God I miss Turbowski. Can imagine him eyeing this monstrosity with his usual sarcastic silence. He would diss on the engine - "Oh, this is a 6 cylinder? I counted 4". Then Savagegeese would say "this is their tried and true direct and port injec-" and Turbowski would give a curt nod of acknowledgement. He would then take off that engine cover like his dog pooped in the park and he has to scoop it up in a bag. Both Mr. Goose and Turbowski would look at the underbody and make fun of the dysfunctional, ridiculous grill. A moment of mutual understanding and respect. Mr. Goose is reminded why he is friends with Turbowski in the first place. He smiles at Turbowski. Turbowski ignores Mr. Goose's smile. Most sedan buyers are too frightened to buy a sports sedan with a maintenance schedule that will most likely swallow an IRA. These buyers need the price under 50k and it hast to be be reliable for the next 10 years. The Avalon fits the bill! The TRD package just makes it "Merica" compliant for the tailgate crowd. This all has to do with Toyota's "no more boring cars" deceleration from late 2018/early 2019. The brand has been viewed as reliable but otherwise boring and generic. Their current CEO wants to change that, which is why we got the TRD camry and avalon, TRD offroad sequoia, that special edition overlandish land cruiser, and rav4 adventure. Also for 2021 they have the "nightshade" line coming out which is a blackout package for pretty much the entire lineup. So whether you like the new products and trims or not, I give major props to them for trying to spice things up and hopefully with a bit more time and refinement, they can get these more fun oriented models just right.

I just picked up a 2020 Avalon TRD. I agree with everything in this video. Every pro and con. The transmission is easily the weakest link. The 3.5 V6 has enough power (301HP) for a sedan of this weight, but the dog slow transmission is always hunting for gears and downshifting at strange times, shortly followed by upshifting again. Also, yep, the JBL system sounds terrible. Almost unacceptable. My wife has a 19 Passat Wolfsburg with the standard sound system, and it blows this JBL out of the water in clarity, dynamic response, and overall balance. I had a B&O system in my last car (Audi) and I understand you can't fairly compare the two. But this JBL is embarrassingly bad.

I agree that the Avalon is a superb vehicle... but the TRD package is laughable, and, as you mentioned, obviously the TRD is catering to a younger audience. In my opinion, most mature adults will bypass the TRD in favor of a decked-out Avalon Touring. Once again, another great review... Thanks

Nissan Maxima is good also. Buy in June, July, August, get the last one on the lot. Or try Hertz Rent 2 Buy, one year old, 10K miles or less miles. Worth looking at to compare to Autotrader. Beware, a lot of cars at the dealer are purchased from rental companies. Which hide accidents and repairs, happened to me, so inspect the car for new panels. See if the edges of one panel are sharp vs a new car who's edges are smooth. That's how the mechanic told me my hertz 2 year old Mercedes was in an accident, new front right quarter panel. Beware.

You said the TRD doesn't add anything to the car? That's because you're driving in a straight line. The handling is very different compared to the regular models. It's not trying to be a SPORTY Car it's a luxury Car with some performance qualities. That's what the buyers for this car are looking for. The first Gen that came out was a 3.0 v6 200HP it was really well for its time compared with mercedes/ bmws and audis. A 95 bmw 525 is a 2.5 6 cyl. 189hp. It's going back to its roots which i'm glad they're finally doing.
