I was genuinely surprised with the direction of this video. I really appreciate the energy that SavageGeese goes through in order to appreciate high-quality engineering on these new cars. Agreed, though I think they were slightly credulous about BMW claims in this. An automaker claiming to specify battery chemistry is pretty much nuts. CATL, the Chinese company they're buying the cells from, is the biggest manufacturer of these sort of batteries. They're the experts in battery chemistry, not BMW. All the business about been permanent magnets versus electromagnets also has me rolling my eyes a bit. There are legitimate efficiency and other reasons permanent magnets motors are used.

@@tamasszabo8824 Agree 100% The EV “disruption” model is made possible by government regulations putting a thumb (or 3 trillion) on the scale. EVs just don’t really do anything better than gasoline powered cars/trucks, except maybe accelerate harder. Owners need a place to charge EVs, usually daily, because gasoline stores more energy per pound than a battery can. How do we get the stuff to make batteries? Strip mining? What do we do with the batteries when they degrade? Uh oh. That’s a huge drawback for EVs, especially if you like road trips or use your truck to tow a trailer full of tools/parts in four counties every day for work and you’re driving a 1999 model with hundreds of thousands of miles on it. But what do I know.
@jefffaller84742 жыл бұрын
As an EV owner I don't completely agree with his closing thoughts because its the typical goal post moving line when you've been conditioned to buy gasoline and are struggling with change: "when they get 200 miles range, no...300...wait...400...when the next battery comes out...when there cheaper..." the list is endless, and ridiculous in 2022. My suggestion, buy an EV now because you're ready to make a change away from pumping gas as a ridiculous expensive habit for starters. First, A LOT of NEW BMWs and Mercedes and 6 figure luxury cars in general (ICE or electrified) are leased because of the massive depreciation and the image signaling a new car represents to many buyers in this price range. The overwhelming majority of new BMWs in particular are leased, so is this truely a ding on the EV platform? no. Prior to the Tesla Model 3 (2017) I would have agreed to lease your Leaf or what ever you bought between 2010 and 2017 when the Model 3 came out. However, its widely excepted that the Model 3 started the era of buying your EV for the long term. For reference, I bought my 2018 BMW i3 with very, very, low miles in 2020 for a bargain $22K from the dealer and intend to drive it for many many years, its the cheapest transportation there is and I still have zero battery degradation after 50K miles and zero maintenance costs. The long term high mileage data is readily available now which proves that fears about battery degradation is mostly unfounded and minimal after a 100k miles or more and you still have plenty of range to meet your daily needs. I don't agree that EVs are disposable after 3 years, that's ridiculous, we're just not used to seeing true advancements in the auto industry, so it seems like there's never the right time to commit. Are you not going to buy the new iPhone because there will be a new and improved model available in 2025?

Couldn't disagree more. Designers, crafting something globally, are not basing on self-proclaimed car enthusiasts that wouldn't be interested in this car, or this brand for that matter, anyway. My last car was a Taycan 4S CT. The iX is far more useable, and quite fun to drive. It did not really love the Taycan’s coasting-on-lift-off, strategy. Sometimes when you lift-off, you really do want the car to slow down. The iX is brilliant at predictability and speed management. The electric motors and the air suspension make you believe that the car knows what you want it to do, before you do, and has already executed the adjustment. Really a technological achievement. The range we have experienced has been over 325 miles after each charge, with very normal and sometimes being aggressive on the throttle. This vehicle can also be driven on 1 pedal which makes it easy. The I drive 8 system has a bit of a learning curve. However, once we got used to doing the verbal commands and created some shortcuts, it has been quite easy to navigate through it. We have the Harmon Kardon sound system and it is very good. Tesla doesn't come close to the way that this handles or rides. (We test drove the Y and X ) Plus being subjected to Tesla's OS without the choice to have Android Auto or Apple Car Play was a bit of a disappointment. You're absolutely right that this type of vehicle should be leased because of what the next generation will be able to offer.

