I bought this same vehicle in the same trim, just a different color. Here's a normal boring car person review who doesn't drive fast or drive a lot of cars. I'm comparing this to a 2012 Nissan Altima that I drove for 10 years. Right when I test drove it, I knew I wanted it. To me, it drove like like a 70K Audi. Just so incredibly solid and premium feeling. Also, the inside was like an expensive SUV as well. Again, this compared to a 2012 Nissan. I've never floored my Rogue and rarely go above 50 cause I drive in a city. If you're just going from light to light, it's super peppy. I love cars you don't have to mash the gas to get somewhere. You just touch the gas and it goes. So, I don't notice the CVT cause I don't drive spirited enough to notice. Feels like a normal auto to me. Cause yes, When you floor these cars, they sound like dog shit. So, this review is for the normal boring city drivers who drive slow, play music, and want a premium quiet SUV. I love this SUV

I'm with you. Used to be a lead footed car enthusiast in my 20s, I am now in my 60s. Comfort is now the most important thing to me, and with retirement looming, value for money is 2nd most important. Plus, I still value elegant aesthetics. The Rogue is my favorite in the segment. It's great as a brand-new purchase or as a lease, but for people who are planning to put 100k miles into a long-term purchase, the super complex engine and a tranny with a negative history is very high risk as the reviewers concluded.

Guys, all joking aside, I had one as a rental (of course!) a couple months ago, and I was frankly very impressed. Especially with the hybrid powertrain (which I can't understand why it's not available in North America?!) I can see why this is popular. Price and economy. The hybrid takes the 1.5T but uses it as a generator only, powering the wheels only electrically. That means that its actually slightly less efficient pure highway, while adding quite a bit to the MSRP. It does have an EV like feel to it though.

Your 2021 is a different engine than the 2022 to current. You have a regular "normally aspirated" 4 cylinder, what they are talking about in this video is the VC turbo 3-cylinder. I've had the 22 with VC engine for over 2 years and the engine has been perfect, doesn't burn a drop of oil. No one knows what the future holds for this VC engine at say, 100K miles.

My spouse is leasing one of these currently. It’s super comfortable and for just general driving around, it’s great…peppy off the line and the driving dynamics are not horrible (for a cvt). Reason we got it?….the price. Compared to a CRV or Mazda, there’s so much value here in terms of cost-vs-options and the build quality seems good. There’s really no wonder why they sell so many of these.

The thing with the CVT in a Nissan is that you change that transmission fluid at least every 30 to maximum 60k miles. Nissan never tells you not to change it. The manuals only say to inspect but the mechanics will tell you to change it out. I've had 4 Nissans since 2011 and have ran up the odometer as much as 167k on a Maxima and 112k on an Altima and have had zero transmission issues. I think most(not all) of the people that get those issues are ones that are lazy and take the car for granted and don't do anything and wonder why their car breaks down.

Well my wife had a 2011 Rogue. I had the CVT oil changed at 15k miles and the transmission crapped the bed at 30k miles. Got it replaced under warranty. After around 12k miles, the replacement started making pretty loud noises and had to get it replaced under warranty again. She drove it for a while but we decided that the stress of not knowing if it would die on us again was not worth it and sold it. She got a Toyota and zero issues after many years and miles.

Had one of these for a rental on a family trip a few months ago. I was shocked at how much I liked it. The interior did not feel like a penalty box at all, it was well equipped, the panoramic sunroof made the cabin feel airy, and while the three cylinder turbo was pretty gutless up top, it had pretty good punch down low. Other than some infuriating infotainment stuff (artist alerts that turn the screen on even though I turned it off during night driving), I can say I really enjoyed my time with it. Would I buy one personally? Absolutely not! But overall, it's impressive for what it is.

I don't feel it has good punch down low either, but midrange is where its at. I got the CR-V hybrid instead of the Rogue this year. I was happy with my 2015 Altima, but why Nissan didn't make the Rogue into a hybrid and instead focused on putting in a smaller more tech-driven engine is beyond me. The vehicle SEEMS nice, but is woefully lacking in terms of mpg and reliability relative to the Honda. I did the math as well, and even though the Honda is higher upfront cost, the savings at the pump and better reliability and resale value more than make up for it in just a few years.

They make hybrids and nobody buys them, they had a rogue hybrid from 2016-2019 and stopped due to low take rate and had the best mpg at the time. They done it on several Nissan's and Infiniti's and all got discontinued since they had a low take rate. In reality 30-40 mpg highway is really good and very affordable for most people on just the standard gas cars, plus it takes a long time to get break even usually. But for a lot of people it's about trying to make a difference, for a company it's wasting money if they aren't getting it back. Toyota dominates this field, hardly anyone buys a Ford Escape Hybrid now when they were very popular back in 2004-2012 since nobody made a hybrid compact suv. It's all about marketing and gaining the trust of the public since most people know Toyota and Honda are good cars, 9 out 10 times.

As to comparisons you left out one sensible product, the Subaru Forester. It may not be as powerful as some SUVs but it has better outward visibility, decent fuel economy, a comfortable ride, lower center of gravity with the boxer engine, and an all wheel drive system that works full time on all wheels rather than only react to slipping wheels. And, after a two different Nissan cars with horrendous reliability, I shudder at owning another Nissan.

