I intend on buying a diesel gladiator for my wife next year. I have a few reasons for this. The first is the range, we overland and when your getting to and from some places the range of your vehicle is extremely important. The second reason is that I run a h1 hummer for off roading and overlanding. Before anyone talks about the range on a h1 mine has been heavily modified and can pull down nearly 30mpg. Anyway we want a diesel so that we can carry the same fuel, this adds redundancy to our additional fuel carrying capabilities. The third reason is bigger tires. When going to bigger tires you need the additional torque to efficiently turn the tires over. I will be installing Dana 60s and running 40” tires with the same bolt pattern as my h1. Again because it provides redundancy between the two trucks. In all I will pay the extra money to have a truck that is very capable and compliments my current truck. From my perspective there is NO other truck that has the potential or capability to run with my h1 with out spending FAR more money. G wagon squared anyone? While it may not be right for some, it’s perfect for my wants and usage.

I don't think an average buyer, someone who is buying it just for commuting would go for the Diesel at that price point. But the jeep community its huge and people who use their jeeps for actual off roading and overloading whatever exploring they want will want to have a diesel with more power. Once you lift a jeep and put 37" tires and all the accessories and also even if you regear the differentials you will want more power. I mean there is a lot of engine swaps out there but they are expensive, more than what you would pay at the dealer unless you have the time and knowledge to do it yourself. Its a great option to be able to get more power, better gas milage and the reliability of OEM parts that are covered by warranty. Great review guys.

In some situations, the mileage can be very useful. Like, for example, the area around Middlegate and Gabbs, Nevada. I mentioned those two because they do have fuel, although not always. But if you go to explore some old mines, you may be away from gas for days. The typical answer is to carry a couple of jerry cans, but that brings its own issues with the smell, safety, and just convenience. Personally, I hate lifting the cans and I tend to pour gas upon myself when I syphon it.

I'd be more inclined to buy the diesel version if it was paired with a manual transmission. For me, a lot of the Wrangler's character is lost by having an automatic transmission (regardless of the engine type). I want the diesel for its low end torque off road, and its increased fuel economy (to make it more livable when I'm not offroad). I tend to keep vehicles for the long run (I kept my '94 Cherokee XJ for 20 years/443k miles when I deadlined it due to rust), so yeah - the $6k premium really blows...but it would eventually pay itself off in fuel savings over the V6. Here is my personal opinion: after driving the 2.0 turbo version I found it very powerful responsive and fun, it is not as economical like people think though... the manual calls for the highest octane gasoline fuel for the 2.0 vs the V6 which you can fuel it with the lowest octane no problem... Also, correct me if I'm wrong but a 4 Cyl Turbo is not going to last so long as the regular atmospheric 3.6 V6 which in my opinion is more reliable and simple to maintain, in conclusion I think that whoever pays the premium for the Diesel version is just for gas mileage and rock crawling torque.

The conundrum for me is that one of the usual benefits of a diesel, (aside from the additional torque and better mileage) is that they tend to outlast gasoline engines by a fairly wide margin. 250,000 miles is something that you would easily expect from a well maintained diesel, if not more. This brings me to the question of; "Who is going to put that many highway miles on a rolling cinder block like the Wrangler?" It might be a lot of things, and it might be more comfortable than previous editions, but a highway cruiser it is not. Especially with the off road tires you would use to do what it does best. I guess my point is that longevity in terms of miles will never factor into the equation, because it would be hard to rack up 250,000 of them crawling over rocks, and through ditches.

After 5500 miles on a diesel JLUR, I am still very happy with my choice. With 37s and a 3.5" lift, I'm still running 21.5mpg across Colorado with stock gearing. The transmission handled off-roading in 4L far better than the V6, especially in high RPM downhill situations.

If I were to get another Wrangler someday, I'd get a 2-door, soft-top and automatic - its a perfect vehicle for where I live - a southern state with mild weather and close to the beach. I used to own a 2013 Unlimited soft top with a 6-speed manual and it was a great vehicle, lots of fun with the top down and I never had any problems with it at all. I only traded because my job involves some long stints driving to another state and on the highway it was a pig to drive, just no acceleration at all in 6th gear - and I'm a die-hard manual person. I love the improvements of the JK over the JL but the price is shocking. To get a nicely equipped one is easily over $40K. My 2013 stickered at $32K and it wasn't a stripped down model, it was a mid-level Freedom Edition.

Sports with the simple V6 can be had around $30k. Gets 23mpg highway, so only about $300/year more in fuel cost. You can still option a Dana 44 rear with LSD, prewired aux switches, etc. If you don't mind (or prefer) cloth and tactile buttons and switches for everything vs Big Infotainment, its really the best version no one ever talks about.

I have been to more than a few Jeep dealers in the last few years with the run up to the JL release and the JT release. The number of jeeps available with manual transmissions is inconsequential. The number of used jeeps with manual transmissions is a small fraction. Factoring in the cost of the automatic with the diesel is irrelevant when a vast majority of jeeps sold are automatics. I have been to large dealers that don’t have a manual trans wrangler on the lot more than once and have been told I’d have to order one. Great video by the way.

