assist is the same way on my Audi partially annoying on a backroad it's usually the white signs, on the highway they're the best I've ever had most of the time. These mid sizers are basically the size of the full size sedans of a couple gens ago.

My first dream car growing up was a 1981 Audi Coupe GT. My second was a mid-80’s MB 300SDL. Then I graduated college and started dumping cash I didn’t really have into BMW’s (325is, 525i), Volvo 5 cylinders, etc. I was happy and car-broke back then. Fast forward to the past few years - today. I can pretty much afford anything I want within reason (to about $80k or so) and am keeping an eye on what I’d like to drive next. Watching KZbin videos of people driving older Audis with 5 cylinders, Alfa GTV6’s, BMW I6’s baying towards the redline puts a lump in my throat. Current events make me gag, and going back to the feeling of what brought me comfort and joy is what will make me open up my checkbook. There’s zero chance of me picking up a MB, BMW, or Audi. I have a 24’ Volvo XC60 T8. Do I like it? No, its a 4 banger, mildly tolerable, and its cheaper than the MB, BMW, Audi. What will my next car be? If Subaru were to put a turbo on the Forester, I’d buy one in 2 seconds. It has gauges, knobs, and is quirky. If Audi or Volvo put a 5 cyl in their midsize cars I’d line right up. There’s nothing special about MB, BMW, Audi anymore. There’s no “comfort” for the older people who remember (and can afford) the feel of the older cars. The premium carmakers have removed the magic - and their [lack of] sales show it. It’s a shame because lots of hard work goes into the design and engineering of some of these cars. They’ve destroyed the demand for their product, and not everybody will lay out the money for an LC500.

If I can offer a few suggestions for the sound system graphs; cutoff the graph at 20Hz--there's nothing useful from the sound system below that. Measure in high res, but present as smoothed OCTAVE data as that more readily represents what you'll actually perceive; the human ear is much more sensitive to broader octave-octave balance than small or narrowly spaced burbles in the response. Those burbles typically vary greatly, depending on the exact seat and head position. Showing the high res measurement, for your purposes, is visual clutter.