@@JollyGiant19 "the only limitation to sales would be supply chain constraints." What you mentioned, plus: 1. Infrastructure to support charging just as easily as pumping gas while driving cross country. 2. Being able to charge as quickly as pumping gas. At the moment, pure EVs are either a luxury second car with a garage to plug in, or applicable to big city dwellers who rarely drive long distances. For just about everyone else, it's simply a non-starter. That, and EVs still can't 'get out of dodge' as easily as ICE engines in case of emergencies. I think this video overlooks a few facts…namely…Tesla is currently built on 400v architecture and most EV’s are substantially less. Currently, 800v architecture is not supported by current charging infrastructure..so it makes no sense to wait out something that will likely not happen for maybe 5-10 years. The benefits of an 800v system are minimal. If you’re basing your decision to by an EV based on charge time..then you’re not really looking for an EV. It’s silly to base your decision on waiting for 400v v. 800v. You could buy a Lucid or Inoniq 5 now with that infrastructure and gains are minimal. The car has to have a built in power inverter that speeds up the process, but then you have other issues with cooling, heat, and power efficiency. BMW purposely used 400v because it was the most efficient. No need to really precondition my the battery to charge and it’s plug and play. It’s a super easy car to operate. Maybe educate yourself more on different EV infrastructure and try to understand it. Then you can make a more informative decision, rather than just unsupported conclusions to make people fearful of owning an EV. It’s just like any other car…it’s never going to be an asset and you will always lose money.

As for design, I’m hopeful they got the message, and will refine a new design language much like they did in the early 2010s following their experiments in design in the 2000s. Even though I believe you're spot on most of the time, there's a couple of things I digress, and I'm pretty sure time will confirm it. a) this is not a hyper-disposable car. Batteries and EVs are evolving, but the increase in battery performance and capacity is slowing down year by year. In 5-years this car will still be competitive in terms of performance and capacity. b) In terms of maintenance, BMW is one of the few manufactures that allows external workshops to diagnose and replace individual modules of a battery. So there is no need to replace the whole battery if one cell fails. This is the opposite to Tesla, specifically the latest Model Y which is a repair nightmare. Taking into account a 1000-cycle lifetime for the battery before it degrades below 80%, the iX could easily hit a 300,000 mile life before requiring a battery change due to degradation. c) 800volt vs 400volt. It's an improvement but not a revolution. Most chargers do not support it yet, and due to chemistry the overall charging power is usually still maintained at 1C. There needs to be a revolution in battery chemistry in order to reach 2C or higher. the 800volt architecture will allow BMW to increase peak charging, specially between 10 to 80%, but most of the time you won't be needing it. (95% of all charges happen at home). d) Next BMW architecture using the newest motors and batteries won't make this car obsolete. It will increase capacity and also reduce weight and volume. But most top-of-the range cars will still stay at around 80-100kWh. The reduction in weight and volume will allow for slight increase in space and also more flexible designs and lower consumptions, but don't expect getting below 10-15 kWh/100km.

This is for people with houses and garages in NYC suburbs or California or wherever who drive 15 miles per day and occasionally take their family up to the mountain or the beach. You guys overestimate how spread out stuff is in the areas wealthy people live. And regarding the battery longevity - yes, this may be disposable and replacing the battery sounds like a nightmare, but where are you guys getting the idea that batteries last 10 years at most? Long range EVs that have made it past 100k or even 200k miles still have the vast majority of their range left with modern BMS and cells. Aside from (usually in warranty) pack failures, the only cars that have actually lost significant capacity have been very early EVs and non-temperature controlled packs in Leafs and the such. Sure, a 350m range may not be impressive in 10 years but it seems manufacturers don’t seem to be interested in boosting range much past where they are now. All the new platforms are targeting 300 miles except for upstarts like Lucid and very slippery cars like the EQS. We may have more efficient cells, slightly faster charging, and lighter platforms, but manufacturers are putting money into better cells for cheaper and lighter packs. While I wish that solid state and other tech will lead to 600 mile range 150kwh sedans and stuff, it will just lead to cheaper base models with the same 60kwh capacity and 250-300 miles ranges. Hell, even BMW said in a press release they weren’t going to target EV ranges beyond 300 miles.