As you say, the reason to drive a diesel is torque at low rpm and fuel efficiency. That is the contrary of a sports car. But those people are there. I don't know about this engine, but with good maintenance, diesel engines will generally have a 30 % longer life span on average than a traditional engine.

I priced out my dream diesel rubicon up here in canada. It came out to $80,221 with taxes... For that same money I could buy a ram 1500 Limited or even a really nice 2500. I want the Jeep because I grew up with my dad having Jeeps. The freedom you feel having all the doors and top off is worth every penny. If they sold the diesel in a 2 door i would already own it haha

I got a new jeep as a rental for a week with the 2.0 Turbo. The engine was very impressive in my opinion. The handling on the other hand was horrible. I hit a bump in the road in the middle of a turn at 50mph, and I thought i was a goner!

Kind of funny! When this first came out the reviewers were saying what a great ride it was. I guess compared to earlier version, that may be true. However, when the Gladiator came out with the extra length, all of them say they "this is the way the Wrangler should have handled".

You asked for those who bought a Wrangler Diesel to post and say why you bought it, so I'll tell you why I ordered mine. Power & longevity. Unfortunately, I still don't have my diesel as FCA is dragging their feet on the build process, even though it was ordered on 10/8/2019. My options were, keep my 2013 JKU Rubicon and LS swap it for the power I wanted, or buy a stock Diesel Rubicon with the features the JL has and have a more comfortable and better performing Jeep. Also, I only had my 2013 for 18 months and had accumulated 50k miles in that time, ending up with 130k miles before I sold it. With that many miles being put on my Jeep every year, I decided to go with the diesel, as in my experience, they just don't wear out as fast. So I sold the JKU Rubicon in July of 2018 while I had some equity in it, and started waiting.

I dunno? The Cummins, Powerstroke and Duramax are all tried and proven diesels, and they still have their issues. He has an excellent point about suspension issues. The weight and torque of a diesel prematurely wear some components. Great review.

I have to admit, when I heard about the diesel option coming, I thought it would be the coolest thing ever to have in the Gladiator. I envision a baby army truck. The extra grunt from that diesel torque may not boost ultimate towing capacity but it will make towing anything much more enjoyable. Anybody I know that goes from gas to diesel when towing always says, "Yeah now i almost forget I have a trailer back there". Also, I agree with you guys about the character of the engine matching the character of the Jeep. Now, all they need is to offer at least one Hemi V8 engine option. I am not an owner now but one day I'll probably give a Wrangler or Gladiator a try :)

The increase in cost for the diesel certainly cancels out any gains in fuel economy. The only reason to spring for the Ecodiesel over the gas engine would be for the torque. All Wranglers are overpriced, IMO, but people will always buy them.

If FCA can pull this off with long term reliability I would probably consider one a few years down the road on the used market. I wanted to see a diesel jeep, and this is how it arrived. A 4 door. Not really what I was expecting. I wanted to see the return of a jeep styled pickup, and it came to us in a 4 door with a small bed. Ugh. at is the deal with modern vehicles.... I try to find the good but it is so hard. I don't expect much but it seems like so many are so far from any sort of expectation that I keep going back and looking at older vehicles because they seem so much more functional. Even the CVT... On paper what you can do is awesome, but it came to us in the Sentra and other econoboxes.

I have purchased new Wrangler Unlimited's and was considering a diesel but the price and unproven technology is such that I may keep my 2016 for a few more years. It has many, many hours of operation but only 35k miles. I liked the 2005, I-6, 6 speed manual more than any of my other Jeeps but it only had two doors.

I completely agree with Savagegeese on this one. The Turbo was 4 was nice surprise when i got one from the rental lot. This car was not worth the money in the winter (which is when i got this as a rental. It was loud, horrible handling, blown around by wind, gets bad reliability reviews etc. BUT, if it were the summer, and I took the roof and doors off and cruised Colorado feeling the wind and sun, this would have provided an experience that nothing else would. To me, its not worth the money they are asking for, but to a lot of people it is, and i can't agree that.

The $6k surcharge for the eco diesel includes the 8-speed auto transmission. Compared to a JL with a gas engine that already has the $2k option 8-speed auto transmission, the diesel is a $4k option. It's really only a $6k option over a manual transmission JL.

Y'all are forgetting 2 things that come with the diesel. #1 Range. For those who use these vehicles for what they are built for, back country wheeling and exploring, the diesel offers more range without carrying extra fuel. That 30% more fuel economy equates to 30% more range in the back country. That extra 5 gallon fuel container that overlanders carry will take you ~30 more miles than with a gas engine, which is huge. #2 No regearing needed when lifting the vehicle and adding bigger tires. The amount of torque, combined with the 8 speed auto gearing means that you will not need to re-gear not just 1 axle, but 2 axles in that situation. To regear both axles you are looking at more than half the cost of that diesel upgrade, and a serious hit on fuel economy. The diesel will probably struggle less, and the fuel economy will still beat the gas engine when you add massibe 37 inch tires after that 3.5 inch lift. (edit: so for a regear cost, you are looking at $1500-$2000 for a reputable shop to do it)