But the Forester has a JATCO CVT, right? Same crappy CVT as Nissan’s. At least Subaru used that transmission for a long time. Please someone correct me if they’ve switched recently. @@OldRustySteele Not correct. Subaru has never had a JATCO CVT but uses CVTs of its in-house design. Subaru has been using CVTs since 1989 with its Justy model. @@ronkemperful Ron, thanks for correcting me. To Faheem & Ron, here’s what I’ve found: 1) Aisin has never supplied CVT’s to Subaru. (Generally Aisin supplies Toyota). 2) Subaru has predominantly built their own CVT’s, and definitely have for the last several years. 3) References are sketchy on whether Subaru ever got CVT’s from JATCO in the early 2005-2015 timeframe. Some claim yes, but I can’t really tell if those are corroborated. 4) My friend with the cratered Forester CVT said that the dealer said it was a JATCO. But I think a lot of dealers and their mechanics are sometimes guilty of ignorance. Anyway, it looks certain that Subaru has built their own CVT’s for a while now. Also, they seem to have become more reliable since the 2015-ish timeframe. On a semi-related note: I owned a 2013 Maxima for 11 years before recently selling it. Never had a problem with its JATCO CVT, but I was diligent and changed fluid at 40K miles and 75K miles. It had 76K miles when I sold it. I changed the fluid just before selling it, because I sold it to a coworker and wanted to ensure it was in top shape. Cheers, Old Rusty

I really appreciate the take on this car being really goddamn important for a family that doesn’t have money. It’s was an agonizing choice when I bought a new car in 2022. I picked a Crosstrek because of Consumer Reports review but I know long term reliability wont be the same as my 1995 Impreza Wagon which I drove for 22 years. Direct injection and CVT are concerning not to mention all the wildly complex computer systems. So I installed an oil/air separator and I’ll be buying an expensive Scan tool which I’ll use when I change the CVT fluid every 36k (even though Subaru of America says you don’t need to change their magical lifetime fluid) Rich people don’t care, they are driving $80k electric cars which are disposable as far as they are concerned. Charging on trips is not an issue for them because they fly to further destinations, nobody talks about this. Regular people…..you know , the poors….we can’t afford to jump on an airplane for every 500mile trip. Remember we have families so it’s not one ticket it’s four or five….

This seems like a good vehicle to lease as it is top of class as long as nothing goes wrong with it. If it has issues, just drop it off after the lease is up and be done with it, but if you've had no issues after the lease is up you have the option to buy it. Buying it new is a bit of a gamble.

I’ve said it many times, vehicles in this class first and foremost need to tolerate neglect because you better believe buyers at this price point are going to be clueless about what is needed and tell the dealer to pound sand when the $300 CVT service is recommended. Add in Nissan’s tendency to cater to sub-prime buyers and cars like the Rogue are set up to have a bad reputation when really they can probably be reliable if maintained.

I wish Nissan could compete in that regard, as it would make shopping for new vehicles a lot more interesting. As someone who prioritizes dependability over anything else I really only shop 2 brands. and Nissan used to be there as one of those brands.

Switched a family member from a '17 Rav4, to a used '22 Rogue, and have been pretty happy with it so far. I was pretty weary of the brand because of it's reputation, but this thing was like under $25k before a $15k trade in, it was hard to beat. Was also looking at other used Rav4's but options in the price range were outdated tech (no GPS, no car play/android auto, little to no safety features) it really felt like a side grade going to a newer Rav4, on top of their higher asking price. Will keep an eye out for any issues, so far no problems, and doing oil changes earlier than recommended at 5k miles instead of 7.5k

Consumer Reports rates it better than Rogue for sure, but it lacks horsepower. I was in the market this year for a compact SUV and it made my short list. For me though, the fact that the Outlander is literally the only good vehicle Mitsubishi sells in the US made me not really overly consider it. I went with the CR-V hybrid, and did the math. While the Outlander is a bit less expensive upfront, the cost at the pump, the resale value, and the reliability just are not on par with the Honda, and I'd much rather have a strong network of dealerships.

Coming from a wholesale reconditioning background, Nissan can get pretty dicey (no manufacturer is immune of course). One of our biggest shocks is in the Nissan Kicks, where a plain non-LED headlight was still well over $500 to replace, maybe even $700 (it's been nearly a year since that vehicle, and we no longer buy them). That headlight light shouldn't be more than $200 new from the dealer, as it's really no more advanced than an '07 Versa in regards to tech. Now again, nobody is immune. The current Silverado and Sierra non-LED tail-lights can again soar well over the $500 mark, and not be something special. For perspective, a Ford F250 Tremor with LED's and cross-traffic radar sensors would be around $1,300 or so. Meanwhile, some manufacturers are surprising us, like the Tundra. We had a Platinum with the integrated button in the driver tail-light for opening the tailgate... I don't even think it was $250, and again it's the fanciest LED tail-light they have. But imagine the crap-shoot as a modern consumer bumping into the shopping cart corral (how, with all the sensors and cameras is beyond me), then having to shell out $1,200 not including paint. It makes being a wholesale dealer a hell of a lot tighter when the buyers don't consider what a little bump can end up costing.