We live in one of the largest suburbs in America, weathy on top of it. We don't have charging infrastructure and most places we go is 20 min one way. It all adds up. And to go to Electrify america charger it's another 20 minutes and usually over crowded or broken. Then to add 35min to charge 70% sucks. Period. I have this argument with Californians all the time who live in a bubble and don't travel to "normal" murica.

@@savagegeese ok, fair enough, I wouldn’t say charging infrastructure is by any means well developed, but I still think it’s decently well developed for a large portion of driving needs. I get it - I’m on the Eastern mid Atlantic seaboard and while all the major travel corridors are flooded with chargers, as soon as you get off the interstates and up into the mountains you really have to search for chargers. I still think the Midwest is a bit of an exception to how most huge population centers are, but there’s no doubt that there’s large swaths of the nation that are subpar or unusable for EV travel. Charger reliability is also a major problem that underlines how thin existing chargers are spread out, but I think that’s quickly expanding if you take a look at what people experienced just 2-4 years ago. I remember a major car review mag had a couple of cars stranded or didn’t finish because the charging infrastructure was crap but today most travel routes have enough capacity for usable travel. Two additional notes: - One, the charging network is more of a personal decision for a car buyer rather than a dig at any particular EV (aside from Tesla due to super chargers), and since the standard is unlikely to change any time soon, current and older EVs on CCS aren’t really going to become deprecated for use. - Two, that’s not really the point of what I keep saying about you guys. Most current EV drivers don’t in fact use EVs jumping between fast chargers (and while apartment dwellers are going to be a massive hurdle to onboard, even there the solution is overnight chargers rather than making fast chargers comparable to gas stations). Most people have home chargers and could probably get by without gas in a PHEV, save for a couple yearly trips. Even if they do need something else for the yearly trip upstate, people cars in this price range often have second. It’s kind of like driving a truck year round for the yearly Home Depot run for plywood and mulch - sure, people want that, but it doesn’t accurately describe their average driving. Most people that can afford EVs don’t drive long distance - they may road trip to the next metropolis over or the beach but anything over 500 miles is a flight. This is particularly evident for luxury EVs - owners that can afford those can afford domestic flights even for smaller trips and value their time over perhaps some comfort driving. So yes, the charging system still sucks and it’s nowhere near as convenient to road trip EVs as it is gas cars, but it’s like you guys overlook how pleasant EV ownership is for daily driving. I won’t disagree that the fast charger network has ways to go and is unlikely to ever be as quick as filling a tank. It’s just that for the vast majority of people, including in more spread out states, fast charging is likely to be a rare event. I know I wrote a damn essay in response and I don’t expect you to read it, so I’m sorry for that. I will concede that the ease of use of EVs for daily driving is or should be self evident so it makes sense to talk about their weaknesses in rarer situations. I guess it’s like when you take street cars to the track to see their real limit dynamics even though most people will commute with them. Maybe it’s not fair to expect you to positive towards EVs when you often disparage them anyway for driving experience reason. I still really appreciate your driver focused reviews compared to the dearth of tech reviewers on EVs listing numbers and touching screens instead of driving them. But yes, I get your concern - I may not be in California but I admit my area doesn’t fairly represent the majority (by area) of America so your guys’ take is valuable. Can I also ask why you bother with public charging in your suburb? I couldn’t tell you the nearest charger because I’ve never used one closer than 50 miles away.

@@Anya-Prime Your explanations are well thought out and true. I read every word. EVs are mostly a joy to drive. The iX for almost every reason you mention is great. What we are fighting on our end is a multi layer issue. Tha fact like companies launched EVs with no national support or even availability in colder climates. Even Ioniq5, It's not available in every state. So we get left with cars like this that are not even attainable for most people. And brands are just not honest about the technology. The sustainable "green" image when 70% of EVs are leased. I mean we could have a 2 day chat about all of the bases that are not covered including cost to repair, proprietary battery tech, down the cell and software layer that makes it impossible to repair and service long term. Also the fact these brands are treating these ultra expensive bricks like smartphones. I mean again outside of charging issues we know already most brands won't support the first gen products long term. They can't even answer questions about service and support. So you have to understand we are VERY worried for consumers.
